I have visited this place several times over the years, and one of the things I love is unlike most bike shops, you can get your tune up while you wait. That isn't always convenient, but it is a nice option to have. I really appreciate being able to watch the mechanic work since they do the work outside. If there is going to be a wait, the lakefront is a short walk and an enjoyable way to kill time. A few weeks ago I had the day off to bike around the lakefront. My bike was squeaking and rattling and needing a little care and saw there was no line there. The mechanic took a look, roughed up and adjusted my brake pads, and cleaned the wheel and inflated it. When I ask what I owed him, he didn't charge me anything. Just a straight up act of kindness on his part. I hope that good karma he put out comes back to him and this place. read more

Monday June 23rd, 11 am: I'm on the LF bike path, near 95 degrees. I hear my bike tire rubbing, I see its about to pop. I make it to Lakeshore bike on the path near Waveland ave. Couldn't be better timing. I explain and show my bike tire. he says he has a replacement tire, I wait about 25 minutes and he starts working on my bike. 10 minutes later says the tire wont fit, he cant do it, sorry. Huh?, please put my original tire back on and ill go to Kozy on the other side of lake shore Dr. Begrudgingly agrees to put my tire back on. I try and petal, the bike doesn't work. He says there is a problem with back axle. I said please just put it back as it was when I arrived, ill go to Kozy. He said I'm not listening. "if you can just make it petal so I can get to Kozy." repeats I'm not listening. Then tells me he has to charge $10 for his time. All true. I walked to Kozy on Halsted, had my bike working in 20 minutes. WARNING: run from this place, he is a bicycle butcher. He doesn't know what he's doing. BE CAREFUL here. read more

We had an absolutely beautiful day riding along the lake shore. This is my favorite thing to do when visiting Chicago. Since we didn't have bikes with us this time, renting at Lakeshore Bike was a perfect option. It's conveniently located next to a parking lot. Gerardo was a huge help getting us set up. The price is fair (he even gave us a discount, rounding down the extra time over the two hours we had the bikes). I can't recommend this service enough. Take the afternoon, ride down to Doane Observatory, have a picnic at the beach, and when you've returned the bikes at Lakeshore, stop by for an ice cream at 2 Wheel Tacos next door. read more

Lakeshore Bike is a lifesaver! I have been a customer of Lakeshore Bike since 2015. The staff along with the owner has always been consistently friendly to me from the moment I randomly stumbled upon their shop to rent a bike. Since my first purchase in 2015 I have always opted to purchase bike accessories and get a tune ups from Lakeshore Bike. I was completely blown away by the level of effort the shop put into maintaining social distancing guidelines. I was having issues with my bike after getting it out of storage and I sent a request for a quote to the shop along with other shops via Yelp. Lakeshore Bike messaged back messaged back within 5-10 minutes after my inquiry. I was able to get an appointment to get my bike picked up from my apartment within 24 hours of them responding to my inquiry. The pick up and delivery of my bike was very smooth. The shop also allows you to pay from their mobile card reader so no need to exchange dollar bills. Side note: I ended up hearing back from 1 more shop a few days later with a more expensive quote after my bike was getting worked on by Lakeshore Bike. read more

Lakeshore Bikes is my go-to spot for bike rentals in Chicago! I've happily rented road bikes from them for the past three years for the Chicago triathlon. I think one of my favorite things about this shop is when you rent a bike you don't need to bring your own pedals (if you have spds at home). Helmets are also included in the rental. If you're thinking of booking a bike for the triathlon I'd recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance since they tend to run out of the most popular road bike sizes pretty early on (which makes sense since the triathlon brings in about 10,000 athletes into the city!) read more

Very good experience overall. The brakes were really loud and could've been fixed better but there were no issues on the ride.

I contacted the shop before the weekend for what should be a quick fix. I confirmed the details about the situation over the phone. The communication and customer service were great. I checked out their Yelp page for reviews. Everything looked good. Also, there are health & safety measures listed on the Yelp page. Unfortunately that's where the positivity ended. I rushed over after work so that I could get to the shop while it was still open. When I arrived I noticed that the Covid-19 update on the Yelp page was not accurate at all. There were 2 staff members working and 2 customers. Nobody was wearing a mask. Also, social distancing was not enforced. These are health & safety measures provided by the business. What I witnessed in person was not the safe experience the website promised. Needless to say I left before my bike could be repaired. I sought out a business with safe practices during Covid-19. While Lakeshore Bike claims they offer that I did not witness any of it. For many people that forgo correct mask usage and safety measures during a pandemic (especially in this huge city with rising cases) my experience probably won't deter them. For others who are more concerned about a safe experience, for staff and customers, I hope my review steers their business elsewhere. read more

