We had our knives sharpened again this week, and once again, they were done beautifully at a very fair price. I've always brought in a range of knives, from very good quality to pathetically cheap, and they have always taken good care of them all. No judgment or attitude about bringing in less fancy knives. Now that they are in the larger space, it's even more enjoyable to browse at the vast supply of kitchen gadgets while waiting for knives to be sharpened.

I have been able to upgrade a closet, open packages, soda bottles, and fix an award plaque, and more, all thanks for my trusty Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. I am of the age when many friends are getting married, and I often see knife sets on wedding registries. Here's a $100 cash and a tip that will save you $150 more: just get a good chef's knife, and keep it as sharp as reasonably possible. You may need a bread knife and maybe some steak knives if you plan to do some bbq-ing, but still cannot beat a trusty chef's knife. True to form, both my pocket knife and chef's knife get a fair amount of work. I have a pull through sharpener at home (though it technically hones more than it sharpens). This one is good for some regular 'maintenance' when the edge starts slipping instead of gliding through a tomato, but every now and again, having a professional but a proper edge does wonders. Now, as much as I would love to have a kitchen knife sharp enough to shave with, I also know this would result in a brittle knife that would break as soon as it met cartilage. At the same time, I have seen many reels of knives that can cut paper on the fly. While I found out there is a certain technique to do so, Northside Cutlery was able to get my knives sharp enough to glide through paper. The rates are reasonable at $7/knife, and the turnaround time is fast. Everyone working the shop was kind and friendly as well. While professional sharpening is not something I do on a regular basis, I can absolutely see myself returning to Northside Cutlery for all my sharpening needs.

The slogans and jingles are memorable, and all is good and fine until you need to visit one. Let me guess, it goes something like this: You walk in looking for an item and an associate who can help you. You see someone in paint, but know they can't leave their post, so you continue looking. Aha! A person! Oh wait, that's a cardboard cutout. (This actually happened to me recently at a big box.) Finally, you find someone, and they tell you where to find the item in question. Only, the entire endeavor took way too long, meanwhile, the house is a mess while you're gallivanting the aisles. Enter Clark Devon Hardware. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and offered assistance. Even if you are just browsing, others will ask you along the way. If you do ask for help, you will either be taken to the item or shown to a person who can help (as in, 'ask this person right over here,' who sees and waves). The team at Clark Devon is knowledgeable, kind, and no nonsense. They know you have things to do and places to be. They will be happy to help you and send you on your merry way. Clark Devon may not be the prettiest hardware store, and perhaps the big boxes may even have slightly cheaper prices (this is unconfirmed). However, it is my go-to for all hardware and home improvement needs, not only out of a desire to support a locally owned business, but because customer service counts for something too. If I am to offer one smidgen of feedback, it's that I wish they were open until later in the evening. The new set lasted less than three months and one stopped working. I took it back and they swapped it for another model as they no longer carried the original. The other one broke a few weeks ago, and between the two they were used maybe ten times max. The store, the manager, and the website refused to do anything because their storecdid not complete any paperwork on the original exchange. This used to be the place for quality products and Furst class service, obviously no longer.
