Got a chance to sample some of TLP's menu today and it was all fantastic. They prepped everything super fresh, and their service was incredible. I especially appreciated them being incredibly considering of some folks in our groups dietary restrictions (vegan & halal). They are based out of The Hood Kitchen Space so the ambiance is non-traditional - tables outside in the business park. It is close to John Wayne Airport so there are quite a few planes passing overheads, but it is a nice place to grab a quick bite nonetheless. Had a great meal here. This spot is in one of those shared kitchens but they have everything branded as basically their spot. We ordered 4 out of their 6 tacos and they were all good. Our favorite was the carne asada though because it wasn't your typical carne asada. Instead of being like little mini chopped up bits of steak these were actually chunks. They were super tender and flavorful. My girlfriend doesn't usually like carne asada because of the quality of the meat but she loved these and wanted to come back for more right after we left. Didn't know you had to order the salsa. so when my father and I got our tacos, I asked for salsa and they told me I had to order it!! WTF? Since when do you have to pay for salsa to come with your tacos? We did order the chips and guac.. wow.. talk about a rip off. $8 DOLLARS for a small cup of chips and a tiny little salsa cup of guac. Then I asked for water, surprised she didn't tell me I had to order that from the screen as well. But, she never brought it anyway. Won't return. If you're looking for Authentic Mexican, this is the spot! We ordered Al pastor and carne asada tacos as well as the chorizo and cheese. The carne was seasoned perfectly. We had it plain so our 2 year old would eat it. He of course liked the queso-taco. They grill the cheese and get a good crisp on the edges before adding it to the tortilla. We enjoyed the chorizo so much, we went back for another one and decided to try the churros. OH MY GOODNESS, these took me back to the days my mom would make homemade buñuelos. Such amazing sugary-cinnamon deliciousness. The service was great, despite the limited seating inside. The outdoor seat is better if it isn't so cold. The kiosk for ordering is very user friendly. They're only open Tuesday and Thursday currently. BUT they're working on getting a permanent spot (near the airport) that should be opening in the summer, look for it, you'll be glad you did! This is our GO TO taco place in Costa Mesa. The tacos are always freshly made, guacamole is amazing as are the chips and salsas. You can order on line or in person. They are in a shared kitchen so limited availability - only Tuesdays and Thursdays for now - but what a treat and we do look forward to them. Very limited menu which means they know what they can and do well and they do it consistently. The boxes the combinations come in are super sturdy - way over built and I hope that they aren't spending too much on these cute pink boxes because I want them to be around for a long long time making tacos. I started coming to this spot a couple years ago and I know I should've left a review back then, I apologize. I believe my friend I came with a few times did leave one. Anyway, I was here yesterday and noticed a few changes. You don't order from a person anymore, so I can't comment on service (back then it was excellent) now it's just a computer which is not bad. My order came out in a decent amount of time, however the tortillas weren't hot enough. The tortilla tasted "sobaqueada" that's what my grandma says when they're not warmed up enough. They taste like they got heated in a microwave if that makes sense. I doubt it but that's what happens when it's just lightly put on the comal and then you make the taco. Quality of tortilla was good though, you can always tell. Meat was very tasty, excellent quality as before. Only difference is no more guac on the taco, instead I got this light green sauce which was tasty and taco had less meat than before. Pico de gallo or salsa was just was tasty as before, excellent! Chips: crunchy and still the red seasoning on them that's also very tasty. I did notice we got this beautiful box. The packaging was so great that it felt wrong to throw it away! Which also immediately made me think that I rather not have the beautiful box and get more meat and a little guac on my taco as before. I don't care for beautiful packaging or top of the line ordering systems, I mean I'm not gonna eat the computer screen or the box lol Just as I suspected.. whenever you have a good restaurant, once they start growing they start giving you less and increasing other things that honestly I could care less for. The tacos here at Tacos La Piña are soooo good! Lots of flavor and really filling. They're definitely different from the usual street tacos with a fresh and balanced taste that's not too heavy on my stomach. I usually get the Al Pastor, Carne Asada and Portobello Mushroom tacos because they're my TOP favorites here. They've expanded their outdoor seating area, so there's a lot more places to sit too! Found this random taco spot when i was in the area. It's in like an all business area. I got one carne asada and one al pastor to go. They were both wrapped in one piece of foil and unfortunately wasnt tight enough and all this grease leaked in my bag. No big deal. But i was shocked on how small the tacos were. Abt $4 a taco and they were tiny like the $1 taco tuesdays. I thought they would slightly larger like I get at restaurants. However the meat ratio was good and is really flavorful. I was a little bit skeptical, however, Robert and his team made me feel like I was a guest at their personal home. He even gave me one of their homemade hot sauce bottles to take home. The drive to tacos la piña will throw you off because it's in an industrial complex. Don't worry you're going the right way for good eats and great customer service. Be advised that they are only open as of now on Tuesdays and Thursdays so plan accordingly. Next to the star of the show the food: Al Pastor- gazing back behind the cashier you will see a vertical spit full of Al Pastor. This spicy pork has all the flavor components especially when it's paired with a homemade flour or corn tortilla. After trying both flour and corn, my preference with the Al Pastor was corn. This is my favorite! Carne Asada- this was a close race for my favorite. Premium quality Carne Asada, that was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I couldn't exactly tell what cut of the meat it was, but the texture was excellent. I enjoyed this taco, both on the corn and the flour tortilla. It is accompanied by salsa, as well as an onion and cilantro duo. Pollo asado- chunks of fresh chicken, loaded into a flour tortilla with a Verde salsa to help cool down your mouth from the Al Pastor and Carne Asada is just what was needed. If having the opportunity again, I would order these three the same way. The flavors are kinda off, too little sauce on the taco, overall, am not that impressed, and thought you would want to add a couple slices of lemon would be great.
