Found this place by luck. Driving through this town with the family and everyone wanted some good Mexican. The ladies are amazing and nice. Food was served quickly. Not very many places to sit and eat but didn't matter we jumped back in our truck and ate. Will pass here again and eat some good food!!!!! read more

Another classic from my childhood days growing up in the Albuquerque area! So, what better way to wrap up my latest visit to the area than with a stop at this gem on my way to the airport, which I do every time I'm there. It's an old school roadside stand with only a walk up window to order and receive your food at. Everything on the menu is delicious and hasn't changed since I first started coming here in the 70s. Breakfast burritos, burritos with every imaginable filling that you expect to find in New Mexico, Tacos, Enchilada, Tamales...Combo Plates combining all of the above...you name it, they have it! I ordered my favorite: The lucky #13! Chicharrones Burrito ($5.99) It still strikes me as hilarious that this item on their menu board outside is still handwritten at the bottom. After almost 50 years, it's faded and they haven't re-lettered it...ever! It's not even listed on their online menu. It's pretty simple...Refried Beans...creamy and delicious...New Mexico Hatch Green Chile...the BEST...topped with a generous helping of crispy, crunchy Chicharrones, all wrapped in a flour tortilla. Simple and an amazing taste treat! My brother drove me to the airport and he had never eaten here before! He got one of their famous breakfast burritos and loved it. There's a few tables out back to sit at to enjoy your food...we did the old school method, though...just planted ourselves in the car and devoured our food... This was THE PLACE to get tacos/enchiladas in 2005 on a hot day working on base as a little Airman with the 150th Fighter-wing. If you didn't know the 150th are called "the Tacos" but that is a story for another day. What I can say is there have been some changes in the creation of tacos from then to now. Unfortunately the taco shells have changed to packaged shells and they simply fill the shell with innards, which makes the bottom soggy and the shell quite useless. They use to fry the shell with the meat and you would have a sturdy taco. This was more of a mess on a plate. But a good mess. The shredded beef, cheese, and tomato were fresh. But then the biggest change: the salsa. They use "Pace" from a jar, and it's awful. Bulk manufactured salsa like this "made in NYC" should be banned from New Mexico. Come-on, you know it! Lastly, they were "out" of enchiladas. I don't know how you can be "out" if enchiladas, but you have Pace salsa... So, I can't rate that. However, the beans and rice were as delicious as I remembered. They were hot, cooked to perfection, and the size was worth the cost. The Veggie burritos was huge and delicious. The side of red chile was just as I remembered the chile to taste like. In all, our total for 4 tacos, 1 Veggie burrito, a la cart: 1 bean with cheese, 1 rice with cheese was $23. Pandemic Issues: The staff were wearing gloves but no masks, which makes me nervous with how many folks they come across. The pandemic makes me feel like food-handlers should always wear coverings. As a disabled human this means the world to me. I hope this was an "off-day" but overall the food tasted good once the shells were tossed and the Sadies salsa from my fridge was put on top. 50/50 may return. read more

I would imagine for many who stumble upon this place two different trains of thought might occur: either... salmonella, or... awesome "Good Greasy" mom & pop food! Thankfully, for me anyway, it's the latter! Mind you, I've always been of the mindset that what I don't know is a good thing! After all, as long as I'm not getting sick, I don't want to know their cleaning routine. Furthermore, as a newbie to the ABQ, I still haven't figured out this whole New Mexican VS Mexican food thing. Large hunks of pork, seemingly fresh green chili & they indeed gave me my money's worth in regards to extra cheese! My genetic makeup--German, British, Jewish and a smattering of what dad says "happened somewhere in West Virginia"--alongside a native heritage of Minnesota Nice predispose me to find comfort in, well, White stuff: snow, food, and let's not mince words here, people. Predispose, mind you. I'm wired that way, but that don't mean I operate according to the user manual. Like the little boy who plays with his sister's toys, I never quite panned out the way the Gods intended. I absolutely crave heat, and that doesn't square very well with my Midwestern upbringing. Long story short, here I reside, New Mexico True. This burrito stand has and always will be absolute 5-star worthy for me. The place is endlessly packed, lines are long, and prior to the invention of smart phones the minutes spent waiting for my foodie fuel were always agonizing. You can anticipate waiting your turn, so you know, fiddle with your stupid Candy Crush Saga, or whatever. It ain't fast food but it ain't slow, either. In-betwixt. Prepare for your fix. Order the green or red all-meat, or go meatless, the stuff inside is good but the chile and stretchy, gooey cheese is why you're here. The tortillas have that slightly-toasted effect, the way you do it in your abode, touched upon the gas-lit stovetop here and there. Dig on in. And at this point, should you encompass anything resembling the genetic riot of my Midwestern innards, good luck. It's best to hide yourself inside your home for the next, like, three days. Your guts will revolt. And you will remove a star from your review, if only because you subjected the general public to this. But seriously, this place is five star. Five. read more

