I write to say Divvy compares favorably to similar services in major cities. I was in Chicago for two days on business. I rented a bicycle three times. I used the Lyft app. In every instance, there were multiple bikes, including with e-assist, at the nearest station; the first one I pulled out worked fine; and they appeared clean and kept up very nicely. My experience extends from New York City to Washington, D.C. to San Francisco (and scooters in Los Angeles). I have reported here, as a regular user, that I'd estimate many docks are empty, at least of the models with e-assist; a third of the bikes are in disrepair; and minor issues such as sticky handlebars or trash left in the front bin are common. I continue to use this service because it is effective. I'm also mindful the price point likely allows for not that much profit, the users in the system (like me) are treating these objects without reverence (as you would your own fancy e-bike), and they sit outside exposed to the elements. Thus, if you take everything into account, what the company must be calculating is the minimum level of functionality to retain subscribers and lure casual users, consistent with a modicum of profit. That is the reality. So I continue to ride. But I felt I should post to say of the major metropolitan areas I have named, I'd rate Divvy in Chicago as the best, based on three uses. read more

Original Divvy member who stopped membership during COVID. Just renewed and am amazed at how horrible it is now. It took me 20 minutes to locate a bike the loop and then nearly every station on the north side was full. Had to park 2 stations away from my house. How hard is it to balance the system? Very misleading pricing. I purchased the day pass but wasn't aware that it didn't apply to e-bikes at all, I wound up getting charge for the day pass fee plus the normal per minute charge for the ebike, the day pass did absolutely nothing. Initial trying to use these things were confusing, I did my bike rentals from the app which showed random bikes in town as well as the hub stations. After not being successful getting random bike that I though was available I just got each bike from the hubs in the area. Divvy is part of Lyft so if you already have a Lyft account when you download the Divvy app it automatically connects you. The price for an e-bike was 18 cents per minute and a regular bike you get the first 45 minutes free (I think if you have the pink Lyft membership perks) then any additional minute after that is 18 cent. The docking stations are a bike of a pain in the ass to get the bikes back in and docked, but as long as you make sure it connects and locks you should have any issue getting over charged. I preferred the regular bike over the ebike because the e-bike sound like they're going to crumble anytime you go over a dip in the road, the regular bike make for a more comfortable ride through the city. read more

Divvy's bike rental policies are designed to be misleading. My husband and I took two bikes and after scanning, we were prompted to purchase a day pass. Unlimited three hour rides for standards bikes...perfect! We ride the lakefront and enjoy the beautiful spring day up until we were done with our ride. Two charges to us each...one for the day pass of $22 and a second charge of $65?! Turns out we rented e-bikes which hold a significantly higher charge than the standard bikes that the day pass is for. My issue? No clear denotation that you're riding an e-bike. In hindsight they look different but if you've never ride them before, you would have no clue. Also, don't advertise a day pass for $20 to someone scanning an E-BIKE when there's zero deal associated with it. The price is the same. All you get is a "free bike unlock" which totals $1. You're much better off with no day pass and riding the e-bike itself for $65 than spending nearly $90 for a e-bike + day pass that you get no benefit from. DO BETTER read more

Pricing is deceptive. The concept of using the electric bike is great. The process involved with renting the bike is fairly easy. In the end you get overcharged with fees and extra cost per minute. Recommend using public transportation or walking. read more

Absolutely garbage I paid the fee they withdrew a 50 dollar a piece temporary hold on two bikes for me and my child to be able to go where we needed they provided the code for the two bikes so they could be unlocked and up entering that code none of the bikes e-bike classic bike or scooters to unlock and upon calling the customer service line got absolutely zero help in fixing the situation as well while on the phone watching someone else be able to unlock a bike with no problems. read more

