Truly awful. Horrible smell, rapey vibes and crappy sound system. Why anyone would go there willingly is beyond me. Steer clear!

This is what someone who I assume really likes the basement said to me regarding my thoughts on how uncomfortable this place can make me: "i would offer to dislodge the urban outfitters brand stick from your ass but it seems to be firmly wedged in there with a mixture of smug elitism and yearning for your "college radio days". the effort you put into this backhanded review is off putting to say the least and leaves one to wonder why you continue to patronize establishments that you deem to be so mainstream and played out. This place is super hipster and overpriced. It's smaller than a studio apartment. There is no art on the walls. The tables are rickety. The last time I was there the musician was TERRIBLE and stopped playing before midnight, and the beer was 6 dollars a glass. F**k that B******T. My crawl space has better Feng Shui then this hole in the ground. They call it the basement for a reason. But you know what they say about real estate: Location Location Location. I'm sure you're totally comfortable drinking and dancing right next to the Northampton police station because if you're coming here, you more than likely live in town and you try really hard to be awesome without a car. Rich kids trying to look poor and poor kids who've got no where else to go. Wait they're not kids, because they're almost hitting or are 30. Sometimes they pour a strong drink and I like motown jams. I like drunk/high doormen who try to take legit IDs as a way of telling a girl that he likes her with that forced small talk. read more

I like the music they play here and the bartender is smokin' hot . . . and that's about it for me. I was here for 80's night and dressed in fierce diva dragaliciousness - too much deliciousness for the lack of a proper A/C. I would give this place more stars if it had a stronger A/C and took credit cards for drinks. read more

Tuesday nights at the Basement are worth writing home about. The DJs are on hand to keep the crowd moving with hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The staff is friendly. If you are hip, this is the place to be. If you aren't, it's alright, just keep dancing. If guys with beards and girls (especially the girls from Smith who wander down the hill) with bangs are your type, get your self to the Basement and be ready to leave at 1 with a ringing in your ears. A short walk from the 7-11, which provides a nice place to meet after all is said and done. No coat check, just through your stuff on the ground. read more

This place is really vile. Everything about it - the smell and look included. It's one of the places that isn't ever a destination but you end up there because it's the end of the night. It's not even a basement, actually, it's more like someone's creepy bedroom. The bar is lit, but the rest of it is just dark. I guess they save a lot of electricity, and stay on theme that way, but seriously, it's gross. read more

The events can be really fun, but the space is TERRIBLE. It is inevitably way too hot. The drinks are as expensive as you would expect. The seats are okay, but the tables tend to be pretty wobbly. If you're down for being up-close-and-personal with a bunch of people that you can't see very well or speak to comfortably (which is definitely a valid thing to seek out on occasion), this is the place for you! read more

The Basement is, as the name suggests, a dingy little hole-in-the-wall kinda place. I've been here a handful of times for shows and it always has a relaxed vibe, cute people and great music going on. Get there a bit before the show starts so you can snag a spot on one of the cozy couches. read more

cool place to catch some great music

People here are not afraid to get down! Tucked away down an alley that makes you nervous of your surroundings, its the perfect little hole in the ground. On saturdays it is absolutely packed with people who are pretty and people who are pretty in their own way, but the only thing that matters is that the people like to DANCE! If you're lookin' to dance your socks off for hours to funky old music show up on a Saturday night around midnight. I hear Tuesdays are a good night to get down as well. read more

After a quiet night of as expected satisfying dinner at Amanouz and a visit to my two regular stops (Turn it Up!...for a few CD's...and Raven for some reading material) I was heading back to my car for the ride back home to West Hartford when from out of this building I heard such a clatter. I heard saxes and drums and peered into the doorway at the rear of a building I've walked past many times before. The band was playing and people were sitting and standing. After a number or two I decided to go in. I'd had a beer with dinner and with an hour's drive back to WH in front of me I didn't want to add any alcohol. I went to the corner of the bar and was welcomed by (I think Nancy) the bartender. She poured me a club soda. The band consisting of two horn players, drummer, electric guitar and electric base broke into a Latin number, and as if by magic the patrons turned the room into a lively dance hall. I mean, just like that as if in a show the dance number came up. And then, they didn't stop dancing. This place has something going for it. Although I did find myself identifying the weight bearing beams to get under in case the ceiling collapsed, and it's dark (but not eerie) as can be, I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more
