I always gotta hit up this spot when I'm in Northampton. It's unlike any other bar I've been to in that it's located in an old tunnel under the train station. The bar is dimly lit and cool inside, the walls are covered with thousands of sleek subway tiles. I had the hummus trio recently and it's not hummus; it's like the baby food version of hummus. It includes an olive tapenade which also tastes like baby food and hardly a taste of olive. Plus some mystery tasteless red sauce. There's also a pork confit which looks like a microwaved pork chop for $16. There's also pizza which I'm sure is microwaved. The only thing decent is the raw bar such as oysters, shrimp cocktail, etc. But it's expensive (on par with other places). The tuna tartar is passable. Hard to say if it's worth it. This is easily one of the best bars in America... certainly one of the best in the region. Every drink is expertly crafted. The service is excellent. The food is great. The ambience is wonderful. This is a bar to absolutely check out if you haven't already. The lion's tail is probably my favorite cocktail-- I think I get one every time. Ive been to this bar on a few different occasions and every single time is an absolute blast! Drinks are always well-balanced and delicious, the food is always cooked perfectly and to die for! The truffle fries and pepperoni pizza are my favorites. As well as the "Jolly Rancher" drink! I've come here several times and always order the charcuterie board! Seriously, for $15 it's the best value and taste I've ever found in a cheese board. The selection of cheeses and meats changes frequently as well as the jam/compote that comes with it. Everything pairs together so nicely and it's perfect for sharing. So we are a little older but just came from a "Wailing Jenny's" concert - so much fun - and wanted a night cap before heading back to the North Hampton Hotel so we stopped in here. I wondered how to get served so I walked up to the bar and even though it was busy and we were far from being the cool kids I got immediate service. A hot and dirty and a Manhatten and both were perfect. The bar tenders know how to make a drink. We just loved sitting in the comfortable chairs relaxing, and taking in the crowd. It was a bit loud, but the vibe was comfortable and inviting. What a great place to people watch. Only stayed for one, but it sure added to our night. We sipped exceptionally well-crafted cocktails (Manhattan and Gin Gimlet), beef carpaccio and fresh oysters. It wasn't the easiest place to find and had to ask around a bit to find the location but once found, well-worth it! 5 Stars for the unique atmosphere and friendly staff, 3 (generous) stars for the drinks here. So that averages to a 4 star spot. You really have to see this spot if you are in Northampton, MA ... it's very unique. It has an old time-y speakeasy sort of feel. You know that famous picture of Al Capone's jail cell at Eastern Penitentiary with the fancy furniture in the dingy, stone jail cell? That's kind of the vibe here ... lots of exposed subway tile and stone. This was once the passenger tunnel which people passed through in order to get to the train ... or so the story goes. It is dimly lit and they have relaxing scented candles everywhere. It would be a great date place. Maybe it could use just a little more 'pop' ... some vintage photos or vintage liquor ads on the walls, date palm or banana plants in between tables ... just 'something' as the bar is warm and cozy but the rest feels as though leather club chairs were placed in a fall out tunnel. When this place is crowded, it must feel more like a train car at rush hour than a hidden vibey spot. There is literally no separation between the chairs. The drinks here sounded amazing on the menu ... and the bartenders were friendly. However, the drinks really weren't that good. They are all shaken in a cocktail shaker, but I felt that watered down the drink a bit. Instead of a big, solid cube, they were shaken with ice machine ice, which breaks and then quickly disolves. Juices are not freshly squeezed and rather are in little squirt bottles, along with mixes. A hand juice press would really make a difference. Perhaps the martinis are the way to go here ... we got mixed drinks and both of them didn't really have that hand crafted cocktail taste, even though they were made by hand. It felt more like a slush puppy ... a few squirts of juice or syrup, add liquor, shake and serve. I have a feeling, the more ingredients your drink has, the less likely it will be perfect. You really have to stop in here when you are in the area if you like unique experiences. Don't expect a drink as great as it sounds on the menu (the woman next to us left the bar with only half her espresso martini drank. She said it was 'blah' to her partner on the way out.) However, the staff is friendly, the bar is super cool and there probably isn't anywhere as relaxing in Northampton. It's easy to find ... right off Main Street. Just make sure to go in the entrance on the bottom level ... if you go up the stairs to the platform, you've gone too far. read more

