I've passed by this place during my random cruises. I've found myself curious but I hadn't been curious enough to venture alone. My friend wanted to get some dinner. Good local spot! Be aware that food does take a little to come out so it's better to order ahead or plan to relax for a bit. BUT the food was really great and fresh! We love down the road and know finding local spots in this part of town can be intimidating but this spot has a nice family feel. Was craving tacos and came here the other day. I wanted to try a couple different types. I went with Suadero, Asada and tacos envenenados ( Zacatecas style of tacos with potatoes, chorizo, and onions in a fried tortilla.) All the tacos were delicious and loaded with meat. Had this one of the first times we came to town and it helped solidify my choice moving here for sure. I forgot how good food could taste until I had both of their birria tacos and the quesadillas. We were looking for the best street tacos in Albuquerque and kept seeing great reviews for this restaurant. We ordered the birria tacos (which were ok, but the broth was very blah) and the other party wanted to try 3 different tacos. Disappointingly, they only had 1/2 of the meat options on their menu available. Of the 3 I got, 2 were so dry and tough and didn't taste like meat at all, but the barbacoa was delicious. I should have just gone with 3 of those. A 3 star was only because the service was ok, the tacos would have only gotten a 1 or 2 star at the most. This city definitely has its range of Mexican food options from: New-Mexican to Tex-Mex, or even traditional Mexican. You've all helped me eat better and support more local businesses, so I thank you. Quesabirria lovers, rejoice. I've tried a variety of birria around town with mixed results. Some like to get crazy with the cinnamon and/or ginger in their consomme while others sell a product that tastes like beef boiled in used dishwater. Los Tacos del Rey nails their consomme with: beef, deeper beef, and deepest beef flavor. It is indescribably hearty. They may use some ginger or cinnamon, but if they do, then it's subtle enough to not be the predominant flavor, and I prefer it that way. Add some fresh onion, cilantro, lime juice and a bit of their green or chipotle salsas after your consomme dunk and you're done. You WILL be back. Their prices are ridiculously fair given the state of things for the quantity/quality of food that they provide. I've also tried their chicken fajitas, carnitas chimichanga, and carnitas burrito. They're all the best I've had in town when it comes to what I think of as traditional Mexican food (yes, I know that I included Tex-Mex fajitas and the AZ Chimi, but they're all that I've tried up till now) and their prices are unbeaten when a frozen/processed fast-food "value meal" now costs $15+. read more
