I am by no means a birria expert and coming from Irvine, have been deprived of decent Mexican food. On a recent trip to the Mercado to get some aguachile and ceviche, I decided to finally get some hot food. With so many puestos, it seemed like the wisest thing to do was to choose the one with the longest line, which led me here. I took a look at the food and the rice did not look very appetizing, so I got a single quesabirria ($6.99), instead of the combo plate, which comes with two tacos, rice and beans. You can either place your order at the counter or scan the QR code and order to avoid the line. You will get a text when your order is ready. Though it was on the pricey side, my quesabirria was pretty large, bigger than my hand, filled with meat and came with a side of consommé, pickled onions and lime. You can choose either beef or goat, red or green salsa. I went with beef and green salsa. While it was a little greasy, it hit the spot. I wasn't particularly hungry when I ate, but after eating it, I immediately wanted another one. I may need to make this a stop before picking up my aguachile and ceviche on a regular basis.

    Combinacion Birria De Res

Birrieria La Tapatia (located inside the famous Gonzalez Northgate Market) tastes like a tourist trap. Currently, it's pricey food for its extremely cheap taste. I ordered the "Combinacion De Birria Res" for $12.99. The "Mexican rice" tasted like mushy, subpar Chinese fried rice. It had an eggy, wet aftertaste. The "refried beans" tasted like slippery, squished sweet BBQ beans; its wateriness tasted off-putting. Most tragically, the Birria de Res tasted extremely bland; there's no seasoning or flavor. The Birria de Res is reminiscent of soggy, tasteless, shredded roast beef. Thankfully, the tortilla is delicious. The tortilla was the best part of the meal. It's thick and freshly made. Regarding service, it's quick and friendly. Overall, Birrieria La Tapatia is expensive cafeteria food. The food is filling, but it uses the beautiful, festive ambiance of the Gonzalez Northgate Market to garner customers. I can't recommend. 2.5/5

I am a bit confused about the LA Tapatia Birriera y Menuderia name. I had always just known it as the place to get Menudo. The last time I came the Menudo was sold out. After standing in line it was finally my turn.... I blurted out " Menudo..con todo". The lady helping me gave me a friendly smirk... then in my halting Spanish I said " y uno grande Quesa Burrito" as I pointed to a picture on the menu. She took my CC and a receipt with a number that will be called as soon as food is ready. Got it. Oh what a delicious bowl of heartiness in that chili concoction of red broth and tender knuckle and skins and tender pieces of tripe. I was in heaven as Menudo is not on my list of daily eating or habit. The missus looked at me kind of with disdain...but she sure liked the fresh corn tortillas that was warm and wrapped in foil. After the Menudo I was genuinely stuffed and we saved the Big Burrito for home. Yes. We liked that Queso Burrito having large chunks of meaty morsels. The La Tapatia Birrieria y Menuderia was a super good lunch for me.

Really great Birria! Birria has been really popular recently so I've had my fair share. This is definitely one of my favorite Birria taco spots! I opted for the beef Birria instead of the goat. They STUFF the tacos with meat. I was feeling full after two tacos haha I also loved how insanely crispy they were able to get the tortillas. Great texture! Delicious consommé as well. Overall, yummy Birria tacos!

This was my choice for lunch when I popped it, partially because it looked good, but also because it had the shortest line. I wanted to try the smoked meat, but it is only sold in bulk, and they didn't have the goat, so I settled for the beef. I did add a cup of the consume on the side, and I would recommend you do as well if your food does not come with it (I think it is in some combos). The consume is very flavorful. the taco itself was a little small, but it was very tasty. They fry the tortilla and then drench it with consume, so it has the impossible mixture of being both soft and crunchy at the same time. Really good. I will probably look elsewhere my next time in. simply because there are so many options, but this one is definitely a good choice if you want birra.

Located inside of the Northgate market in Costa Mesa, this place has the best Birria. Definitely recommend the food and the ambiance. And the market itself has good food and snacks!

