Here's a tip - head out to your local $2 shop, buy up a huge number of tiny sealable containers and a packet of stickers, then go and stock up on every single spice you've ever used or wanted. I guarantee you won't spend more than $10 doing so at Khyber Spice Invader. While you're there you can also choose from a range of Indian vegetables, curry bases and sauces, all cheap as well. Worth the trip out to the suburbs, every time!

OK, maybe not a bucket, but quite a lot. Mahadeo's is a spicy wonderland; it smells amazing, and it has aisles and aisles of spices, dried herbs, lentils, and other bulk food items like flour (including rice and chickpea flour). I can often be found wandering around here in a daze overwhelmed by all the choice. There's also a fridge dedicated to different plain yoghurt and paneer, as well as freezers with chapattis, rotis and the like, and a small range of produce - mostly things more difficult to find in other greengrocers like turmeric, small eggplants or curry leaves. If you're not sure of where something is, there's always someone on hand to help you out, and pro-tip: get a samosa if they've got some in the warmer: you won't be disappointed.

Finally, they almost always ask if you've found everything you need; don't be shy about saying if you haven't, as odds on they'll either find it for you, or offer to get it in for you. (Also, despite their address being on Dominion Rd, they don't actually have a frontage onto Dominion Road. To find them turn into Walters Road, then turn into the driveway that points to the Wendy's drive through, and they're just tucked in to your right).

Saffron Foods in Henderson came recommended by my auntie, then I discovered my Indian friends frequented it and so I had to pop in to see what all the fuss was about. Now I am a fan. I find the selection of spices to be amazing, they have the star anise and the cinnamon sticks, different coloured mustard seeds and variations of paprika and chili powder. My spice rack is fragrantly filled to the brim thanks to Saffron Foods. When here I cannot resist the bulk bins with everything from coconut threads to almonds, here's a secret they have the best bargains on almonds in this store. There is a lot of Indian, Pacific Island and other ethnic food, like bags of small dried fish which my girls found disgustingly smelly. To the rear of the store are pots and other cooking implements. Super friendly staff who are really helpful pointing you to the right direction.

Reasons…read moreinclude: * fresh produce * loads of choice * lowest prices Whenever we are running errands I am inevitably asked to stop at this particular Henderson Bulk Barn, not grumpy one bit because it gives me an opportunity to stock up on chick peas, almonds, cinnamon sticks, turmeric powder, whatever is running low in the pantry. I appreciate that the nuts, seeds, cereals and grains are fresh because I've had experience with purchases at other establishments that have entered my cupboards only to disappoint when bitten into or when little creepy crawly infestations occur. This has never happened from my Bulk Barn purchase. The salesperson behind the counter is super friendly, she remembers us and is always up for a chat when ringing up our bulk bags.

A very pleasant and helpful lady runs this little gem of a store. They are dearer in somethings…read morethan your local supermarket, but have some great weekly specials. The store is always clean and I have never had any issues with freshness.