It was impressive what they could do with just rice, pork, and chile sauce in a burrito. The combination of spices worked well. It was spicy, but not over the top. The flour tortilla was nicely toasted and still moist. The cheese enchilada flavors also complimented each other. The sauce did not cover up the flavor of the corn tortilla and cheese. Overall, they use superior traditional methods of cooking. There is only outdoor seating. The menus are on large hand painted boards, and you order from a window. This is definitely under the category of a dive, and wonderfully so. However, if you don't like dives, you won't like it. Some of the clientele were a little rough, but everyone was polite. I love this place. It is off the beaten path and a hidden gem. They have a simple menu, which I like. I tend to get overwhelmed with too many choices. They have a great selection of burritos and some other items. I come here for the picado burrito which features pork, cheese, chopped onion, and your choice of chili. ABQ's best kept "Mexican Food" secret! I used to stop by here back in the day (late 70s early 80s) when i was stationed at KAFB in the Air Force. You're not paying for the ambiance here, it's all about the food. Took a trip to ABQ last year and dropped by w/ my college aged son. We had their patented Chili Relleno and we both loved it. My son stayed behind in ABQ for a college education, and he continued to make weekly trips to the little yellow hut that is now a family tradition. read more

Acapulco Taco is a strange place. It is in an area of town where very few business have survived. It's like a ghost town and Acapulco is the beacon of light.. If like a really old run down light house is a beacon of light, so is Acapulco. They have some of the best beans in town. Hands down. It's like the kind of mexican food you pray your nana will bring you when she comes over. The kind that is cooked for long hours, over hot stoves, made with love and time. It also doesn't really come at a price... except possibly trusting that the tiny shack that holds all the love and flavors doesn't give you a case of the toilet squats. I've never gotten sick from eating at this place, so I doubt you will either. It's good, it's inexpensive, and it fulfills so many tastebud needs. read more

This place is a real gem in Albuquerque. I love their green chile. I always get the number #9 with green chile and onion. They also have excellent quesadillas and chile relleno burritos. I also really enjoy their horchata. This place gets pretty busy around lunch time so it is a good idea to call in your order. The staff is really nice and they have great prices. I would recommend this location over the Wyoming location hands down. Better food, prices, and service. Now is the time for my only complaint about this place. Please stop putting your hot food ( quesadillas) in styrofoam. It melts it if it is in there too long. Overall great place to eat at, especially if you are on a tight budget and want some good food. read more

Acapulco is awesome! The chile relleno burrito is so cheesy and delicious and perfect. Their green chile is my favorite I've had in ABQ so far, slightly chunky and very flavorful. The red chile is red chile, it's good. The burritos are very reasonably priced at around $3.50 each. There are only a few vegetarian options, but I can't complain given the good quality of the food and the fact that they never eff it up and put meat in my order. The service is quick, but when there is a line I always take the time to enjoy the hand-painted signs and decor (the flamingo trashcan is my favorite.) I saw a previous review that said these guys only take cash. They take debit as of three or four months ago, which is great because all the atms in the area are always broken or near a tank filled with snakes (true story!) read more

I have been eating here for over 42 years. I went there two weeks ago and they had changed staff. What I received was the worst burrito, at twice the original price, in all my time eating here. Ever since the ownership changed, the quality has consistently gone down. At this point, I will probably never eat there again. Thoroughly disappointed. read more

You know that one stupid saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover"...yeah...don't. This place surprised me. Simple menu (less is more for me at the moment) and great prices. Acapulco taco is a super delicious no frills inexpensive place where you walk up and place your order. You either take it away or eat outside on the benches. They only take Cash. They also have another location on Wyoming and Candelaria with indoor seating. The tacos are made with this fabulous shredded beef, lettuce, tomato and cheese; they give you this wonderful salsa to pour over it. My husband loves the machaca, shredded beef with beans,onion sauce and your choice of chile. Their burritos are a descent size; I usually order one burrito and a taco and hubby orders one burrito and 2 tacos. Their posole is not always on the menu but if it is be sure to get it because Delicious with lots of onion, pork and wonderful spices. Acapulco is a local favorite and has been for DECADES. The lines have been there for decades and I have waited in those lines for decades too. The food is worth the wait and the price is right, the place is homey and the food is like home cooking. To me the place is real food made by hard working caring people.It is unique. And even with new owners the food always remains very good. This place is a gem. 20 years ago the strip mall next door was full of businesses. They have all since closed but Acapulco is still there. It is fresh. It is not really fast, nor slow. About 10 minutes for two burritos. Very flavorful, but not very large either. The "all green" was pork and it was a very nice spice. The other burrito was a chile relleno. Couldn't really taste the pepper, after being covered with refried beans and a big tortilla. Reason for the 3 three stars is the size of the burritos. This review is just based on one item their taco. The taco shell was a stale store bought hard shell. The shredded beef inside the taco was bland but plentiful. The salsa also had no flavor. I would not order it again for the price they charge. read more
