I was looking for a dramatic change to my hairstyle and didn't want to go to a random hair salon where it could have easily messed up. I know Amber K ( the other reviewer) and asked her where she got her hair done because it does look super nice and she suggested Biyoshi after researching herself the best places to go. I went in with an appointment when it was opened and it does get busy fast so even though they do welcome walk-ins, I suggest making an appointment or calling ahead. With the hair style I had in mind, Andrea went at it and after cutting about ~10 inches off it looked amazing. I feel like a new person and am totally in love. Thanks Biyoshi! read more

canceled my appointment an hour before appointment time. after I dropped and dispersed my kids at their grandparent house and started making my way there. My haircut is simple, easy, and fast. anyone could have taken 3 inches off and especially were I was coming in with it already washed and ready to go. I'd even asked if there was someone else there willing. Manager seemed very unimpressed with the efforts I made to be there on time and unsympathetic to my circumstances. maybe they figured they weren't gonna make bank off of a haircut, however I'm a great tipper. They canceled it because the hairstylist took on a color re-correction, but I'm such an easy cut I feel like they could have respected my time and effort to be there and cut while the color was processing. they simply didn't care for my business and thought a simple cut wasn't worth their time. Fortunately I did reach out to another salon and after I explained my circumstances they squeezed me in. They were apologetic for the other salons mistreatment and showed me wonderful customer service. I'm a simple haircut, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't make good money off of it. Believe me the hairstyle willing to fit me in and sympathize with the circumstance of being a mom of four will be tipped big time and have a loyal customer. this wasn't just a fail of the hairstylist Addie but the salon as a whole. read more

I had a generally fine experience here, but I won't be returning. Had a partial foil and a haircut for long hair. Juliette was easy to work with when I described how I'd like my hair lightened. However, the owner (head stylist?) came over about halfway through the foil and took over, instructing her to do the hair differently. She even stopped her mid-foil a few times to adjust the process. It was a little weird; while I appreciate the fact that she stepped in if it meant improving my hair, she didn't tell me what she was doing or why. It felt a little bit like I was a tester at a salon school. Juliette did a lovely job on my cut - long layers, good volume. My biggest issue was the whopping $135 I was charged for my highlights. On the website, it says "color treatments" and "highlights" are $85 and up; I was expecting maybe ~$105 or so. That is an enormous discrepancy. Furthermore, I felt like I shouldn't be paying that much money for my color because it seemed like the head stylist was still training Juliette. My color turned out fine - a little streaky. Definitely have had better, and paid way less for it. read more

I hate having to do this. Emily was really nice. But damn, my hair looks butt. If the purpose of a hair salon is to make your hair look good, then yeah this place gets 2 stars. I have the equivalent of a chunky bowl cut. And no, I did not ask for a chunky bowl cut. My friends are doing the whole "your hair looks... cute" routine for me. I appreciate the thought. One of my roommates is trying to pretend she doesn't notice I got my hair cut. Random old guys on the train are not trying to talk to me. Which I guess is a good thing. I visited this salon when it was located in Allston, and my first experience was great! I was super psyched and relieved to have found a stylist in Boston. Sadly, my second haircut (with the same stylist) was awful. The cut was extremely lopsided (picture left-side layers starting at my cheekbone and right-side layers starting at my chin), and the bangs were awkward. I'm a big proponent of speaking up when a haircut isn't what you expect, so I nicely asked if it was possible to even things out a bit. The recovery-attempt didn't work, though, and I left disappointed (and with pretty shredded hair). From the yelp reviews, it looks like this particular stylist is still working at Biyoshi and doing a good job, so maybe I just experienced an off day(?) Even so, it took me over a year to grow everything out, so I won't be returning. read more

Biyoshi is a hidden gem. Andrea and Michelle are amazing stylists. My hair is not easy to cut and Andrea makes me look damn good every single time with no exceptions. I daresay she is the human equivalence of Photoshop. Biyoshi's prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, attentive, and accommodating, and they have mad skillz. Don't even hesitate. Go here for a haircut. I promise you it will rule. Don't go to Pigs Can Fly next door and eat their round scone looking things. They are not good. read more

