Glad they have this available. Unsure of parking but Uber dropped me at the front door. Small size with valuable exhibits, videos, and information. Friendly staff with onsite security. Not a major gift shop but offers shirts, books, postcards, just enough to take a memory with you. Definitely go to learn more on the history and support. It is free of charge.

Definitely a must see place. Easy to find and my uber dropped me off on the other side of the street. Interior was well staged, all the staff were friendly, and the place was well lit and accessible. I did buy a shirt and few post cards. The items were affordable. I was there for he Mumia event. The speakers were great and Mumia got on the phone to chat with us. It was really inspiring. I want to come back when I'm in town.

Anything black and for the people I am in full support. It's a shame that the City of Oakland and its leaders did not share the same interest. The FBI wanted to destroy the panther party so they took down its key leaders one by one. What they're known for: The Panthers initially formed to monitor police behavior in Black neighborhoods and assert the right to armed self-defense against police brutality. They created survival programs including free breakfast for children, health clinics, education programs, and senior services that served thousands in their communities. Different perspectives: Supporters view them as a necessary response to systemic racism, police violence, and poverty in the 1960s. They see the Panthers as community advocates who provided vital services while challenging an unjust system. They point to FBI documents showing the organization was deliberately undermined through COINTELPRO operations. Critics, including law enforcement at the time, viewed them as a violent threat to public order. They point to armed confrontations with police, inflammatory rhetoric, and criminal activities by some members. The FBI under J. Edgar Hoover considered them a major threat to national security. The reality: The organization included people with genuine commitment to social justice alongside others who engaged in violence and criminal activity. Internal conflicts, government suppression, and the complexities of revolutionary politics led to the group's decline by the early 1980s. Their legacy remains debated today, but their community programs influenced modern mutual aid movements, and they drew attention to issues of police accountability that remain relevant. Understanding them requires grappling with the context of systemic racism, state surveillance, and the tensions within social movements.

When in Oakland, do visit. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking mainly Experience: It's in the downtown area of Oakland so it's a pretty busy area with good local commercial businesses and not too far away from other areas such as Jack London or Lake Merritt. The space is small but pretty powerful with knowledge and art. It's pretty engaging with the visuals to the audio tour. TL;DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Not a perfect five because it needs to be bigger! Great staff, good knowledge, and visuals. I appreciate their work and efforts of taking care of their community and challenging the system in efforts to receive basic needs. Definitely a great place to stop by, you don't need an entire day just a good hour or so. Much love to the organizers of this space! Power to the people! Tips: * Check their websites for events.

I did not go inside and hadn't realized it was there. Fascinated by the art and that the museum even exists, I snapped some pictures really quick with plans to come back another day. Very interested in the history of it.

Such a phenomenal experience. I stopped by to explore the museum with our family. I loved learning more about the Black Panther Party community school and I loved how interactive the museum was. I really wished we could have stayed for the 50th anniversary celebration program. We will definitely be back! Make sure you stop by to support, learn, connect and get some Merch ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE

The museum itself is small but powerful. I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and it was packed--rightfully so. Some of the contributions blew my mind--things I had never even realized they were responsible for. I won't spoil the details (because you need to see it for yourself), but trust me, this is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates Black history, resistance, and the ongoing fight for justice. The museum is modern, well-curated, and free, making it accessible to everyone. You don't need a full day--an hour to an hour and a half is perfect--but I'd suggest making an afternoon of it. Grab a coffee next door & support the local businesses in the area. Oakland needed this, and now that it's here, let's make sure it thrives. Go see it. Bring a friend. Keep the legacy alive!

Awesome and essential history!! Every black child living in the Bay Area should visit. Learned about the party, its founding, and the movement. Also learned about the Oakland Community School established by the party in 1973, based upon the 5th point of the party's 10-point platform.

This was an uplifting experience. The museum highlighted members of the BPP organization, their most fond memories and where are they now. The history of the Oakland Community School was very informative. This is Salk space packed with a lot of valuable information. You can also purchase books, shirts and other merchandise.

I ended up finally booking the garden for a large party this month and was impressed by the experience from start to finish. It's hard to believe that it's entirely volunteer-led! Everyone I met was clearly knowledgeable and passionate about the house, its history, and its preservation. Making a reservation was easy and the coordinators were kind and courteous during the whole process. The day-of place settings were beautiful and the food was some of the best I've had for tea in addition to being generous and variable in servings. There were even some kid-friendly items (including some non-caffeinated beverages) as I had a few young guests in attendance. The tour we had following our tea service was detailed and informative without being boring. The house itself is incredibly preserved and in immaculate condition. It was great learning about the history of the Pardee family and their influence in the Bay Area, California, and beyond. There were some interactive parts too including getting to touch some antique items and listen to some hand-cranked music players. I will undoubtedly be back sometime and highly encourage anyone who likes good food and vibes or learning about local history to book a visit themselves. If you have people from out-of-town visiting, the Pardee Home is an excellent first choice for doing something low-key and private but still touristy.