I was unable to dock my bike (none were available and the single one was broken). So they want to charge me $112 for a 13 minute Ride. Then i went to find the bike, and THEY LOCKED MY ACCOUNT and threatened to charge me a lost bike fee. This is after i contacted their help IMMEDIATELY. I love Divvy!! I can't speak to how great it is to have a bike sharing program with lots of easily accessible docks throughout the city. When I was a student at University of Chicago, we got $15 off the annual membership using our school's discount code and it was such a steal! The membership paid for itself within a couple months! The addition of e-bikes was nice as well since it allowed for easier travel to places that might not have a bike dock within a couple blocks. It's very easy to take an hour or more casual ride along the lakefront because of how frequent the bike docks are. You can easily get about a half hour ride in and then dock and redock your bike to reset the timer. It works great for day passes and annual membership. read more

We had a very bad experience trying to rent some bikes from Divvy on a day in Chicago and I wanted to warn people about this service. We tried to rent 4 bikes to ride along the lake for an hour or so. I'll spare you all the details, but the docks weren't working properly and we could only get 3 bikes unlocked after much effort, and the very buggy app charged me for an additional ride which never happened and which I could not cancel. I spent an hour on chat with their support (not sure if it was a human or bot) which was almost completely useless. I was told that the only way to end this non-existent ride was for the bike to get docked -- even though it had never left the dock! No solution was offered. The punch line is that after we gave up and left Illinois to go home, 9 hours later I got a notification that the "ride" had mysteriously ended. They claimed I had their bike for over 500 minutes and charged me over $100, for a bike which never got undocked in the first place. I emailed customer support, but after reading the other reviews here (oh, how I wish I'd read them ahead of time!) I'm not hopeful about getting a quick resolution. Fortunately my credit card company seems to be willing to work with me to fight these bogus charges. Be wary, don't trust Divvy! Horrible experience: I scanned a bike, the app said the closest available one to reserve was seven minutes away, I walked away but the app silently started running the meter on that bike, when I scanned another bike a few blocks away I was told I had a ride in progress, I raced back but the first bike was gone, and someone else rode it for more than an hour while I tried to get customer support to cancel the ride. Refund refused. I've logged out of my account (which Divvy will not let you delete), I've deleted the app, and I will dispute the charge. What a terrible company! One of the drivers picking up bikes on Sheriadan Road was blocking a lane and illegally parked. So what did I do? I called customer support (in India), who had no Idea where Sheridan Road is or where Loyola University is located in Chicago, nor where Lake Shore Drive is located. Next time, I will take a photo of the license plate and will call 911, and make a formal complaint with the CPD. This company is scummy. And I told him that. I was a loyal customer for 2 year out of desperation because it was the fastest way to get out of the city. however, divvy is a money-hungry company with no regard for loyal customers. There are NEVER enough places to park and instead of fixing this issue, DIVVY punishes its customers. Ive gotten punished with fines for parking RIGHT NEXT to the parking station although it was full. I also got a $250 fine for my bike being STOLEN. I filed a police report and everything but divvy said it was my fault because they weren't able to track the bike because it was non-electric. read more