4 for tune up, 0 for customer service. Rude and unprofessional. Went in to get my bike tuned up for a race. I asked the lady if there were any problems with the bike, to which replied no. Right before I left the shop, I wanted the handle raised, so I asked the lady to lift it up for me. When she was tightening it, she and I both realized that one of the screws was not tightening. The bearded man with a hat came over to inspect the bike and said that the stem was damaged and that I would have to replace it unless I wanted to visit the dentist from the handle giving out. I asked why this was not addressed both during the tune up or when I asked if there were any problems. He raised his voice and exclaimed that there was no problems with the tune up because "he" did it. I explained that there was a problem with the tune up because it failed to recognize a faulty part during his safety inspection. Which makes me question if they checked the nuts and bolts during the safety inspection because neither the seat nor the handle bar looked adjusted before I was about to leave. The man continues to taunt me and denying any fault by saying things like, "So what do you really want? Do you want a free stem?", "This is a cheap bike, it's the bike's problem." Until that point I would've just left with a quick fix, but now I was upset at this man's rude behavior. I asked for a refund because the tune up overlooked a potential safety hazard and because they did not aware me of it. The man scoffed then spoke some words to the lady. She issued me the refund. Upon arriving home, I inspected the bike myself to realize that it wasn't the stem that was faulty, it was just the metal layer that connected the stem to the handle bar that was faulty. Not only did he misidentify the problem twice, but I would've had had to pay even more to buy a new stem from them. I do not recommend this place for a tune up if safety and customer service are your priorities. read more

Rude, unprofessional, unsecured location. Dealt with a mechanic who needs to be fired. By looking around at the all but two mechanics standing in the doorway and his photo on Yelp, he's not employed for his lack of professionalism or his attitude. And judging by the one star reviews, they don't really care much due to being overwhelmed by business due only to the location being right on the bike trail. Did not feel at all interested in leaving my bike with someone who walked away and spoke rudely to me. Music was blaring out of the stand as he walked past me and spoke to me with his back to me. When I told him I could not hear what he said, his response was, "Are you deaf?" That was the first audible thing he said hence, to me, my first impression. I told him he needed to speak to me with respect. Took a lot for me to not speak my mind. Early to late 30 something with a real attitude. He then lied and said something to get out of the rude comment. No apology but a sudden about face on having his full and complete attention. I rolled my bike past him and took my business elsewhere. Felt like I was dealing with a disgruntled customer service representative unhappy with his job. Didn't want to leave my bike with a person like that. read more

For the same Reid bike I had bought for $300 a mere year ago or so is now being sold for $800. Mind you, it's used. Reason is cited as 'corona' by the person working there. Then, they admitted the price is ridiculous, but didn't do anything about it. I assure you, you will find cheaper and better bikes elsewhere. These guys are low key trying to rip people off. Update: went there again, looked at the same bike I had before, and the guy started patronizing saying that it's too big for me, then the saddle is too high. All of this after I told them I've had the same bike for at least a year. They took my license and let me test it. When I returned they gave me the same price. I said it's too high, then the guy changed his mind suddenly and started claiming those bikes are only for renting. Avoid this place and these guys. No integrity and no business ethics. read more

