Bistro on Main truly exceeded our expectations. After enjoying an elegant 4-course meal the night before Bistro on Main continued our excellent culinary journey. We received great service and our 2 seafood dishes were well prepared and executed. We took home 2 desserts to enjoy later and they were both very good. I'd recommend this establishment, a credit to the local restaurant sce

Along the way home. Hoping my fellow Yelpsters didn't steer me wrong. And they did not. What a fabulous place for dinner. I'd not been to Lexington VA before and was very impressed with the town. We had dinner at the bar with Morty as our bartender and host and he treated us with the best of service. We started out with the spring rolls which came piping hot and we're delicious. I took a chance with the Beef Wellington as my main course - which could be a bit of a risk as not many restaurants prepare this well. It was perfect and tender and very tasty. It was accompanied by some decadent bacon cheddar smashed potatoes. My husband had the roasted chicken breast which was accompanied by delicious corn pudding. He gave the kitchen staff a bit of an easier time as he returned his plate with nothing on it. We will definitely remember this place and return on another trip.

"Aggressively ok" would be the way that I would describe Bistro on Main. Having come highly recommended by locals, I came in with high expectations that unfortunately, simply weren't met. Our server was attentive and friendly, and was the best part of the entire dining experience. I ordered an old fashioned, and as any whiskey connoisseur can attest, you can tell when a joint knows how to make a *good* old fashioned....and which places merely check the ingredients boxes. Bitters? Check. Whiskey? Check. Orange and cherries? Check. But this was definitely the most "ok" old fashioned I've had in a while. Was it bad? Not by any means. But was it something I'd order again? Not by a long shot. The cocktail menu is comprised of almost entirely vodka-based beverages, so I shouldn't be surprised that this whiskey drink is beyond their expertise. I also ordered the salad with almond-crusted chicken. The chicken itself was underwhelming, lukewarm at best, and barely seasoned. The best part about the dish was the citrus vinaigrette that saved the salad and made it palatable. That being said, my companion ordered the butternut squash ravioli and liked it, saying it was very filling and delicious. We also shared a Brie with jam and baguettes, and that was a perfect appetizer to split! Perhaps my friend just ordered better than me, but I was unimpressed with the meal and drink that I ordered. I wouldn't be opposed to coming again, but I'd likely want to ask the server more questions before ordering. The couple next to us ordered a gigantic Tomahawk steak and seemed to LOVE it, so I think I'll be ordering that next time I come in!

We're doing a quick get away weekend from NOVA (and COVID-19!) to visit this sweet little Virginia country town and staying across the street so we thought we'd try this restaurant out. Food (5/5): They provided some fresh baked white bread with butter for starters. We ordered the vegetarian spring rolls, which were crispy and delicious. For entries, we had the burger and the Shrimp and Grits. The burger was a large charbroiled patty and served with crispy fries. The Shrimp and Grits were creamy and the shrimp was perfectly cooked. It was some of the best shrimp and grits I have ever had. Drinks: We had a bottle of Sauvignon blanc and tried the special holiday "Candy Cane martini." Both were delicious! Atmosphere/COVID: (5/5): This place was not crowded on a Tuesday night and we felt safe there. All the staff was wearing masks. Service (5/5): Our waiter was great- she was kind and efficient and delivered the food quickly.

    Delicious Butternut squash ravioli.

Once I got there, alone, it took the staff sometime to get my order. Nevertheless, once they started, everything was wonderful. The food is great and the staff friendly enough. I would recommend it

My wife and I, in advance of our Saturday night overnight stay in Lexington, selected Bistro on Main for our dinner choice and made a reservation on another app. Good thing we did as after our 7pm arrival they were full up and turning people away. We were seated in the bar area which has a couple of tables, seating at the bar and seating along the front window. Despite it being a busy night, service was prompt and on point. For drinks we selected a Malbec but our first choice was not available; however, the recommended replacement turned out to be just fine. We also started with the warm Brie which prepared well and to our liking. I was really looking forward to a steak this evening and saw several on their online menu. This evening though they only had one beef entree and it was a special that they had just run out of. I fell back to the vodka penne dish to which I added sausage. As with the wine this turned out to be an excellent twist of fate. The dish was wonderful and I particularly enjoyed the flavorful sausage. My wife though had a different experience. She ordered the shrimp and grits which was delivered cold to her with grey colored shrimp. Clearly not prepared well we sent it back. She then got to watch me enjoy my meal for several minutes until hers returned with hot pink shrimp. Even properly cooked she found the flavors mediocre and disappointing. Our dining experience was a bit of hit or miss. For my wife, I had to take her to an ice cream parlor around the corner to ease the pain.

Shrimp and grits (I asked for them to spice it up and I was very happy with the spice level), hubby had gumbo.