This is by far my most trusted and favored hair salon that I've been able to find - worldwide. I've spent way too much money in salons prior to finding Biyoshi, and never received what I was looking for. After going to Michelle, the owner (and the crew there who are just amazing people), I realized that she was much more knowledgeable about different styles, and understood the underlying meaning of "low-maintenance" and vague sentiments I had about my hair. As they cut your hair, they straddle the perfect mix of candid personal talk with complete professionalism. I have not yet received a hair cut that I have not loved from there! When I first started to go to Biyoshi, I was riddled with badly-dyed hair, and my scalp was not in the best condition. Michelle gave me a few suggestions about the dye-jobs and proceeded to let me know about how some other clients have repaired their scalps (which included getting off of shampoos that contained sulfides and parabens). Instead of pushing some product that they were selling, she gave this information to me for free, and within months, my scalp and hair were better. Years later, the problem no longer persists. Everyone who works there knows what they are talking about, and all of my friends who I have taken there have been very happy with their haircuts. I have moved to Germany and have still yet to find someone at Biyoshi's caliber. As a result, I refused to cut my hair for 3 years until I was able to see Michelle again. Even after 3 years, she remembered all the details about my life, and also remembered which side my hair parted, as well as which haircuts I have already done (since I like to get a different one each time). Michelle is AMAZING at edgy haircuts, so if you're looking for something fun, don't hesitate to ask - she has great ideas. The pricing, in my humble opinion, is completely worth what they are bringing to the table and how you will feel afterwards. I love my dye job from the lovely ladies of Biyoshi! Michele, Carrie, and Andrea were all wonderfully helpful in helping me pick a color (we went with Aubergine) and select the process/combination that would maximize the dimension. I now have the shiniest, most intense color of my life. That same weekend, I came back for an updo. Michelle added an amazing amount of volume to my thin hair-- perfrctly avhieving the glamorous look I was going for. I will definitely be returning to Biyoshi the next time I need a cut, color or style. Tip: Parking police in the area are brutal! Make sure to leave plenty of time on your meter-- they are known to ticket immediately. read more

Michelle has been cutting my hair for the last 7 years and I'm ashamed it's taken me so long to write a review! When I first moved to Boston from New York City, I tried 3 different barbers and ended up with awful haircuts. Sure they were cheap, but you get what you pay for! When I first went to Michelle, I told her I wanted something clean cut with style. She started by cutting my hair with just a small razor blade! Never had that done before. I'm so sad to see the bad reviews for Biyoshi. I've been going to this salon for almost four years, and had cuts by Andrea and Michelle (the owner), both of whom are very talented stylists. Even though I live in Malden and it takes me well over an hour on the T to get to the salon, I continue to go because I always get great cuts and friendly, non-pretentious service for half the cost of most Newbury salons. Andrea always takes time and takes my requests and opinions into consideration. If you're a "see and be seen" type, the location probably won't impress you much, from the outside, but who cares? The salon is very clean and stylish, and the cuts are great. (Note- I've never had color in my life, so I can't provide any insight) read more

