Big box stores... I'm not going to name names, but you know the ones. They come in orange, blue, and, as I've discovered after moving to the Midwest, even green. The slogans and jingles are memorable, and all is good and fine until you need to visit one. Let me guess, it goes something like this: You walk in looking for an item and an associate who can help you. You see someone in paint, but know they can't leave their post, so you continue looking. Aha! A person! Oh wait, that's a cardboard cutout. (This actually happened to me recently at a big box.) Finally, you find someone, and they tell you where to find the item in question. Only, the entire endeavor took way too long, meanwhile, the house is a mess while you're gallivanting the aisles. Enter Clark Devon Hardware. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and offered assistance. Even if you are just browsing, others will ask you along the way. If you do ask for help, you will either be taken to the item or shown to a person who can help (as in, 'ask this person right over here,' who sees and waves). The team at Clark Devon is knowledgeable, kind, and no nonsense. They know you have things to do and places to be. They will be happy to help you and send you on your merry way. Clark Devon may not be the prettiest hardware store, and perhaps the big boxes may even have slightly cheaper prices (this is unconfirmed). However, it is my go-to for all hardware and home improvement needs, not only out of a desire to support a locally owned business, but because customer service counts for something too. If I am to offer one smidgen of feedback, it's that I wish they were open until later in the evening. Clark Devon Hardware is a great local store for your hardware needs. The store can be a little overwhelming because it's massive and they have so many section within the store. Anytime I've visited Clark Devon Hardware they've always had what I needed. I normally only visit Clark Devon Hardware when I need a niche item that my closer hardware store doesn't sell or have in stock. I was recently on the market for a new screen sliding door and Clark Devon Hardware came highly recommended. They have a special section in the back of the store for custom orders. I prior to placing the custom order I was told the specific measurements that I needed to capture for my screen door. The process to submit an order went very smoothly. I was able to pick out the color of the metal for the door frame and the screen color. But that was the only positive from that experience. I was quoted roughly 4 weeks to receive my door. I ordered the screen door sometime in the early to middle of September so I was expecting the door to be completed by early to mid October. I was told the material is coming from the East Coast and they had to assemble it in store so thats why they quotes a few weeks. I was fine with the original estimated time. The screen door was a little over $300, it wasn't cheap so I expected them to be a little more organized. The four weeks went by without a word from the store so I waited a little longer before calling them up. I would expect an update from them to let me know other would be delayed. After waiting a little while it was nearing Halloween so I called them up to ask about the door. I gave them all of the information from the order and had to speak to several people to track down my door. The first person I spoke to tried to locate my door and told me it would be ready in a week. But after probing the person for more details they described the door that they were working on and it was a completely different door. It was going to be a white metal framed screen door when I asked for a darker grey door. I had to go through another person before they finally connected me with the supervisor. Since I called towards the end of the day the supervisor told me he would call back the next day, I will give him props because he did call back the next day. Apparently the door was delayed on the East Coast and they weren't aware. I was quoted a new date of mid to late November. I was extremely annoyed but accepted the date. The pick up process for the door was smooth. The door didn't fit properly in my frame but it worked good enough so I chopped this up as a loss. I don't think I'll submit another custom order from Clark Devon Hardware because custom home items are too expensive to trust their disorganization. On the bright-side, they have still have a nice selection of improvement items and the staff was friendly. read more

Best locally owned hardware store in the city. Clark Devon Hardware is one of the classics as far as hardware. It has a lot of the typical household items like bathroom fixtures and that type of stuff. Find things also for businesses. The prices are higher than other places but it's better to buy locally. A lot of history about it. It's an important part of Rogers Park and recognizable for the big clock with the wrenches. This business has been around over 100 years. Pretty impressive. While there's lots of the typical products like nuts and bolts, there's also the power tool and equipment rentals. If needing something like that and you aren't planning on using it again after that then this is where to go. The store can be hard to find things but the staff is friendly and helpful. For a locally owned hardware store it has pretty good finds. It's located at the intersection in the name of course so that helps a lot. This is the type of old-school hardware store that Home