The people working at this salon truly made the experience sooo satisfying. My hair came out amazing and it was easy to get an appointment. Everyone here is very nice. I'd totally go and grab drinks with them BUT that does not mean they are good hair dressers. I had Jessica. She's a wonderful conversationalist, and I enjoyed her. However my hair now looks like "daddy let me play with scissors while mommy was taking a nap on the couch". It looked okay blow dried, but absolutely terrible with my natural wave. The layers are terrible and there's a definite "shelf". They are way too short to get them fixed, so I'm thinking I have to either wait 6 months to let it grow out or go to a real salon and get a short hair cut. I see in the other comments that she is great with straight, thick Asian hair (lucky biatches), but that's not the same as thin wavy hair. My advice: save up and go to a real salon. You owe me 40 bucks. read more

I hadn't had a haircut in a few months, and was trying to find something for a non-ridiculous price, when a friend of mine recommended Lisa at Profiles to me. The other reviews here are spot-on; a haircut from Lisa is an incredible deal. I am pretty incoherent about describing what I want, but she seemed to understand what I was saying, and she gave me a cut that has grown out really well. I'm also usually really awkward about keeping up conversation with a stylist, but Lisa made me feel very much at ease. Worst Salon in Somerville. I have to agree with Jay N., they don't do the cut you ask for. Alexa (Alexis?) the tall red head was late to start. Seems like this place is terrible at scheduling or doesn't know how to do haircuts in the time they budgeted. I've had better cuts from low budget chain salons. Razor burn on the back of the neck? Last minute appointment and I should have waited to go to my normal places... As one Yelper wrote previously, I encountered the same experiences: water soaked shirt during the hair wash, thinning my hair without asking me, and the lack of interest in conversation. I rode a motorcycle to my appointment and when I left with my shirt soaked, it was miserable (winter day in December!). When the hair dresser started thinning out my hair, I was thinking this could be bad or great. (It's been done in the past.) It was bad...my usual low maintenance hair do no longer exists because the ends are so thinned out, they do this awkward frizz puff. :( Lastly, the hair dresser didn't care to talk to me; she eavesdropped on other conversations and sounded happier to chime in their conversations rather than contribute to one with me. I've been coming here to Lisa for 2 years and she's never led me astray. I usually have a general idea of what style and color I want; but I listen to her suggestions and the results are awesome. My hair has gone from short to long, blond to brunette, and looked fabulous every step of the way under her experienced care. I haven't posted to Yelp in a long time, but I was shocked by some of the recent negative reviews. What's wrong with you people? If you didn't like your cut/color, go back in and let her fix it! No need to make a city council case out of it. If you don't like a convivial atmosphere with banter between customers and stylists, go to a stuffy overpriced salon and pay three times as much for sterile silence. Whenever my friends ask me where I get my hair done, I send them here and they've all come away happy. Maybe because they're not uptight jerks. read more

Lisa ROCKS. Shes makes you feel comfortable during your visit. No awkward silence. Just be prepared. She has a big personality which some people may not like but I love it. Prices are AWESOME. I got a better cut and color than several "high end" salons I've been to on Newbury Street. She knows her stuff. As others have said, she did cut my hair shorter than I wanted. But it does look great. I walked down the street feeling like I was in a vidal sasoon commercial. The only downside is the salon itself is small and not very modern. You can hear EVERY conversation in the salon which can get quite annoying. I am the first to admit that finding a great stylist is 90% luck. I have been walking by this salon for months - it is right around the corner from where I live. Having recently moved, I've been delaying the inevitable haircut for months. I talked myself into the appointment, brought several pictures, talked through exactly what I wanted and felt extremely attended to. I have to say it ended up being a little more pricey than I expected (judging from the pricing on the website) but in the end, you get what you pay for and I don't regret the splurge. I am super happy with my cut and color and would recommend this place to anyone. I've been pouting about my hair for weeks before this cut and looked in the mirror this morning to find I was still happy on day 3 (post wash). See you next time! read more

I just wanted to come back and give an update on my most recent experience with Lumar J Salon. I called the other week and scheduled a hair appointment for a cut and color. On the day of my appointment, a nice, nasty snow storm decided to grace Boston with its presence. Alexis, who was scheduled to do my hair, called me and tried to fit me in earlier. However, the salon ending up closing early, so I had to reschedule for the next day. I am very appreciative that Alexis was able to fit me in the next day, as I had a week of travel ahead and wouldn't have been able to get my hair done at any other time. She did a fantastic job with my hair! She listed to exactly what I wanted, and I have been getting compliments on my color ever since. Again, I want to thank Alexis for her patience and understanding when rescheduling my appointment. She definitely knows what she's doing when it comes to hair! I'll certainly be back to Lumar J Salon - it's convenient and the price is great! read more