Classic menu, classic atmosphere, upscale casual... usually busy, so reservations are recommended. We live in Lexington so eat here semi-regularly. Everything on the menu is good, fresh, slightly simple. Local ingredients are a nice touch and their homemade bread is delicious.

Greek dinner salad added into our meal for $3. Very tasty.

The rooms were perfectly clean, and lovingly furnished, each one different in size and looks. But we heard and smelled the kitchen under our beautiful room with the red wallpaper. If you do not like train sounds , better do not take this room but take a room overlooking the front of the house with its impressing, well taken care of oak tree. Also, be aware that the mattress in the red room is very soft. The overnight price was fine, but all the extras chosen by us, like food, wine, and flowers were rather pricey. We would like to return to this friendly BnB - but would choose a firmer mattress - we are sure the charming owners could help us choose!

The first-floor restaurant will send up dinner if you just call down and request it. I was in the mood for a steak and they had a terrific ribeye available the night I was there. Simply seasoned with salt and pepper and perfectly grilled, with flavorful garlic mashed potatoes, it made a satisfying dinner. There's plenty of complimentary parking right onsite and the Appomattox National Park is less than ten minutes away by car. The cocktail and mocktails were flavorful and well priced. Our waiter was great. Very knowledgeable about the menu, town and ingredients. We started with the Chicken Liver pate. This was well prepared, although I hate when a restaurant provides an odd number of toasts for two people. We asked for an extra piece and thought it was funny that they gave us exactly one. FYI- it comes with several accoutrements which were tasty, but the mustard was really the most satisfying. My wife had the brisket, which I would call a must have. Fantastic Asian spices, fried rice ball and Kimchi. Just an explosion of flavors. I was glad she shared. (This is uncommon) I had the pork chop and it was really pretty. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor and I had to carve off the fat which made up about 1/3rd of the chop. The bone was the other third...so it turned out to be a thick but modest cut. That said, it was on a lovely bed of mash and some of the best blue and white carrots I ever had. We finished with the carrot cake. (All of the desserts are made onsite.) which we learned was gluten free. Honestly if it was marked GF I wouldn't have ordered it. Anyway, when it arrived I thought we received the wrong thing. It looked like a decorative cliff bar. Once we took a bite we were blown away by the flavors and texture. It was delicious. Such a great experience. We were near the kitchen, so we got to see the head chef get orders out. There were some highs and lows, but the overall experience was really nice.

We stopped in Thursday February 5, 2026. The cozy space, complete with a locally painted on the wall, gives it a warm, welcoming feel. In speaking with the matrade we learned the name of the restaurant comes from the Native American word that has become Shenandoah. After 20 years in business it's clear this place has deep local roots. The staff was friendly and attentive. Kyle, our waiter, did a great job and worked seamlessly with his teammates to make the experience memorable. We started with cocktails -- my wife had the Sage Advice and I had a classic Manhattan. Proper cocktails for sure! The crème brûléed cornbread and sweet potato bisque were standout starters. Probably could have stopped eating after those starters...For mains, my wife loved the pork loin and I enjoyed the pan-seared trout. We finished with the banana mousse, which was absolutely amazing! Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Highly recommend if you're passing through Staunton. definitely worth the stop.

Every time I dine at this restaurant I have a memorable dining experience. One of my favorite items…read moreon their summer menu is their R&R Hanger Steak. A Hanger steak is a long, flat, flavorful cut reminiscent of flank steak and skirt steak, only more tender. In the US, hanger steak is most commonly called "hanging tender" or "butcher's steak." It gets the latter nickname because it was historically a "secret" cut that butchers would keep for themselves rather than sell to the public. Other names you might see on menus for this cut are Hanging tenderloin and Bistro steak. All that I know is that it's the best piece of meat that I have ever eaten and it has been at this restaurant. So that was the main reason I came to dine here today and my expectations were completely fulfilled. When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly, young lady with the warm welcoming of a regular guest. She happily took me to the table I had requested when I made my reservation online. It was a table facing the bar with their open kitchen on the right of me. I like to watch the bartenders and chefs in action as they create their amazing drinks and culinary masterpieces. Immediately after I was seated my server Tim came by with the usual familiar greeting, welcoming me once again for returning to dine there and thanking me for being such a loyal customer. I had the usual cold water and this time started off with one of their Butterfly Kisses Mocktails. It both looked and tasted amazing. For appetizer I had their VA Oyster Wraps, followed by their special salad of the day. And for the main entrée I had their R&R Hanger Steak. Everything was timed appropriately and was served at the right timing. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food and drinks. For dessert I had my favorite, their Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta. What a way to end a spectacular dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant for an exceptional fine dining experience.

While The River and Rail has many things going for it: great location, adorable atmosphere, fancy…read moreand delicious cocktails and delicious food, one thing they don't have going for them is their ability to stay true to their operating hours. My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.