I have had a horrible experience with DIVVY Bikes customer service regarding a rental that went badly on the day of the Chicago Marathon. The bike I had rented was taken, perhaps by accident, by a person who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. That person left A different Divvy bike in the place where a bike I had rented was parked. I rode the remaining bike to a docking station thinking it was the bike I had rented. I was able to secure that bike in the dock but I could not complete my return on my phone. It was at that point when I realized that I had the wrong bike. I filed a report with the Chicago PD and attempted to respectfully resolve the issue with a customer service rep named Yule. I was charged $110 for an extended rental and another $250 for a non-return fee. My issue lies in the fact that customer service is no longer responding to my emails and will not take my calls. They continue their downward spiral under Lyft. The e-bikes take up the majority of the slots, while 20 classics are often chained together and unusable at the Franklin and Monroe location. Checked out a Divvy classic this morning for a 4-block ride, went to 5 different locations before I could find a slot. And of course, not a Divvy van in sight. Maybe they're just on strike....every....single....day. I have no good alternative, don't want to bring my own bike downtown every day. Divvy is like Zipcar but for bikes. It's great for short trips but not without time limitations and overage fees, although there's a workaround for that but takes some planning on your part. Recently I had to pick up a specialty item from a store. To get there my options were to walk or take public transit. I opted to walk, however, I quickly changed my mind when I saw someone riding a Divvy bike. It wasn't my first time seeing a Divvy bike in motion but suddenly I became motivated to give it a try. It took me about 20 minutes to get to my destination by Divvy which would've taken over an hour by foot. And there was light traffic on the road too so I'm sure less cars on the street condensed my biking time. With Divvy's annual membership members get unlimited rides but only 45 minutes at a time. You incur overage fees if you go over the time. To avoid overage fees you can extend the time for a fee. Or to avoid fees you can find a Divvy bike station before your time's up, dock the bike and start over again for another 45 minutes. Using the app is handy because it keeps track of your rental time. Fortunately I had time on my hands and discovered quite a few Divvy stations along my route so I was able to dock and undock. For longer rides you can opt for the $15 day pass which includes three hour trips before docking. A better cost option is to try the annual membership for $49.50. This rate ends May 31, 2020. It turns out Divvy partnered with the City of Chicago to discount Divvy's annual membership in half, making it more advantageous. The sign up on the web site is relatively easy or you can download the app. When you arrive to the Divvy station to rent a bike all you have to do is open your app, click the button that says Scan QR then hover over the QR code which is located near the center of the bike's handlebars; your phone will take a picture. Soon after the dock unlocks the bike. Gently pull the bike out of the dock towards you. Once you do that your off and on your way. For quick trips, Divvy is a winner and was an enjoyable trip despite the time limitations. read more

When you have difficulty docking your bike, they basically asked you to wait and then never reply to you; when you are charged some unreasonable money, they said they will reach out to you but never. Great experience, totally recommend it to explore Chicago. When we were in the hotel, we downloaded the app on our phones and bought the 24 hour pass for $15. I think it's worth it! And we were ready to undock bikes once we were at the biking station. During our stay, the bikes were pretty popular. Only about 4 bikes were available on the docks we went to. And sometimes you would encounter issues with bikes undocking the station, so pretty much it's useless. But the bikes stations were not very far apart, you can see how many bikes available on the app, we walked to the next stations where bikes were available. We biked along the lakefront biking trail. We docked the bikes once we got to attractions, and undocked the bikes with the app when we were ready to go to the next attractions. Super convenient! The biking trail was great! I was very happy biking along the trail and also feel very safe! So glad there's a biking trail!! It rained a little bit during our bike ride, we stayed in the shade for a little while and then biked to the famous Lou Malnatis. Bring a rain/waterproof/wind jacket with you. I have been with Divvy since it first showed up. Since then, it has been in a steady decline and the customer service has been beyond atrocious. Last week, for no apparent reason, I haven't been able to get a bike or scooter. Each time I get a message that "you cannot take a ride at this time." The phone representatives are useless. They have put me on hold only to come back and say that the matter needs to be escalated. They are non-responsive to emails or inquiries at the website. I gave up my personal bike because I thought Divvy was a great alternative. Now that it has a virtual monopoly in Chicago, it seems not to care one bit about its customers. read more

Rented an electric divvy bike today. When I went to scan the barcode on the bike before renting it, a message popped up and asked if I wanted the day pass which gets you u limited rides. I clicked yes and paid $20 for the day pass because I was planning to take two separate rides in one day and it would be cheaper to have a pass. Turns out it only covers regular bikes, not electric bikes so I ended paying the initial $20 fee plus a separate charge for each ride which came out to roughly $40!!! (For a total riding time of 20 min). I think it's very misleading that the message popped up to get the day pass when I scanned the electric bike even though it doesn't necessarily apply to electric ones. Hopefully I will get my money back... I won't be a returning customer. read more