I forgot to mention another thing Michelle did to my hair. In the middle of the bangs that I DID NOT want, she used thinning shears! I have thin hair and did not need my hair to be thinned that close to the scalp. Now, my have like 30 strands of hair sticking up in the bang area. I hate wearing hairspray or gel. Now I am forced to plaster down my hair. I mentioned this to another stylish and she was aghast. I used to always feel nervous when getting my hair cut, but I now know whenever I go I will leave feeling like a new and improved person. Wow... I'd been going to several salons on Newbury Street for years, but none could give me the consistent, modern cut I've been looking for. After reading a few reviews here on Yelp, I booked an appointment with Michelle, and she absolutely blew me away! Unlike any other stylist I've had in the past, she was able to look at the shape of my face and interpret what I wanted into exactly what I asked for - a men's swept-back style with natural texture that holds. Using a razor - a technique I've never even heard of before - she gave me probably the best cut I've ever had. And once my hair grows longer, the style will look even better. I've never had a haircut I really loved and felt was worth the $$ until now. I always feel intimidated going to salons, because I don't really know what I want, and definitely don't know how to describe anything hair-related. Michelle was super patient with me, and helped my poor triangle cut get some amazing layers and color. Really, this might be the first time I've ever been crazy excited about a haircut. Also, she's FAST. Highlights, cut, and blow dry was done in just over an hour. Chose this place for the great reviews, but I'm sorry to say I left uninspired. Carrie was super nice, and tried very hard to understand what I wanted and produce it, but I am looking for a stylist who knows what my hair/face needs and can give me expert advice and results- without me "backseat haircutting" every move. I have been going to Biyoshi since 2002, and I have referred probably over 10 people here and all of them have been happy. Andrea has been in charge of my nappy hair for going on 7 years. The reasons I continue to go back? She understands how to cut curly hair, she does amazing color, she focuses on her work and gets into it--the girl knows what she is doing, and balances your requests as a client with what is actually physically possible with your particular hair. Even after all of this time, she checks in with me throughout the cutting process ("ok, we're going to do this to the front...do you want it like this or did you mean that?) With Andrea, there is no way you're going to get a nasty surprise haircut. She is super low-key and a sweet person, which doesn't hurt. Michele, the owner, is extremely professional and also very friendly. The salon has a lot of space and they are always playing good music. There is fluffy kitty who lives there. The only drawback is that parking is a bastard around there, and it's in Allston. But I will brave the B-line and BU undergrads every 6 weeks to get my melon styled. It's worth it. This is the only hair salon I trust. I've had three different people do my hair here over the past six years and have always been happy. I've went here on and off for the past five years (I've moved locations during this time, but I usually just travel here now for my cuts). I don't get difficult cuts at all but I have really difficult hair that can be hard to style. They listen to what I want and style my hair at the end how I like it, and make my hair look really healthy. I usually don't need a cut again for a while from the way the cut it. After bad experiences with Boston salons, I was at first wary of my appointment here. I had always passed by the salon on my way from the gym and decided to take a chance on it. I definitely don't regret it! For the quality the price is more than reasonable. She always takes the time to listen to what you want to do, and will give you great advice if you're not sure what to do. I wanted to try something different and get red highlights in my hair. I went to Biyoshi because of the yelp reviews and because it's right around the corner from my house. The atmosphere: it's a small, unassuming place. There was only Michelle, the owner and my stylist, no receptionist, no separate person washing hair. All of that was fine by me- it was a relaxed, down to earth place, and Michelle was friendly and welcoming. She had one other woman getting color/cut at the same time, and did a very good job of making sure neither of us felt neglected or like we were waiting unnecessarily. She listened to what I wanted: I wasn't 100% sure I was clear, or that she got it, but she went to town with paint brush and then scissors. I'm definitely not well versed in hair vocab, so I was pretty nervous as to how it would turn out, but she gave me exactly what I wanted. The color is fantastic, she paid attention to my requests, the cut is perfect, and she took the time to blow-dry my very long, thick, wavy hair to a beautiful straight shine (after asking me if I wanted to finish it straight or curly- I always appreciate when a stylist gives me the choice!). Overall very happy. Not cheap, but I think average for the nicer salons in Boston/Brookline, and for me- with crazy hair that has made several stylists give up before- it's worth it. The biyoshi environment is warm and nice- the owner Michelle is extremely friendly and makes sure that you are comfortable. Juliette, my hairdresser, is amazing at her job and is especially great at dying hair. When I come in my hair is usually in an awful state, but Michelle and Juliette both help me leave feeling both relaxed and beautiful. This was the second time I was there. The first time Michelle did my hair cut and I really liked it! I just went there 2 weeks ago, I didn't specifically ask for a particular stylist because I knew for the reviews that all of them are very good. This time Juliette did my haircut and she did a great job! She was kind and very good at communicating with you, to get what is best. Really this is a great place to go! I would recommend you to go with Juliette but if you are in a rush and she is busy, just get an appointment, all of them are for sure very good! read more

If you want to be disregarded as a customer and leave with a bad haircut and $300 poorer, then go to Biyoshi. My stylist would not listen to me when I wanted to discuss color and instead thought she knew best. She then refused to thin out my hair because, of course, she thought she knew better, and gave me a horrible cut in about 10 minutes. The front has pieces that are of random length, and it's puffy because she wouldn't thin it out. I need to get it fixed. I honestly felt like I was in the twilight zone, which culminated with her not letting me sign my own credit card receipt! She did it for me!