Stumbled upon this shop when I was strolling through Northgate. Glad I gave it a try. I got the quesabirria combo, which comes with 2 tacos, consommé, rice, and beans for $14. The tacos are much bigger than the average street tacos. The tortillas are slightly fried in the birria broth until crispy. The meat is very tender and flavorful. The consommé is a little bland in my opinion, but the meat is already well seasoned that you don't really need it. The only downside is the location. Northgate market was really crowded around dinner time when I went. It took a long time to find parking and a seat

Came with my coworkers on Wednesday during lunch break. The market has a lot of Mexican food options that all look good. There was no line at the Birrieria LA when we came to order. I got the beef quesabirria burrito for $9.99 +tax. The quality of the birria was pretty good. My friend who's had birria in Mexico said "if Mexico's birria is a 10/10, this one is a 7/10." They're heavy handed with the grilled cheese skin on the outside of the burrito which made it a greasy and heavy burrito, but the flavor was good. If you're looking for something lighter, get their plates. Burrito: 8/10 Price: $

Yummy menudo! Go hungry. You'll get a lot! My only complaint is that they mixed all the dressings. You will need to ask to separate items. For example, no onions mixed with the cilantro. And no chile mixed with the oregano.

Combinacion de quesabirria and solo quesabirria

Combinacion de quesabirria- 4.5/5: This comes with 2 queso birria tacos with rice and beans. The shells were crunchy and the tacos were very flavorful. The meat inside was juicy. The consume de res is good, but heavy on the salt. It also comes with pieces of meat inside. The beans and rice were good like your average. Solo quesabirria- 4.5/5: This is just one queso birria which is perfect if you didn't want to get a combination plate. It comes with consume de res on the side.

Family Style Goat Birria for 2-3 ppl

Another amazing place at the Northgate Gonzalez Mercado if you're a fan of Birria. Here you can also do family style with options of goat or beef Birria. It comes with rice, beans, salsa and a dozen of fresh made tortillas for a great deal. Everything here was made fresh as you can see the process of everything being made. It's a counter service and you get to find a table to be seated while your dish is being prepared. For my choice I went for the original Birria which is goat meat, and I did the family style for 2-3 people. The portion was amazing as I believe you get almost a pound of meat and generous portions of rice and beans. I had it fresh after the food was ready at one of the tables and the flavor, spice levels and the salsa went great altogether. You can also get tacos here if you're more of a Birria taco fan. Either way you're gonna enjoy your meal.

Birrieria La Tapatia (inside Mercado Northgate Market) Our Order: Birria de Chivo (Goat) Combo - $12.99 | 5/5 Birria de Res (Beef) Combo - $12.99 | 5/5 Both combos come with rice, beans, tortillas, salsa, and onion cilantro. The birria was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned--nothing dry, salty, or overly fatty here. The goat had a distinct funkiness that gave it a unique flavor, something you rarely find since most places stick to beef. We loved the bold choice! Service was good. Ambience was nice. It's a food court and has lots of seating, inside and outside. There's also live music. Overall, a 5/5 experience--definitely adding it to my must-try list!

Everything is clean, beautifully organized, colorful, and incredibly fun. It's almost like Disneyland of Mexican markets! We loved sampling the tacos and exploring all the different food stalls. We picked up a whole roasted chicken with warm tortillas, salsa, and beans, which made the perfect family meal. Easy, delicious, and no one had to cook. That alone deserves applause. The entire market feels like a fiesta. There is vibrant fresh produce, option of authentic food in different stalls, and churros served hot from the fryer. We also grabbed some carne asada to grill at home to keep the party going! And then there is pretty impressive collection of tequila for the tequila lovers! Mercado González is more than a market. It is a full experience for the whole family, and we will absolutely be back. Come hungry and give yourself plenty of time to explore. Salud!

I've been shopping at this location for about a year and have been a customer of Northgate Markets for several years. Unfortunately, my experiences at this location have become increasingly disappointing. I've encountered raw chicken left on the shelf two or more days past its expiration date, fresh fruit and salsa still being sold after their use-by dates, and produce that was visibly rotten and infested with bugs. These aren't minor issues when it comes to a grocery store--they're basic food-safety and quality concerns. And then there's the customer service. Today, there wasn't a friendly employee in sight, and the customers weren't much better. I'd especially like to thank the grumpy woman on the scooter who apparently tried to run me down three separate times. I assume you were having a bad day, but judging by the atmosphere in this store, it seems like everyone is having a bad day, every day. No one smiles. No one acknowledges customers. No one seems remotely interested in providing even basic courtesy. I understand that people have bad days--I really do--but when the entire experience consistently feels cold, hostile, and unwelcoming, it becomes a pattern rather than an isolated bad day. The cashier couldn't be bothered to say hello back or even make the slightest attempt at being friendly, and the young man bagging my groceries was just as dismissive. I've spent years shopping with Northgate Markets, which makes this especially disappointing. Customers shouldn't walk into a store and feel like they're an inconvenience for simply being there. Today was the final straw for me. There are plenty of other places willing to take my money while treating me--and other customers--with basic courtesy and respect.