This was my first experience with Divvy and itll be my last. the experience was unacceptable to say the least. I purchased an all day for $20. I didn't keep the for more than an hour. My total was $70. I called my bank and noticed I had four different transactions for four different amounts $70. Absolutely ridiculous!!!! when I called Customer Service they agreed to return my money within 7 to 10 business days or something like that in 2025 really. The lady tried to explain to me that yes there is a $20 charge for an all day pay but we can charge you $.42 a minute. It bad is not even in the contract agreement. Divvy bikes are one of my favorite forms of transportation throughout the city. The best part? A year-long membership is only $99! Sure-- the bikes are clunky, and you can sometimes get a dud, but the pros definitely out weigh the cons in my opinion. With over 600 stands scattered throughout the city, you can simply hop on a bike and park it near your destination. It's all done through the app, which makes it easy to grab a bike, check your rental time, and see where nearby stands are. You can also report any faulty bikes through it! Last summer, I divvy'd to work (Wrigleyville down to Michigan/Monroe) about twice a week. It was such a treat and a great way to start my day. With the warm weather approaching, I'm looking forward to hopping on a divvy again here soon! read more

When I decided to try to rent a Divvy bike in Chicago, I didn't know how much it would cost, but it didn't occur to me it would cost $240 for one ride. I could buy a much better bike for the cost of one ride. When I rented the bike I was acting quickly on my phone and I didn't realize until later that I was billed $131 for an annual membership. I cancelled as soon as I could, and only used the annual membership for one ride. I was also charged $109 for the bike rental. I was having a mental health crisis and I was too exhausted to return it to the turnstile that day, so I left it in my apt overnight. When I wrote to Lyft they ignored my request for a refund. I guess I was supposed to read the whole lengthy contract of fine print to see there is over $100 charged for a lost bike gone for over 24 hours that isn't lost. I thought the membership covers the cost of the bike rental. They charged me much more than the hourly rate of a rental. They should inform us of this in their ads. The bikes are poorly made, too tall, built for 6 ft men, even if you lower the seat it will destroy the balls of a shorter man, and be dangerous to ride, you could fall over or crash, which I did. I would like to assist Lyft in informing customers of the details of the Divvy contract that with one tap on your phone you could be charged hundreds of dollars and they have strict no refund policy. read more

There is a specific way that divvy asked you to park their bikes. They will charge you a $25 parking fine regardless if you park it correctly or not. First of all, I should've just walked. (Which I after 15 minutes ended up doing) all of the bikes had no charge , but that's not even the worst part . Right when I arrived , I used the machine in the midst of the bikes. I payed $14 , which they took out right away. It gave me 5 minutes to obtain a bike. I was scanning them all , while luckily there was one that didn't have flat tires and that was charged. It took me more than 5 minutes to obtain my bike , so then it charged me additionally for another one. Ps I'm not even halfway through the hardships I've faced tonigjt . When I returned my bike after approximately 8 minutes I noticed another charge on my card YET AGAIN for $114.11 I didn't even make it to my destination because my bike handle buckled and locked and it threw me into the street. Turns out for the scooter the day pass gives you unlimited "UNlOCKs" which just eliminates the 1.00 unlock fee each time you ride and you still pay +-45 cents per minute. I mean that's pretty crappy. I think Divvy is convenient-as there appears to be bicycles available for rent throughout various parts of the city. It would be helpful if MORE bicycles were available near the bike path areas of Lake Michigan...as those seem to be next to empty most of the time. It is nice to know that if you do not feel like riding your own bike or want to get somewhere and not worry about locking up your bike or wish to take the Bus, Train or Taxi/Uber/Lyft, etc. on a return trip that it IS possible. I think they should design and have access to bicycle rentals for people who only have the use of one arm for example. The braking system is only set up for fully functional two handed individuals. Not everyone has access to both limbs ALL of the time (think broken arm, fractured collar bone, etc) or even at all (think stroke, polio survivors, paralysis, etc). read more

Divvy has overtaken Xfinity as the worst customer service in Chicago. I'm a paid member, which costs over $100/yr, and I went 2 full months without being able to rent a single bike, because the rental process wouldn't allow it. Other people were renting the same bikes I was just told were "out of service" or "unavailable", right in front of me. I have called and had it out with no less than 10 Divvy customer service employees, with their almost indecipherable accents, and their scripted responses that are absolute BS. "I understand, that must be frustrating, we'll escalate this to a supervisor, and they'll get back to you within 2 days." Yeah, my backside.