This review is for bike rentals at Lake Shore Bike. It was Memorial Day weekend and we felt like renting bikes to ride the lake shore path. LSB was nearby so we asked if they had rental bikes available. Nothing was available right then but after a short wait two bikes came back in and we were able to take them out. The rental process is somewhat "casual" more like borrowing something from a neighbor rather than a rental as such. At the time I thought it was somewhat off-putting but later I appreciated how laid back the process is. I did not expect that we would be given as nice bikes as we got to rent- the one that I rode was a nearly new $900+ Specialized cross tour bike with disc brakes. The other was a cruiser style bike but with a lot of nice features and obviously in great condition other than needing a little air in the back tire. A tech helped us with the tire when it was pointed out. LSB also have helmets and locks available which we did not need since we brought our own. We paid a little more than it would have cost to get a DIVVY bike but felt that we got a lot more value for what we paid. I am so happy!! I knew I needed my bike tuned up but I wasnt excited about paying $75. I found a groupon for this place, $50 what a steal!! I had read some reviews on other nearby shops and it seemed that if you are not a bike expert some bike shop guys will treat you like you have no idea what is going on. Chuck tuned up my bike and he was great. I was able to get same day service! He also answered all my questions and made my bike look wonderful. I did see a comment about a dirty bike. Bought a groupon for a tune-up and it's a pretty flawless tune-up, with a year long warranty. My contentions are relatively trivial: -The store was kind of hard to find and get to if you haven't been there before and don't know the area (especially in the winter). -I supposedly needed a bunch of new parts that amounted to $90 (I probably did, but it was disappointing to discover). -I had an appointment for the the tune-up and was on a tight schedule, and still had to wait 10 minutes for anyone to show up, and then I was told it might take longer than the hour I was quoted, so I made the decision to come back later. Though they were very accommodating, it was still slightly annoying when you're on a kind of tight schedule. A redeeming factor is when I had a problem the next day with my left brake, I was able to immediately schedule a repair, and they instructed me and imparted knowledge in how to fix, maintain, and make repairs myself. This place is a little shop right along the biking/walking area on Lakeshore. The owner/manager/person in charge does not like to bargain on Saturdays and Sundays so don't even bother. They were able to fix something on my bike pretty quickly. I did have to go back though because it wasn't done right. I think they had some new staff there. This place has bikes for sale, rent, and gear for sale. They have this $5 basket so I picked up a couple of accessories. I am thankful this business is here! read more

They did a great job and the communication was amazing. They came and picked up and returned my bike at my home. Because I told them I was hoping to ride it later in the day, they were able to turn it around quickly to get my tune up finished. I needed a few things replaced too as my bike has sat out in the rain a number of times, but it was all a great price and I was incredibly please with how smooth my bike rode after the repairs and tune up. Disappointed. I used to ride the city bike by this place everyday for a couple years, and FINALLY decided to get my broken bike fixed. I woke up on a Saturday morning, grabbed my wallet and was excited to spend some $. Came up to this business the minute it open, and approached a guy working behind the booth. Rude! I told him that I'm not the expert biker and don't know what was really wrong with the bike, and he looked at me like I was some chump with 0 brains. Grabbed his tool, tighten up a bolt, and said "there you go, put some air in it". With out any direction, I found the air pump finally and put some air in my tire. Social Distancing Service was TOP NOTCH. As we are all getting used to a new normal, I was looking for a bike shop that was open and would allow me to drop off bikes for a tune-up. So, I used trusty Yelp to help me find 3 places near me and requested quotes. I received quotes from 3 different places (one never responded) and Lakeshore responded the fastest. They not only responded the quickest, but also had the best price for a tune-up, in addition to offering a pick up since I had more than one bike I needed to be serviced. Upon arrival, I decided to add another bike to the order. They did a wonderful job with the tune-up and I even bought a bike for my mom for mother's day from them! I hands down recommend this company. I can't wait for this rain to stop so we can ride while maintaining social distancing! read more

I first went to Lakeshore Bike last summer when I messed up my bike big time. The guys who helped me are the owners and they were great. They found a part that would work for my 25 year old bike and fixed it right up. I returned to Lakeshore Bike this summer with a new bike (my other one was stolen) and asked them if they could tighten up a piece that another bike shop had failed to do. Demien remembered who I was from the season before. They gave me great advice on how to maintain it so I didn't have to come back with the same problem again. I have never had slow service there, even on a Saturday. They get down to business. Never a bad experience. I'd say it's my favorite shop to go to in the city and their prices are lower than anyone else. Service is done well and done fast. Gerardo helped me purchase a bike this past fall after two were stolen this summer and fall. I bought a comfortable Australian bike with shock absorbers called Reid for under $500. I love it and get around the city to exercise, ride to work and do my errands since I don't own a car. He's very knowledgeable and can quickly tune up or repair your bike while you wait. I suggest calling over the winter months ahead of time before heading there or wait until early spring to visit. read more

