Super cool vibey place, we had a ball on I think either a Friday or Saturday night when we went? There was a $10 cover that was completely worth it, saw an awesome band there and had a blast. The bathroom situation is a little fraught but other than that it's such a cool space and such a fun bar. Stepping out on the terrace was so cool and the back lounge is nice if you'd rather sit and chat instead of dancing to the band or music in the main room with the bar. Absolutely the BEST any night of the week but truly superior on Thunder Thursdays, when I-Ganic Sound spins all-vinyl reggae and dancehall, and you get in for three bucks. The decor is upgraded and the management is ultra-cool, you just can't beat Bishop's. read more

This place has a rabid following and, in 2023, is one of the few remaining performance venues in Northampton, a scene in a long, slow decline since before the pandemic. Undeniably many lovely events have happened at Bishop's over the years. and it continues to host a pretty good lineup. BUT.... pre-pandemic this bar was notorious for Best Place To Get Roofied. New pandemic-era management and vibe have made the slimy bro presence a bit less overwhelming, but it's still there to some extent. Unfortunately a new wrinkle emerged: inaccessibility. Bishop's has never been great on accessibility but when Honey (cannabis dispensary) opened downstairs, the rest of building lost accessible access. If you're in a wheelchair, you need to climb stairs to get to the elevator. (Yes, you heard that correctly). The Bishop's folx of course didn't choose to make the place inaccessible, but they also have not implemented any significant actions to address the situation. A year has passed since the issue first got widely publicized, and the bands have literally played on. The issue has proven very divisive, with many engaged in an ongoing boycott. If you just wanna get trashed, see a good show by local performers, and party till the wee hours, Bishop's is always a good bet. You'll just have to willingly ignore the people who are excluded. read more

Monday Night Jazz is excellent. The Zack Bartolomei Trio brings innovative jazz and improvisation. Truly gifted musicians. Gabby our bartender was fabulous and mixes a great drink. Excellent beer selection. Jazz every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. read more

Bishops is a fun place and I enjoyed the time I spent there. It's a little on the smaller side so I imagine it can get packed quickly. There was a small cover to get in and they had a DJ. I imagine they charge more when there are musicians. Atmosphere is cool and incorporates in equal parts a Hipster/Noho/Northeast Bar vibe. They have a very nice selection of beers, and cans and the drinks are good too. Service at the bar was reliable and efficient. I found the prices to be fair and that value was delivered. Bishops is on the top floor of a 3 story building that also houses the Sierra Grill and Mulino's. My favorite thing about Bishops was the porch that you can stand out on and drink on, all while enjoying the night air. I posted some pics. I would go again to Bishops anytime and I recommend it. read more

I love the Reggae nights and all the Caribbean and African music they play but every time I've gotten a drink from here I feel extremely sick and bloated the next 2 days after. I used to like this place until I witnessed the bouncer giving a really hard time to people with a service dog. As if that wasn't bad enough he went on to say that "maybe people with disabilities shouldn't go to bars because the noises etc will be too much for them to handle." read more

I'm not sure how I went so long without reviewing Bishop's! It was one of my regular spots for a good long while. On a few recent trips back, I confirmed that yes, karaoke still happens on Sunday nights. The bar is small, so it doesn't take many people to fill up the place, but I always had a great time. A redecoration in the past year has really made the bar look nice. The calendar is dominant with live music, which I can't speak for. The open mic comedy is okay in terms of quality, but Bishop's is the perfect venue for that sort of thing. The patio overlooking the street is cool to hangout but is often filled with smokers. There's even a spot in the back that's slightly quieter, decked out with leather couches. I also have to give a shout to Nicole and Boo, the Sunday bartenders -- their friendliness is infectious and the drinks they mix are deliciously strong. If you like to sing, go to karaoke on Sundays. You won't be disappointed. Sing one for me, will you? read more

This is a great place to dance on a Thursday night. Everyone is feelin the DJ who spins some sick Reggae tracks. When I was there last week, I walked in tired and unenthused and soon found myself having a great time and not wanting to leave. I wish it were a little bigger in there and there was better access to the bar, because this place gets crowded with crazy kids. It can be really tough to get up to the bar to get a drink and the bartenders seem to be pretty slow. The dance floor is also tiny and crowded, but the balcony is great when the weather is good. That's where the party really goes down. My only other complaints about the bar is they don't carry the greatest selection of whiskey and bourbon and my gin and tonics were actually gin and seltzer...yuck! This is definitely a place to come get drunk, dance, and see all your friends. If you're gonna go any day, I say Thursday! read more

Best kept secret? This place on a Wednesday night. Why? Beau Sasser and his merry music makers. Whatever incarnation Beau brings, the Funk is, well, FUNKY. Bishop's is also great on a Wednesday night because it takes hard core music lovers and the town's cool service industry staffers to pack the place. These are my two favorite types of patrons. This is the home of KING, an occasional night when the bar turns into a gay club. The vibe is always great, the crowd is mixed and good looking, and the bar is pretty quick. Not to mention, they have an awesome balcony overlooking the street. read more

Come here and you get to see actual hipsters up close. These cats are an interesting breed. You might even see some neo-hippies... no wait, you definitely will see them here, too. I love this place. The DJ's that spin are great and the bands are top notch, too. Sometimes they even have an acoustic guitar dude playin' early before the band comes on later on. They have a ton of beers and the list is written on the chalkboard on the wall. This might be the only place with more cans of beer than bottles. The other day all the taps were Opa Opa beer. Is it always like this? I'm not sure. But what I am sure of is that Opa Opa is not very good. Hipsters flock to places like this that serve cool cans of beer. Speaking of "cool," this place has the coldest beers around. Perfect for any beer nurses that come here. most beers are around $4.50. Due to the hipness and popularity of the bands that come here, the place gets JAM-PACKED. Bring a stick of dee and offer it to your neighbors that are boogieing near ya. Or take a jaunt off to the balcony that over looks Pearl Street (or Strong Street or whatever street it is) and holler at the cats down below and inhale some second-hand, recessed-filtered Parliament lights, American Spirits, or hand-rolled hipster cigarettes that the balcony-goers be smokin'. read more

Drunk morons throwing objects, fighting, and thinking they can so anything in plain sight and under surveillance will get the place shut down at this rate. The city and police have been pretty permissive, trying to allow this place to continue doing business. It's the only place that has reggae anymore, so I hope they keep doing it, but there's only so many violations a business can get away with. Idiots will be idiots, always ruining the party for everyone else. read more

Actually I did wind up going to Bishops that Tuesday night. And one of the bands I saw, Jeremiah Hazed, won the competition that night and then a week later won the competition at Electric Haze in Worcester. I love love love this bar! Get music, excellent atmosphere, AND decent priced drinks! I went for the Wednesday Night Comedy and found the host to be engaging and the talent hilarious. Beers were around $5 a piece with liquor drinks a dollar more, not bad for this area at all! (as compared to the place on the first floor of this building where beer averages around $7 with no liquor on their menu) The porch and lounge area with the comfy couches were especially nice. After comedy was live funk music and that was also fun! a high recommendation! read more