Depot and Lowe's have replaced through the years. The problem is that these big box corporate stores are poorly staffed and only carry the hardware basics. That's great if you're working on a newer home or building, but anyone who owns or maintains an older Chicago building needs to make Clark Devon Hardware their store of choice. This store stocks all of those difficult-to-find parts that you cannot find anywhere else AND they have a knowledgable staff who are helpful and available (in other words you don't have to waste time searching around this store for help). They rent equipment, and have a repair service for windows, screens, mowers, and snow blowers. This is our go-to hardware store for parts and advice needed to repair old plumbing, radiators, and electrical issues. And despite some of the reviews I have read here, their prices are very fair. An extra bonus is that their store is located in the former home of the Ellantee/Ridge Theatre. if you look closely, you can still find vestiges of the old movie theatre--a thrill for any Chicago architectural history buff. Maybe Clark Devon Hardware is so good because they're employee-owned, which means they're invested in the business and they care. Finally, it's always better to shop and support a local business. This is such a great resource to have down the street as a new homeowner. I've picked up paint samples, household tools, houseplant supplies and more. You can track down an employee who will help you find just what you need. I had help finding the right product to help clear a stubborn drain clog and that product, which I'd never heard of before, is now a staple in my cabinet. They have a wonderful selection of products. I can vividly recall the Mom & Pop hardware stores/shops where you could find and buy ONE screw, washer and/or nut without having to buy a pre-packaged grouping of 50 whatever's. I enjoyed rummaging through these hardware shores for hours and walking down aisles that I could barely get through. All my initial array of tools were purchased in those stores and lasted 50+ years. In those stores you encountered clerks who's worked there for 20-30+ years and knew the entire inventory. The staff here is so on point -- no matter what department you're in, the person working in that department is super knowledgeable and can answer questions as well as help you find exactly what you're looking for. After years of going to Home Depot where you can't get a single person to help you find something let alone answer questions, Clark Devon is a breath of fresh air. I do a lot of DIY projects and being able to talk to an expert on the subject you're dealing with is crucial. Specific shoutout to Doreen in the plumbing department who practically held my hand through my sink replacement project. He was smart, helpful and happy to cut the pipes I needed down to size. I came back like 5 times in one day and each time he was friendly and willing to help. This is the BEST Hardware Store In The World! A true "old school" store where the staff actually knows, and are likely experts in the departments they work in. The SERVICE here is what sets it apart from the big box stores. They will do many repairs onsite; I've taken double hung windows in to be repaired, screens, casement windows, etc. Fully repaired and replaced. They've cut glass and Lexan to size for me. I had a part to an infrared grill that had a bolt with the head off, and frozen into place. They were able to extract it for me. They're well stocked with almost anything you might need. And in this part of Chicago, where most of the buildings are over 100 yeas old, they stock all the plumbing pieces and parts you might need for sink, tub, and radiator repair. He makes sure he understands my problem - then give me 2-3 options to choose from. I love that! When it comes to plumbing, I am always directed to a man in the back who can find any plumbing part I need in less than 5 minutes- sometimes less than 3 minutes! Best of all everyone from the cashiers to the partTime help knows something and if they can't answer my question, they find someone who can. The secret is good training and teamwork. I'm surprised I've never reviewed this store before. I've been here so many times, with and without a maintenance engineer I hired a couple years ago, to the point where I could tell you where a great number of the supplies are. Overall, I give it 5 stars or else I wouldn't have gone here so many times. (I used to go to a competitor chain [rhymes with Chrome Repo] but this place feels a bit more familial.) The key guys are ALWAYS super nice, professional and efficient. I don't know what's up with them, or why the winning crew is over there, but they're a good time. Any time I need a key copied, I try them before I'll even humor going anywhere else. Unfortunately, I had the worst time with one particular key. I have been here three times in the past 24 hours because of this one stubborn key. The other key I got copied was totally fine. Second one? I gave up and got a refund. My only complaint is it's a roll of the dice whether you get good customer service outside of the key section and the aisles. The people helping in the aisles are also just as pleasant as the key crew. But the cashiers are a mixed bag. Yesterday, one lady (older, long and grayish ponytail, slim) absolutely refused to say "hello" or "thank you" or even much of anything. She was in there today again, scowling at everyone, and quietly handling transactions. Then there's a guy by