Let me tell you what makes me happy. FREE stuff. Yup, free is awesome. So when my friends and I walked home from brunch and saw a bunch of stuff in an alleyway with the sign that said "Free" - I was sooooo stoked to see the cutest orange bike I ever laid my eyes on. It also came with tires and tubes!! Such a great find!!Looking at the bike, it definitely needed some loving though. A tune up and a new chain was definitely due. So my frugal mind went straight to Groupon to see if I could get any deals. Here comes Lakeshore Bike. I bought the Groupon, emailed for an appointment, and got one easily. It was $50 for their deluxe tune up, worth $75. I compared their deluxe tune ups with other bike repair places and it was basically the same fixins as other places. I emailed about my chain as well and they said they had those in the shop. If I had purchased it there at the shop, it would be free installation. Cool beans. I came to the small shop on the trail front, handed my bike over to Gerraldo (spelling?) and right away he told me I needed to get a new chain ($25), chain ring ($30), and new tires and tubes. Dang, I didn't expect the chain ring cost. I didn't think I needed the new tires as well so I had to run home and grab them since I only brought the tubes I was worried about not being able to get the tires since my appointment was at 2PM but Gerraldo said that was fine. I came back with my tires and was told it'd be ready in 30 minutes. AWESOME. This was quicker than I had thought it'd take. Gerraldo even helped me adjust my seat (since it didn't have a lever) and I found he was a super cool guy and knowledgeable about bikes and even the history of bikes. Thanks to him, I've named my orange bike Carrot! Things to note: -Check in yelp for 10% off merchandise/service!! This saved me $5 which I was super happy about. -Talk to the staff. They're friendly and super knowledgable about bikes. So happy to have gone to them. -With my tune up, I was told I was covered for the season, up until winter! Any air or lubricants would be on the house. And if I had any problems to come to them. I'll definitely be back for any bicycle needs! read more

I dropped off my bike on a rainy Sunday and I was ready to give a 1-Star review because of the guy who accepted my bike that day. However, when I picked up my bike I was able to speak with the guy who actually worked on it (the owners brother) and he was the nicest, courteous and respectful guy ever. So for him I will give the business 5 stars. On that rainy Sunday I told the other guy that I had a tune up at 11am and he said, "you know it's not gonna get done today right?" (Well if I didn't know, I did at that moment). Ok that's fine since I wouldn't be riding it anytime soon due to the weather. So he filled out my info and I let go of the bike for a second because I thought I had to sign something. My bike was balanced on the front of the frame because I removed the front tire so that it would fit in my trunk. Well my bike fell and I apologized but didn't pick it up since I was looking over at the paperwork he had (again I was thinking I had to sign). He looks at me and says, "well pick it up" as if I was just going to leave it there. I told him I am and thought I had to sign something first. Geez. Anyway, I didn't have to sign anything and he took my number and yes I picked up the bike. I know it's a crappy freakin day but his attitude didn't have to be. Here I was hauling the bike without a front tire from my car, down the trail because there was barely any parking, soaking wet and I'm greeting in that manner. I'm not saying he should've picked the bike up for me but damn. I didn't feel bad at that point for getting a Groupon since I prefer to support local small businesses. When I picked up my bike I was able to talk to the owners brother and about the work he did on my bike and I felt 100% better. I might even go back to get a rear rack installed but I'm a bit hesitant. I just think that of the other guy is the face of their business then he should adjust his attitude. Other than that I will give my 5-stars but it was not easy. My bike was tuned up and it feels brand new. He did an amazing job and everything feels right in place how it should be. read more

This was my second time here and it was also one of the worst customer experiences I've had in the city. I love biking the trail, but I am not an avid bike rider. The first time was last year. The man working at the counter graciously helped me top off my tires with air with a hand pump, and talked about tire pressures for my Specialized bike with me. This second time was a whole different story. As soon as my girlfriend and I walked up ( to top off our tires again) the two gentlemen behind the counter barely acknowledged me. Finally I just asked to fill up my tires and they said there was a compressor around back. This was new to me! I didn't know how to use it. I walked back up and politely asked the man to show me how to use it, since the nozzle didn't seem to fit our types of bike tires. He didn't seem to care and just told me to put the nozzle on and press down and feel the tires for pressure. Already completely frustrated by this guy, but I did this and immediately LOST air in my tire. I went back up to him and told him this, and he LEANED IN towards me and said, in a very slow condescending tone " You mean to tell me you REALLY don't know how to use that??". To which I was totally taken aback and responded "Excuse me? Wow, no. Do you have a problem with the fact that I'm not an avid bike rider??" He then told me I needed an adapter. He handed me this without looking at me- I filled up my tires set it on his counter without saying and word to him and left. One of the worst encounters I've had. The man made me feel like an imbecile, since I apparently was just another "dumb girl" to him. The tip jar MIGHT have been filled with a couple dollars from me had they actually been helpful. Instead my only tip is to get rid of this d-bag. I will not be back here again. I'd rather walk my bike with a flat tire to another shop, before being treated like this again. read more

