November 15, 2024 10:36 AM…read more We had a little time before catching our flight and have seen Venchi around town but did not give them a try. Venchi began as a small chocolatier founded in Turin in 1878 by Silviano Venchi using premium Piedmont hazelnuts and dark chocolate. They are known for their chocolates first and then gelatos. The employees were kind and provided great service/recommendations. The lady taking the order mentioned that if I signed up for their app I get a free chocolate. I like chocolate ok, but the hubby LOVES chocolate, let alone for free. I'm glad to get a little bit of Italian goodies prior to saying bye to Rome, definitely a great spot for gelato and chocolate as an arrivederci. Yes it's airport price, but I won't get this in the US so I don't mind spending a little more. Grazie mille Venchi!

got a regular-sized strawberry chocolate milkshake and this is the size of mcdonald's water cup…read more.. and it was 9 euros?! crazy work. was it yummy? Yes. But, most of the cup was whipped cream that did not even have a drizzle of syrup on top, which was a very cheap way of making the drink :/ the staff seemed pretentious. maybe because I am not from the area and it is my first time being here, but have some grace please when I ask about flavors and size discrepancies :( I was so excited to try to this place, but the staffing threw it off for me because usually they are welcoming as a spot like this is anyone's happy place! but omg... the store was so beautiful with the bright-colored wrappers and the sweet smell of chocolate. The store just looked so expensive with the golden cursive as the backdrop for the cashier register area...and then the dripping chocolate fountain was unlike any sweets store that I have seen! chocolates were expensive, but expected. I do wish that they did samples here before committing to buy one because the price per piece was not a small throwaway.

A Cone Dipped in Fresh Liquid Chocolate 5. A Cookie Dipped in the Same Fresh Liquid Chocolate Standing Straight Up and Down in the Whipped Cream All of this was just as amazing as it sounds here. * * * Steve McQueen was hiding in the Chocolate that was lining the inside of the cone. As I was nearly passed out in bliss over Blood Orange Ricotta Orange Peel Chocolate and Whipped Cream The Chocolate in the Cone decided to make the Great Escape. It tunneled its way to the bottom of the cone and all of the chocolate prisoners made a mad escape through the very end of the cone. My shirt and my jeans were completely covered with large pools of chocolate from navel to knee. * * * Wearing chocolate like that is a Badge of Honor. It shows you have really been there. They sell clothes in Italy if it really comes to that. * * * For gelato like that, you should be ready to do Anything !

The texture was incredibly creamy & smooth, and the flavors had this rich, honest depth that made each bite feel a bit special. The panna added just the right touch without overwhelming anything -- it all came together beautifully. One of those gelato moments that stays with you long after the trip. A spot I'd happily go out of my way for again.

In the past, I knew of Gelateria Navona, just a few doors up from the actual piazza, and that was…read moremy go-to place for gelato in Rome. Expecting it to be there one year, I walked over to Piazza Navona and Gelateria Navona had evidently closed. I would then get gelato here and there. I then learned that Giolitti is a long standing gelateria and it's also in the historic center. I filed the name away in my head. Then, one day, I happened to walk right in front of it without even looking for it, so I went in. Giolitti is popular and it can be crowded. I'm going to say that I waited about 10 to 15 minutes. You pay at a counter first, deciding on what you want and how much of it, such as scoops and whether it will be in a cup or a cone. Once up at the counter, they don't rush you, which surprised me. I don't take that much time since I don't experiment much, but I still appreciate the courtesy. The price is roughly what everyone else in the historic center is charging. I always opt for the gelato it in a cup so you can "control" the dripping. The gelato - a mix of dark chocolate and two citrus flavors - was "molto buono." That said, just because it's so popular, I'm not going to downgrade Giolitti for it and complain about the crowds. You downgrade gourmet donut places in the U.S. where their fame has gone to their heads. There is also a spacious salon with nicer decor in which you can eat inside. At this point, Giolitti is really the only gelateria in Rome whose name I remember. I would gladly go back and I recommend it.

Pure and unadulterated pleasure…read more Whatever you have been working towards, You have now encountered Life's Rewards. * * * The leprechauns were confused when they thought the Pot of Gold At The End Of The Rainbow was in Ireland. The pot of gold is not in Ireland. It is in Rome at the Pasticceria Barberini. * * * Pasticceria Barberini is an old school 1920's pastry shop. Yeah yeah yeah, they play Italian rap on the sound system. But the tile on the floor, the decoration on the walls, the marble, the benches and the tables, these are all old school Roma from before the war. I wish they played Neapolitan tenors of 1925 from when the bakery was founded and not Sferra Ebbasta's and Capo Plaza's hits from last week. But for THESE pastries, they can play whomever they like, whenever they like. * * * The pastry selection is vast and massively massively tempting. Prudence limited me to two pleasures. Those pleasures were epiphany, nirvana, and the concluding moment of passion all in one. The first item was a chocolate bigli. (That is a cream puff or beignet - but in an Italian shape.) This. Is. The. Little. Kid. Chocolate. Dessert. Of. Your. Dreams. A sudden Niagara of chocolate happiness. The pastry is small. But you could not take any more happiness in one dose. * * * The chocolate bigli was the second best pastry I had. Yes, you heard that right. Second best. * * * The first best pastry was more of an adult pleasure. Not so much chocolate storming around you in every direction. But a subtle mix of complex tastes with as many flavor-colors and striations as a pillar of the finest Italian marble. I am referring to what they modestly call their carrot cake. Carrots are what merely held the cake together. Inside was a kaleidoscope of different savory touches and ribbons of taste. Orange was a regular accent. Hazelnut was a regular accent. Almond weaved in and out of the proceedings. The longer I tasted, the more I found. I could have studied that carrot cake for an hour Eating three slices but taking twenty minutes on each one. (I only had one slice but I wish I could have had three slices.) Each new forkful pulled out a different accent I had not noticed before. A flavor I thought was one thing turned out to be something completely different entirely. That cake was a crossword puzzle and an atlas of the world and a great big history of art book all in one. I could have gone over the details for ages and ages and ages. Each new detail made me happier and happier. * * * Just for the record, Barberini's was originally a milk store. (Yes, in the 1920's Italy had milk stores. Supermarkets were rare and city people did not have a cow. So you went to a milk store to get your daily milk.) The milk store evolved into a gelateria. They added the pastry and became famous for the pastry. The rest is history. Out of a sense of tradition, they do keep a stock of their own gelato on hand. For all I know that gelato could be wonderful. * * * 3/4 of their glass case however is devoted to pastry. With pastries like this, you can easily see why. Someone someday should let me know if the gelato is any good. But it would take the Chains of Prometheus to keep me from ordering a whole plate of pastries the next time that I return here.