The one star is just based on services with Jessica. I don't know if she still works there, but I ended up getting stuck with her after Alexis went on leave and I was unfortunately unable to get appointments with Lisa. Both Lisa and Alexis are great hairdressers. Jessica didn't do a great job. She is a nice person, but not a great hairdresser. She cut my layers way too short and the color never seemed to last. I suffered for a long time with this. Again, I don't know if she is still there but if she is, I suggest going to someone else. Other than that the salon is great and aside from Jessica, I would give it 5 stars. read more

Just moved to Boston and was in desperate need of getting these "natural highlights" covered. I found this salon, read great reviews about Lisa, so I decided to give it a try. I arrived 15 minutes late and Lisa was extremely nice about it. I must have gotten the time mixed up because I would have never been this late. I felt very bad but Lisa was so cool even though she was double booked the rest of the day. Lisa knows about color, cutting, product and is a great people person. She did A wonderful color and cut for me. I'm so glad I chose the right person and salon first and didn't have to live through a bad mullet, purple hair or any of the other disasters that could have happened when choosing a new hair dresser. I went here because of Yelp & Lisa was my hair stylist! My only complaint was that they were running behind about 30 minutes but they are an offering of plenty of magazines to occupy my time. Lisa was amazing! I have a hearing impairment & Lisa has a very clear voice that sure does resonate! She's got plenty of personality & makes the time go by fast. Lisa was able to offer my plenty of suggestions for how she thought my hair was best to be cut & implented some new things in so my hair looked the best it could. When I asked her what hair supplies I should buy, she wasn't a product pusher (maybe not good from a professional selling standpoint but made me trust her), instead she said whe you are finished with your current supplies we'll talk products. Can't say enough good things about Jessica here! My (Asian) hair has been tricky to cut & color in the past but it's never been an issue with Jessica. I made the mistake once of trying another spot because I couldn't get in on the same day - let me highlight: MISTAKE. Really, I should have waited because the following day was an option. Name has changed, but Lisa is still there! My sister recommended Lisa to me about a year ago and I have been really happy with her work. She definitely knows what she is doing when it comes to color and her hair cuts have been great too. The salon is really convenient if you live in the Davis Square area and I find it affordable as well. I just moved to Cambridge and had been looking for a new hairdresser/colorist, but was having trouble finding someone I trusted. But my roots were coming through and I didn't want to wait, so while I was snowed in during a storm a couple of weekends ago, I made the mistake of coloring my hair at home -- I've done it so many times before! It will be fine!! -- but no, it was a complete disaster. In a desperate search for a quick fix, Yelp directed me to LuMar-J, and I decided to take the risk. I could not be happier!! Jessica saved me from my disastrous dye job and completely TRANSFORMED my hair -- she is very knowledgeable about hair (color, cuts, textures, damage), and guided me to a shade that I never would have chosen from the display book, but looks incredible. She listened to my guidance about not cutting off too much, but gave it a gorgeous shape, with perfect swoop bangs and fabulous layers. I have not stopped getting compliments. Even more, for a color, cut, and blowdry, it cost me less than what I could have paid for just a cut at some swanky Newbury Street salon! I have found my new place. read more

I had a wedding to go to last weekend. Not just any wedding. A wedding of a childhood friend, whom I hadn't seen in a long time. Let's go best case scenario: in my dreams I have planned this day seamlessly, and I swoop into Davis square on a bright sunny summer's morning, and find a nearby parking space immediately. I have time to get myself a coffee, and run two important errands before getting beautified. Then I can rush home, change and drive to the wedding and be ON TIME for everything. What was the most unbelievable part of this dream? IT ALL CAME TRUE. I was a little early for my appointment, but I got to peek at the new decor of the salon- enjoy the rest of my coffee from a cushy chair while chatting with Jessica (with whom I had my appointment) and the other ladies who get pretty on Saturday mornings. One thing that drives me nuts about my hair? I can NEVER make it look like I know what I'm doing when I put a flat iron or even at times brush for that matter. This is passable for my day-to-day life, but for a party (one that usually has excessive photos taken) like this? Trust a professional. Jess washed my hair, which I'm a huge fan of (go figure, don't like touching, but LOVE when I get my hair done and somebody else washes my hair...) it's relaxing, and when I get a good wash, I know that I'm in good hands. She blow-dried my hair into an abnormally silky tamed mane. She added curls as well which I'm fond of but have never been successful at doing myself. She took extra care to make my new long/angled bangs [I got elsewhere] look good with the 'do for the day. I walked out feeling fancy enough to take on any wedding - and actually bumped into a friend I hadn't seen in a while and she immediately complemented me on my hair. We were standing a stone's throw from Lumar-J, so I just pointed and told her "Jess did this" she said she would probably check it out. They also have a deal that I noticed after I left (and then checked in on the Yelp App) for 20% off, so if you needed another reason to go... there you have it! read more