Every now and then I see something that catches me a bit by surprise. Earlier today, for example, at the salad bar at Treasure Island, I saw some dude grab a whole egg (hard boiled/peeled) and stick in his mouth and walk away. That is like, not normal. I've passed by the Lakeshore Bike stand lots of times. I figured (similar to the hot dogs etc that are sold on the lakefront) that it's overpriced and low quality. Generally speaking, I expect anything sold on the Lakefront to be low quality and overpriced. Or at a minimum, overpriced. With my front derailleur stuck on the middle gear and my rear derailleur only moving through 3 or 4 or the 9 gears and my rear brake cable loose, I figured I'd stop in and see what's on offer. With a cigarette hanging out of the side of his mouth, the middle aged gentlemen took a look and quoted me $18 to take care of all of it. He said it would take him about 15 minutes. That is like, a very low price. Less than half of what it would cost at Cozy's, Johnny Sprocket's, Cycle Smithy, or any of the other places I have to go to every month or two when something goes wrong. And 15 minutes is a very decent turnaround. While I waited, I looked over the 15 or 20 bikes for sale. Similar to the repair prices, you're looking at about half of retail. These are used bikes mind you, but by my estimation, you would have to spend untold hours on craigslist if you wanted to get 1/4 retail. So I think that's a very fair deal. Especially considering that all the used bikes have been tuned up and are in good working order. To be honest, if I was out in San Francisco, I would've bought one of the Mountain Bikes for $429. A nice Specialized Rock Hopper. Sadly, out in Chicagoland I don't have much use for a Mountain Bike. Anyway, after about 15-20 minutes, my bike was ready to go. Everything working great. And I will say, it was very refreshing to deal with a guy who knows what he's doing and has an interest in doing a good job. Quite the contrast from the standard bike repair employee who seems to still be working through some teen angst and is probably also feeling a bit underpaid. Overall, it was a quite surprising experience. That dude, should like help himself to a free egg at the salad bar every now and then. He's earned it. read more

I learned a few important lessons this past Friday. 1) A bike tire has an inner tube, and it is this tube that is flat when you get a flat tire. 2) It is a very, very good idea to carry cash or credit on a ride along the lakefront trail. If you find yourself with a flat, you want to fix that sucker ASAP so you can ride home instead of walk (also important if you imprudently did not sunscreen before leaving the house and will fry during the extra travel time). Having no money on your person leaves you in the difficult position of relying on the kindness of strangers, like a candle in the wind or Marilyn Monroe. I do not like that feeling. Luckily, Chris was able to assess the situation and not only gave me emergency air, but straightened out the inner tube that was so crunked it had doubled up on itself within the tire. He explained what was wrong and why, and how to fix it and prevent it from getting like that again. Unfortunately I did not have cash to fix it, but promised to come back. He sent me off, telling me to ride like the wind. I was able to ride more like a fart for about a half mile before the tire crapped out again, which he had predicted since he'd Band-Aided it, not fixed it. Still, it was a free Band-Aid. I did come back on Sunday and was helped by someone else who did a thorough job. The price was as Chris quoted, and I was finished in about 15 minutes. Both visits there were other people with bike woes, so I know they stay busy. They also rent and sell bikes and supplies. I don't think I got a receipt but I checked my bank account online and was charged the right amount. So, to review: flat tires need to be fixed and not ridden on; cash or credit on one's person while away from home; ride like the wind, don't be a candle in the wind. read more

This is the only business I have patronized in the last decade where the price and service were so good I went, grabbed a six pack, and brought it back for the bike shack crew. That's right, I paid them to fix an entirely blown out tire and was so impressed at the quality of the service, and price that I came back and brought them beer. Found them 2 or 3 years ago when I got a flat and had no tube to replace it on the lakefront path. Probably never would have gone in otherwise since it's tiny and barely noticeable. That happy accident has saved me at least $200 since then because whether for a bike tune-up or replacing a blown spoke, they always charge less than half of what the other 2 nearby shops do. Also, a bonus, whatever problem you bring in, they give you a great quote and a quick fix. Unlike their nearest competitor where you tend to get a high quote and a reprimand from an unshowered bike mechanic about what kind of charlatan would let such and such happen to a bicycle. [Thanks Mr. Other Bike Mechanic Store guy, but if I really wanted to be berated for not operating my property in a manner you approve of I'd have bought a european sports car]. These guys are great, and better yet, very reasonably priced. Little bit of a pain to get underneath LSD and over to their store, but well worth it for the months they are open.
