Also Known as Pine Grove Historical Museum, it is run by the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical…read moreSociety whose goal is the "Preservation of the Past for the Enrichment of Future Generations." It is a non-profit organization, always looking for a helping hand. They were closed the other day when I visited. This location is run solely by volunteers, and had no signs with hours of operation. Ah, but during my visit, a couple of the volunteers happened to stop by and gave me information about the organization. I took a brief walk around the well manicured grounds and found that they have a farm museum, carriage house, root cellar, smoke house, summer kitchen, school house and of course, the Wisner Mansion. While I was there, I shot a picture of the historical marker which is prominently displayed close to the roadway. Their next big event is an Ice Cream Social on 26 JUL 2014 and it promises to be a great time. Hours of operation are 11am - 4pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, library included. Group tours are scheduled in advance. I see it's been a little slow here in updating info, so contact Sara at 248-338-6732 or office@ocphs.org with any questions or to RSVP. Web site: www.ocphs.org. From the owner: In September 1874, the "Old Settlers" formed the Pioneer Society of Oakland County. Members were…read morerequired to be residents of the county before 1840. As time went by, and fewer people met the eligibility requirements, membership was opened to the descendants of pioneers and other residents of the county. Throughout the 19th and 20th century, the Society collected newspapers, books, photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts relating to Oakland County, and the collections were stored in the county courthouse in downtown Pontiac. In 1945 Pine Grove, the Pontiac homestead of Governor Moses Wisner, was purchased as a headquarters for the Society. In 1962 the organization was renamed the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical Society. As part of our mission, the Society continues to devote itself to the preservation of the history and culture of Oakland County, and to maintaining the Pine Grove estate.

The architecture inside is worth the visit itself. There is a place to shop, browse and outright purchase books and other items for a fraction of the cost. The idea lab is a dreamers paradise where you can learn to print just about anything your heart desires, be it greeting cards, mugs, t-shirts, you name you can learn how to create in the lab. If you are seeking peace and quite, sneak off into one of the little cubby rooms to read, meditate, make phone calls or work on your computer. There are plenty of open spaces to relax and unwind with a good book or magazine while still participating in a public, social experience. There are plenty of windows to gaze out into the beautiful park or quaint city scenery. They have books for those that struggle to read with smaller print. There is a very large section of large print books. A children and teen section as well as every subject the adult could want for book selection. A beautiful, wonderful resource for the Birmingham, MI area.

They have an atrium where you can snack and be loud, but the inside has the expectation of quiet! They have a little "bookstore" at the very front, I assume for books they want to retire, and operate off the honor system! Everything is $3 or LESS! Lots of carts marked $1 or 2/$1. I think they may have reading classes or story hour for children in the mornings, I got here at 9:30 and heard what sounded like a teacher talking to parents about their kids! They have toy bags and activities for young kids, a fish tank, and a globe! It's overall a really comfy place to spend quiet time in the Word.
