Our guide was the head honcho of this operation, and gave us a true "locals" insight on the lay of the land. Unlike some tours, each Chill Out Lisbon is different, as they prioritize catering to each specific audience. Before you step out on your FREE tour, they'll ask questions to see what you really want to see and learn about the city. How awesome is that. We saw several of the main landmarks, but even more of the "roots" of Lisbon. My favorite parts being the Alfama district, and the grand finale. I won't spoil the grand finale but I'll say it's most definitely worth staying to the end. Thanks to our wonderful guide, I believe their name was Jose, but pardon me if I am mistaken. If you can, please tip your lovely guide; they will most likely let you know they are open to receiving tips.

My walking tour around the city culminated with a tasting back at the lovely wine shop, and not only was Francisco extremely knowledgeable about the authentic and off the beaten path places to visit in Lisbon, but he was also an outstanding historical guide, spoke great English, and kept me laughing all day. I'd read so many positive reviews about his food and wine trail tours that I had high expectations, which he completely exceeded - it was an incredible value. Venha Vinho's tour availability can be limited due to their great reviews, so request space early and make sure to ask for Francisco!

It's like a cool cheesy golf cart…read more Lisbon is basically San Francisco's older, moodier sibling with more hills, stronger coffee, a drink called Ginjinha and an earthquake that rewrote history (1755, I see you). Our tuk tuk was basically a history lesson on wheels. Gotta get the juice before exploring. We learned Lisbon's got 7 hills (again, San Fran energy), elevators because obviously walking is for masochists, lions everywhere because courage or something and St. Vincent's the city's patron saint. Sardines are a thing, pastel de nata is the flakiest addiction you'll ever develop, and no, real pastel de bacalhau doesn't come with cheese, don't embarrass yourself. You'll spot cork in every shop like it's a personality trait. And then there are the tiles, which basically is the city's wallpaper from the Moorish people. June is the Saints Festival, so prepare for grilled fish, drunken joy, and streamers trying to strangle you in alleyways. Fun stuff! I learned so much.

We met them at Mercado da Ribeira at 1130, and spent the next 4.5 hrs eating some wonderful local dishes, enjoying some excellent Portuguese wines, and exploring some truly superb restaurants in the eclectic Chiado neighborhood. Our party consisted of 8 people (Americans, Aussies, English and Irish), all who shared a love of good food and drink. We started out the tour w/ a small glass of the local liqueur, Ginja, then proceeded to the Time Out Market for charcuterie and wine, followed by a walk-thru of the mercado. From there, it was off for our walking tour of Chiado and its wonderfully diverse restaurant scene. My favorite stop was Sol de Pesca, a neat place featuring a large variety of canned seafoods. Simple, yet so, so damn good: sardines, mussels, tuna, etc. We also toured a number of other eating establishments, stopping variously for wine or food or both. All the while, Duarte provided informed recommendations for future visits, as well as some history behind the neighborhood, and Lisbon in general. He was ably supported by the lovely Monica.