Super cool vibe I absolutely love the idea of it being inside an actual tunnel. Drinks were the best we've had since moving up here. My husband got the man on fire and I got the El Chapo which was served in a martini glass but had tequila in it. They do have tables where you can have cocktails and smalls bites but we didn't have a reservation and they were booked till 10pm. I would definitely come back. My date knew I wanted to go so he dropped me at the door to see about seating. I was turned away because of no reservation. We parked and he went in and spoke to the manager. There were many empty seats and as long as we left before reservations we were good. We had eaten dinner so we enjoyed after dinner drinks. I had the grasshopper. Yum. Yum. Yum. It reminded me of a thin mint cookie. I had the server weigh-in because I was torn between that and something key lime. He didn't steer me wrong. Next time I'll make reservations!! read more

Go on Sunday. Morganne is working and makes a killer coconut vodka fresh basil Gimlet. And it's huge! And reasonably priced. Okay...I guess any of the bartenders on any of the days could make it, but I appreciate her :-) This is a great space, especially for fall and winter. They can tell you all about the history of it. But mostly, they can pour you a great drink. Since it was early evening on a beautiful day, there were only a couple of other people drinking alongside us. My girlfriend is the best ever so she brought me up here to show me around. We already hit the Magic Wings butterfly museum and another place to eat, so now it's time to have a drink at the legendary Tunnel Bar! How cool is it that this place used to be a freaking train station?! So here's how things went! Atmosphere/Appearance: Very tucked away from "downtown" is this gem! Subtle words in an arch form spell out the name of the bar across the top then in you go! Once inside you truly grasp the simplicity of this place and I loved it so much. It's a tunnel, literally. You can see all the way to the other end with ease. There are several big comfortable chairs with small tables in between them. Some are arranged in 2s and others in 4s, but they can easily be moved to form whatever size party you want. The lights are dim with very little natural light coming in from the doors at the end, but there's very cool LED lighting along the entire length of the restaurant. The bar is smack-dab at the halfway point and the other end of the tunnel echoes the first with seating arrangements. The decor is beautiful and so simple. Service: This place would be a 5-star establishment for me, but here is where they lose a star. I don't know if the staff didn't anticipate the rush, someone called off or what, but service DRAGGED. There were 2 bartenders who doubled as servers for the entire place. It was confusing whether there was table service or if we had to go to the bar to get our drinks. So I tried doing both. So things were very slow, but after maybe 10-15 minutes we got our 2 drinks we ordered. Food: Well, we didn't get food even though they serve it, but we were here for the drinks! I wanted to get something from the "Tunnel Bar Martini Creations" and I wound up with an Espresso. It's Three Olives vodka, Three Olives Double Espresso vodka, Kahlua and chilled coffee. It's garnished with three espresso beans served with or without Bailey's. I thought it was delicious. We had a long drive ahead of us to dinner so I needed a pick-me-up for the ride. Value: Typical martini prices I guess. Mine went for $10.75. This isn't the kind of place I'd come to to have several drinks because the bill would run sky-high, but one or 2 would be cool just to have the lovely atmosphere. We went to a comedy show at the Academy of Music Theater this past weekend. I was looking for a place to get cocktails in the area and came across The Tunnel Bar. As someone who loves speakeasy-style bars, I was really excited to try this unique location. The cocktails, atmosphere and service did not disappoint. Their cocktail menu is extensive with a variety of spirits and flavors to please everyone's palate. We didn't try their food because we didn't have time but it looked promising.