the far wall (near the "refund" sign) with a grayish ponytail who will treat you like you're invisible. I stood there for two minutes, and he said nothing. Another guy (40s, stockier, brown skinned) asked him a question. He acknowledged him and STILL ignored me. Finally I asked should I go somewhere else to get a refund, and he told me the refund station was behind me. The sign is in a spot where it looks like it could be either/or. So I went from dealing with The Ponytails who looked "over" all people to the exact opposite to get the refund. One cashier would not stop pestering me about my dog. She kept trying to get my attention while I was trying to talk to the other cashier about a refund. Again, I've been there three times in one day, and I just wanted this key situation to be done. But the refund cashier wasn't ringing anything up because she wanted me to turn and talk to the cashier, who CLEARLY wanted to talk about my dog. I finally said, "Can we discuss my refund instead?" Then that cashier behind me got up, waved a dog treat in my face and asked if she could give it to my dog. Are there no customers to help? I sighed and said "no, thank you" before turning back to the refund cashier who started ringing up my transaction. I'm a dog lover. I get it. I was ecstatic that the employee outside who was gathering carts told me I could bring my dog in in the first place because some stores (hint: has a red and white circle dart board) give me the WORST time about just doing a curbside pickup with my dog. So I love love love that I can bring my dog in, and she's well-behaved. But please give me a chance to actually do the transaction BEFORE you offer to feed my dog. Even more awkward, the vet wants her to lose 4 pounds, so I have to be the bad guy and say "no" anyway. And now my dog has seen the treat, which makes me feel even guiltier for saying no. I guess between the overly friendly pet-loving cashiers and The Ponytails who ignore you, I'll take the pet lovers. But can there be a happy medium? Yes, there can: the key crew (even when one key is being a pain). Side note: I like their business account plan. It works out very well for condo associations. I hope they keep it. I love this store. Everyone is so helpful. I can find just about anything I need with ready help from kind, courteous staff. Unlike giant hardware stores that are short on staff and long on aisle after aisle. Today I needed a toilet snake. A man in plumbing showed me my options, even demonstrating how to use them. I went to check out. I got what I needed in about five minutes. There was one cashier. So I stood in line where I was next. Then a woman arrived at another register and said can I help you sir to the man waiting behind me. I said I was next. She told me that I had stood in the wrong place. She said all cashiers were open and if I had stood in the right place there wouldn't be any question of who was next. Mind you several people had lined up behind me. She was rude. She was right and she wasn't going to temper the interaction. Sometimes diplomacy, kindness and admitting human error goes a long way. read more

Absolutely awful customer service. Each time we have been there, they leave you waiting. Employees walk by without even an acknowledgment of "has someone helped you yet?" If they are trying to be the local helpful hardware store they are failing miserably. We had a pressure washer in for service. Three weeks and not a peep. After many "I don't knows" or this is what we have, I came here. After walking around and looking confused, a guy from behind the plumbing counter asked if he could assist me. I told him what I was looking for and he took me straight to what I was looking for. He didn't tell me that isn't his department. This guy was working in plumbing. Wow! I had a pretty odd experience, and since it was managed by manager, it sadly reflects on the store and sours me on the store. I bought a socket extender and the price was mismarked. Instead of honoring the price clearly posted, he argued with me over less than a dollar, and forced me to return the item, costing me a half hour. It's sad that the management is so poorly run. So here I was, trying to organize my life and get my shit together when I needed more shelves in my ikea pax wardrobe unit. The Ikea website SAYS the size I need is in stock in Bolingbrook, but IKEA ALWAYS LIES. Since I drove all the way the hell out there and determined to make it work, I bought the next size up and assumed I could easily cut them down. I called Clark Devon Hardware Service on the ride home (Edgewater for me). "Can you cut my Ikea shelves" I asked. "Can I what?!" the voice replied. "Cut Ikea Shelves? Melamine. The ones I have are too big". " Uh, I dunno... probably... bring them down, we'll figure it out". So I brought them down, and they figured it out, and they only charged me a few dollars. Totally reasonable. They cut them right then and there and they didn't even chip the melamine. What a happy ending... ... until I got home and realized the measurements I gave them were off by 1.5" ... too big. And so, the next day I went back to Clark Devon, and they cut them again. When I took my wallet out to pay the person behind the counted said "It's ok, you're all set, G!" How nice is that? My point is that I'm a dum dum when it comes to a lot of this stuff but every time I have some weird home project I go here and find the stuff I need, people who actually want to help me and I don't have to leave the neighborhood.
