I am very disappointed with my experience with Ruff House Rescue…read more I adopted a Great Dane puppy and had concerns about having her spayed at only 17 weeks old due to her young age and giant breed size. My veterinarian advised that spaying her this young was not safe and strongly recommended waiting until she was older. When I brought these concerns to the rescue, I was met with rude, dismissive, and intimidating responses. Rather than having a respectful discussion about my veterinarian's recommendations, I was repeatedly told I would be in breach of contract and would never have licensure of my puppy if I did not follow their timeline. The emails I received were hostile and unprofessional, especially considering I was simply trying to advocate for my puppy's health. I understand rescues have policies, but there should be room for reasonable consideration when a licensed veterinarian raises concerns. The way I was treated left me feeling disrespected and unsupported. I have adopted many puppies and animals from other rescues in the past and have never had an experience remotely close to this. I would encourage anyone considering adopting from this rescue to carefully review their requirements and be aware of how medical concerns and adoption procedures may be handled.

Anyone who is looking to make the world a little better can do so by rescuing one of the pups that RHR fosters. Saving animals is not easy for those who volunteer but is worth every minute when they can connect a needy pup with their forever home. Earlier this year we wanted to help out and adopt a pup that needed a home. So we filled out the RHR application and then went through an extensive phone and home video interview and inspection. Everyone involved in the vetting process was very professional. We were impressed at how detailed they were to make sure that if we were approved our home would be safe and welcoming to one of their charges. If every rescue did what RHR does there is no doubt in our minds that every dog placed would end up in great forever homes. Originally, we were interested in a dachshund/poodle mix but had to pass on her because we were not feeling well to bring her home. A few weeks later we went to a RHR foster home to meet a few potential pups. Our original intention was to adopt a similar pup to the one we had to pass on and decided to trial foster a totally different pup who is a chihuahua/rat terrier mix from Korea who was very shy and not very interested in us. From the moment we adopted Ozzy we kept in contact with RHR via multiple texts, photos and videos to keep everyone in the loop as he slowly came out of his shell. It took a few weeks for Ozzy to want to fully explore our home and fenced in yard. Then a few more weeks until he found his voice and proved to us, yes he can bark, especially when we were, in his mind, taking a bit too long to cook his eggs for breakfast. Now a few months later he is part of the family, enjoying playing with his brothers and sisters, keeping up with them and showing that he is truly one of the gang. So if you want to help a pup in need and support the gallant efforts of the RHR organization we would highly recommend that you do so. As a former board member of an Animal Rescue in Massachusetts I can say that this organization truly deserves the support of any animal lover who wants to make a difference by adopting one of their wonderful pups.

The Gus Truck travels so I've only been to this Central Islip location…read more Each time I go it's mainly been me, Ruben, Kate, Melissa & Paul aka Linda who is Ruben's friend. Ruben works the outside & gets the names while the rest of us work the inside of the truck handing out breakfasts to the families. The families get to choose cold cereal or oatmeal if it's available. We make up bags of assorted breakfast items. Granola bars, juice, milk, fruit cups., etc. Everything you need including spoons. I really enjoy being able to help out others who are not as fortunate to have a good meal whenever they want. I love the fact that LI Cares affords you the ability to personally hand out the food directly to the people who need it. No wondering where your money goes, hoping it's actually reaching the people. It is. The appreciation shows on their face when you hand them that bag. Everyone is kind & gracious. So for me it's a win win situation. Everyone including the volunteers leaves with a smile on their face. From what I've experienced Long Island Cares is a great organization that directly helps & effects the community. Check them out in your spare time. Giving back is so fulfilling! Especially if you have a great crew like Denis, Ruben, Kate, Melissa, & Paul aka Linda to work with. I can totally seeing this being a complete hoot when Ruben, PaulLinda, and Melissa on the truck. Dennis may think I'm a little too wired for the morning but it's quite alright. Hahah. Unfortunately Christina and I were on the truck for a short amount of time because our big rush was when we first opened up the truck. But let me tell you... it is so fulfilling to see the community you're helping out. Everyone was pleasant and grateful for our smiling faces on the truck giving them their breakfast. Like I will continue to say next time you guys need me just let me know and I'll hopefully be able to help out. Plus the laughs... if y'all know Christina and that infectious laugh you know it's a good time. So thanks y'all for letting me jump aboard. :)

Visit Date: May 14, 2020…read more I've been trying to visit different nature preserves and parks to hike in when I do my Thursday hiking now that I have more time to exercise with this whole virus. So I came here for a recent hike. Technically I snuck in here while it was still closed because I walked under the gate that was across the way you enter the property, but when I left I walked out of an exit that was in the woods around the property so technically I could have gotten on the property anyway. I didn't vandalize anything or cause a disruption so hopefully whoever reads this review won't try to arrest me for being on the premises in the morning while they were closed. Anyway I had a great time, I did almost two miles of hiking, I enjoyed all the nature, looked at the mansion, took a lot of pictures and had a good peaceful time while listening to my audiobook. I'd definitely come back here again. Long Island doesn't really have mountainous places to hike but the nature preserves and forest areas are pretty awesome in certain places. The environmental association is a place I'd recommend for hiking.
