Wow! As a little family, meat & 3 type place back off the road between the highway and state park I expected a nice, tasty basic meal. What I got was professional chef level FLAVOR, A+ service and just all-around satisfaction! Hubby & i considered ordering the seafood platter and sharing it because we are working on portion control, but I was considering the trout but it's a pasta featuring dish and I'm limiting refined carbs. I ordered the southern fried fish (swai) but opted to get it grilled so I could "justify" the hand cut fries I spotted when we were being seated. It was the perfect choice! The fish was perfectly seasoned and perfectly plated. Soft and tender and no extra grease. Of the sides, it's difficult to pick a favorite! I cannot recall if I've EVER such phenomenal collards! Truly, the texture, balanced mix, of onions & bacon & vinegar without being soupy. Each bite was savored. Homemade hush puppies with just a touch of corn kernels and buttery batter- mmmh- chef's kiss! The handout fries were everything I hoped for and when she arrived with the "London's Pub" brand I knew they took their work seriously! Nothing fancy just good eats! Hubby opted for the grilled shrimp with old bay and the portion was generous and again, tender! The food was gone too quick for photos, so I snapped these. The server enjoyed her job and knew all the details of the menu and you could see the rapport among all the staff and kitchen leads which as someone who worked in the industry for 8 years many moons ago, I appreciate how much that impacts the customer's experience! We stopped in after a hike Roaring Run before heading back up the mountain to the state park around 2:30. The service was excellent and the people were super friendly. The food was good, I had the breakfast omelette with bacon. It was lacking in the amount of bacon IMO. The eggs were a bit overcooked which made them not nearly as good as it should have been. My daughter had the make your own sandwich and said it was ok. Our other family members had the burger and said it was good and someone else had a build your own sandwich and said it was great. My favorite thing we had was the fried mushrooms they were delicious. I would like to come back and give them another try during lunch or dinner time. read more

Family Tree Ts Cafe lures you with its warm, homey diner vibe and a cheerful hostess who lets you choose your seat. The fried pickles appetizer was the lone star--crisp, tangy, genuinely satisfying. But it's all downhill from there. The sweet tea? Bland and unremarkable. My wife's cheeseburger, explicitly ordered no onions and well-done, arrived buried in onions and a pink, medium mess. My double ribeye, requested medium-rare, was served overcooked to well-done--a far cry from the juicy promise. When I pointed out the steak's doneness disaster, the waitress tossed out flimsy excuses about the kitchen "still dialing in" temperatures and cooking times, with no offer to replace or fix it. Worse, these smaller "new" steaks carried the same price tag as the former 16-ounce ribeyes. Sides? Coleslaw was decent, but the potato salad was a flavorless letdown, and the fries had an odd aftertaste like it was cooked in overused fryer oil. Service started rough--our waitress, delayed by a to-go order call, left us waiting for drinks with only a half-hearted apology. A measly 10% discount at the end was an insult for a meal this botched. Whatever chaos gripped Family Tree Ts Cafe that night, it's not worth your time or money. I will not be going back and can not recommend it as a place to stop for food in the area. One star for the hostess and that appetizer. read more

We enjoyed our dinner of the fried fish and country fried steak. They have nightly specials and lots of comfort foods to choose from. Our server was very friendly and kept our drinks full. This is a quaint family restaurant that serves delicious food. You walk in and are greeted with a hi and a smile. The menu doesn't seem super big but they do have specials on different days. They also serve breakfast all day! I got the fried mushrooms which were fresh from the fryer and yummy with ranch dip. I also got the spoiled brat which is powdered sugar, whipped cream, and maple syrup on vanilla French toast or pancakes with side of eggs over easy and bacon. It was super delicious! And a pretty decent portion. Family had southern fried fish platter and the taste I had was yummy. Kid had a cheeseburger and it seemed ok. Sorry for the half eaten pictures- I always forget to take a picture before eating. Anyway, in the ladies bathroom there are sweet encouraging messages on the walls. My father in-law asked about why there weren't many doughnuts in the case (they sell doughnuts) and they offered to make us some on the spot if we wanted some! So sweet! read more

Wonderful little gem of a restaurant hidden off the main road and absolutely worth the drive. It's situated in an old country store and had a great "home cooking" feel to it. My second visit. I seem to get hungry on my way back from WVA. The meatloaf with collards and green beans with a fresh roll on the side knocked my appetite back for nearly eight hours. Very tasty! Lots of options but the ribeye was not available till after 4 pm. Service was friendly and efficient. The old general store building has nice ambiance with high ceilings and wood floors. I found Ts on a road trip to Virginia from St Louis. The food, service, and ambience were all so good, I made a point of stopping here again on my way back home the following week. This is a comfy, homey place. Feels like you've dropped in at a friend's farm for lunch. I had the same two servers both times and I felt they took their jobs seriously and had a determination to always give great service. My first lunch was the lasagna special that day. I'm a very good lasagna maker myself and I was really impressed with the flavor and the presentation since it was served in its own baking dish. I also happened to spot "Deep Fried Avocado Bites,' in the appetizer section and couldn't resist giving them a try. They were so delicious, I ordered them again on my return visit and even got another order to go when I left. What was in that amazing lime flavored cream that came with them??? I'm going to attempt to make these at home this week. For my return lunch, I had the fish, with a portion so big, half of it became my dinner. I stopped here both times in October, so I'm sorry it took me so long to compose a review. I definitely recommend you stop in here and in fact, I've already recommended it to two friends who live in Virginia. Family Tree is, hands down, the best restaurant in Alleghany County. The food is home cooked, with generous portions, fairly priced, and absolutely delicious! I've not tried their breakfast menu but their lunch choices are plenty and varied, something for everyone. This place is a treasure to find - located in Low Moor (between Covington and Clifton Forge, VA). Once inside, you will find super friendly service and charming, country decor. Similar to Cracker Barrel, there are many items for sale (jams, t-shirts, home decor, jewelry etc) in addition to delicious food. I usually come here on Wednesdays for their liver and onions. On Thursdays, the special is meatloaf. The portions are generous and the food is outstanding. You can't go wrong with anything here. They also have a bakery and bar inside. Make sure you pay a visit.