5 stars for Lisa!! After moving to Somerville from Boston a few years back I was desperate for a colorist. I found Lisa via Yelp and am so happy I did!! She's taken me from blonde, to brown, to red, from long to short. I've never had so many compliments on my hair until I started seeing Lisa. I would recommend Lisa to everyone, I swear you will end up going to her forever!!! The salon is in a great location, right in Davis easy to get to on the subway or bus, and the metered parking lot across from flatbread is a three second walk from the salon. They take walk in's but, Lisa books up really fast so I definitely suggest calling ahead and making an appointment. LuMar-J is an absolute hidden gem!!!! read more

Lisa was the worst hairdresser I've ever met. I heard great reviews about profiles and about Lisa so I went here but she was very rude about other customers when another customer was talking about her trip to europe. Lisa made comments how she's annoying ...etc. I'm not sure if I completely trust these reviews for Lisa...maybe they are posted by her or her friends. who knows Finally, the haircut. It was horrible and I told her I hated it. She yelled and said it looks great. I told her I want someone else to fix my hair before I pay and leave. She threatened that she will call the cops if I don't pay her immediately. Furthermore, she said if I want someone else at the salon to fix what she has done wrong, I would have to pay both Lisa and the other hair dresser. Worst experience!!!! read more

This is the first negative review I've written and I feel bad doing it, but I've never been to a hairdresser who got something so wrong as Lisa @ Profiles. I brought in a photo of ME with the haircut I wanted - it isn't like it was a photo of a celebrity I was never going to look like. When cut and styled correctly, my hair has wonderful curl to it. When done badly, it is totally and completely straight. I left there with my hair the straightest it has ever been. It was my worst haircut ever. :( read more

This no-frills hair salon is the sort of place you go if you want to actually like chatting it up with your hairdresser and get a great cut or color at the same time. Nice people, great hair styling and excellent prices all around. It helps that my favorite hair dresser (Lisa) moved over here from Creative Expressions in Arlington. So I've jumped ship and become a full-fledged Profiles customer, going three times in the past 10 weeks for highlights, cut and style. Lisa's specialties are color -- she'll do exactly what you ask or offer suggestions to complement your skin tone -- and styling. I don't know what the reviewer below me is talking about! I heart Lisa because she keeps it real! She does listen to what type of style/cut you want, but she understands hair, and she will tell you what will work accordingly to your hair type and face shape. I'm uber protective of my hair, and don't trust just anybody with my hair, but with Lisa.. I trust her completely! When I go there, I just tell her to do her magic, and I'm always happy when I leave the salon. I've been going to her for more than little over a year now. As a bonus, I love her "tell it like it is" personality. So for those who gave Lisa a bad review, it's probably because you treated her like a dog, and Lisa won't deal with that BS. Lisa is one of the few people in Boston that makes me feel at home (I'm from Chicago), and doesn't carry that esoteric vibe that I have to deal with on a daily basis in Boston. I really liked Lisa, my stylist. She was awesome and super understanding since I brought a baby with me. All the staff was sweet. My complaint is just the hair color was a bit more red than I wanted and then the dark brunette part washed out but the red stayed. That may just be a color thing, but they did a good job overall. read more

I recently booked an appt with Lisa on a whim, after meeting someone with a great cut and color that is a client of Lisa. It was definitely the work of a talented stylist! I brought some pictures, briefly explained what I was looking to do with my hair, and I didn't have to elaborate too much. Lisa figured out what I wanted quickly and nailed it. When I did my hair myself the next day, satisfaction was confirmed: My hair was easy to style the way I like it. I am the type to snip away at my hair, even after a haircut, to fix anything that doesn't seem right. I haven't been tempted to do that one bit. I loved the down to earth, non-stuffy atmosphere, and Lisa's personality a lot! I look forward to going back. (So inexpensive, too!! Extra tip well deserved!) read more

Totally agree with all of the positive Lisa reviews! Don't have too much to add, grace l.'s review was essentially what I was going to write. I think like, 6 of my friends go to her now. I've been going to Lisa for a couple of years, and this last time finally decided to chop off some of my hair and was super nervous. I brought in some pictures that I liked, and Lisa gave me exactly they style that I wanted and it looks so good and is so easy to style (she knows how much I hate blow drying and always keeps that in mind with my cuts). throw in the fact that it is way cheaper than most fancy pants salons, is super convenient to get to (unless you're driving and don't have a somerville sticker, I guess that's a pain), and always has the best trashy magazines to read while you're waiting and it is definitely a 5 star experience. read more
