There are always fish to choose from.

Great place for see food shopping. You can find species from all the sees. Prepare some cash prior to visit, no cards accepted. Come earlier, as the wholesalers take best options early. Must see to everyone.

Billingsgate fish market has the largest selection of fish in the UK, aimed at wholesalers, there is always a supply of fresh fish from the coast as well as overseas. I love going to markets, you support the trader instead of giving money to big businesses. And you have the option of haggling, which always makes the experience more interesting. If you're hosting a dinner party Billingsgate is definitely the place to come for cheap seafood. Wear shoes with a bit of grip, and prepare yourself for an early start. Trading starts at 5.00am and finishes at 8.30am, not the best place to come with a hangover..!

Would have given 5* if there were more entrances or if it was more accessible from the DLR... that is not the case. If you arrive from DLR station prepare for a long walk. Do not get off at Poplar! Take Blackwall, then you have to walk less and more straight into the entrance. There is only one entrance...which is the main gate. Bad. I mean is it really necessary to implement such a strict access control to protect fish? Also selection is not to my liking or not very impressive...crabs, prawns, fish include: salmon, sea breams and seabass, haddock, tilapia, pangasius, haddock, snapper, red fish, carp, hake fish and cod, also mullet fish and tuna. What is more special:shark steaks at one merchant and mahi mahi-not always available- at another one. No children allowed. Also very important:they start to pack away at 7, so get there before.

You can get so many good things cheap, a bag of huge prawns for about £6, 3 big crabs for a tenner, squid, huge fresh salmon.

A truly delicious meal with everything already prepared so it was simply a case of putting in the oven or saucepans. Meat was succulent and vegetables were scrumptious. Can certainly recommend.

While we have some truly spectacular butcher shops here in the Bay Area, I must say that the charm and authenticity of Hussey's is on a completely different plane. I mean, you do have to actually board a plane if you want to go there, but it's really a destination level butcher. Their sister store, just down the lane a bit, Hussey's Grocery doesn't have a review written yet - but I'll get to it. I was enthralled from the very first - there's a truly Locals Only Pub that serves Sunday Roast with all the Fixin's - one of Wayne's brothers works the bar there and rotates in to Husseys as well. There's a third brother - I don't believe I had the pleasure of making his acquaintance; most of my interaction was with Wayne. First day in - he humored me: let me take video on an actual camera of him breaking down a beautiful cut of meat for my requested Steak Tartare. His knife techniques are surgically precise and beautiful to behold! I also picked up three house made sausages: pheasant and plum, I believe - or perhaps it was pork and plum. Delicious - perfection. They practice whole animal butchery, and will graciously pause to fill a last-minute order/request or head back to the walk-ins from a primal cut. The butcher block is stunning - Wayne says they never stay 'round much because they're sanded down daily as part of their food safety practice of course, and people just queue up to purchase them. When you do pop by Hussey's, you will note that their eggs are pastured and they do not refrigerate them. You can also carry parcels from the Grocery to the Butcher shop and vice versa on the honor system, and they'll ring you up at either spot. I miss it so much!