But I do not. Instead - I usually end up uncomfortably lugging around said bags everywhere with me. I like to have my things on me in case I need them. Friends, loved ones, and family members usually end up watching me struggle with my cumbersome (often unnecessary) luggage. Shaking their heads at my heavy bags, and my unwillingness to put them down. The SFMOMA is such an inspiring and well curated museum of diverse art that I for once (in a very very long time) - decided to finally check my bags. My dad was surprised as I walked over to the kind staff member behind the counter and voluntarily checked my many bags. I knew that to fully enjoy such a phenomenal museum like the SFMOMA - that I needed to be fully present - and free to roam the beautifully curated space with ease. SFMOMA will do that to you. It makes you want to let go and immerse yourself in its inspiring and profound art. If you live in SF and haven't yet been to the SFMOMA in awhile or ever - remedy that quickly. Make sure you set aside a good chunk of time to explore this special art museum. I'd recommend going solo - or with a friend and/or loved one - who is able to take their time with you. The SFMOMA is too special of an art space to move through quickly. There are too many legendary pieces here to rush through. If you're able to - I'd recommend going during the week - on a cloudy or rainy day - when you're not tempted by SF's glorious sunshine and when the museum isn't busy. I came here with my dad a number of weeks ago on a rainy day - when he was visiting from overseas. It was one of the highlights of his brief visit - for both of us. We both were stirred by the impressive collection of iconic art that graced the walls of this captivating space. We were particularly awed by The Fisher collection of art - https://www.sfmoma.org/artists-artworks/fisher-collection - beautifully displayed throughout SFMOMA. If you're not familiar with Doris and Donald Fisher (the co-founders of Gap) - I recommend reading up about them and their world acclaimed collection of contemporary art. Doris Fisher - actually passed away this year on May 2nd, a week after our visit to the SFMOMA. It struck me - when reading about Doris Fisher's legacy - that her and her husband Donald (who passed in 2009) will forever be remembered through and for their acute eye for profound art. Art that pushed boundaries and made people think. If you're in SF and or visiting SF - and looking to infuse your life with more creativity and inspiration - go to SFMOMA. Check your bags - and indulge in some what's up art. Be sure to also save time to visit the SFMOMA Gift store. There are so many magical finds inside, which make for thoughtful unique gifts for both yourself and loved ones. Take time for yourself and art. It's important. Trust.

If you're expecting an immersive, interactive experience where you'll feel like you won't have…read moreenough time to do everything, then you'll be sorely, sorely, sorely disappointed. The first problem is that it's called a museum--I know, where else do you keep T-rex fossil casts other than a museum? you've got me there, but I want to let you hopes down so that you'll have a properly amazing experience here. The first thing to know is that it's housed in the Valley Life Sciences Building, or VLSB for those of us in the know who use University of California campus building-name acronyms on the regular. It's a living, breathing, working building on campus, which means there are offices and a library, in addition to "museums," which again is a disappointing misnomer. When it was built in 1930, not only was it the largest building in the City of Berkeley, but it was also the largest concrete building in the US west of the Mississippi. It's still the largest building on campus, I believe. When I worked on campus, my classes were often (and my office hours were always) in Wheeler Hall, whose bathrooms leave a lot to desired, to understate quite ridiculously. So I was always on the lookout for better, less traveled bathroom options. Not just near Wheeler, but everywhere on campus and especially between Wheeler and the western edge of campus, because I often worked part time at my current job while also working as a reader at UC, so I was always walking back and forth between campus and our office in Downtown Berkeley. Anyway, I thought i had found a perfect candidate in a particular men's room on a particular side of a particular floor of VLSB. Who would enter this random, imposing building looking for a restroom, and even if they did, who would go anywhere but the bathrooms on the first floor. Happy with myself, after my second visit to the secret bathroom, I was about halfway back to my office when I realized I didn't have my wallet. I remembered taking it out of my pocket in the stall, so I rushed back up there. And what did I find? My wallet was sitting there on the toilet-paper dispenser, my ID, debit card, and credit cards still there. Whew! But I was also aghast, because the $36 in cash was missing. I'm still conflicted to this day--replacing my license and credit cards would have been a huge pain, and if someone had returned my wallet to me, I probably would have rewarded him with at least $20. So should I be angry for this person for stealing from me but not making it as bad as it could have been? I don't really know, and I haven't been back to that benighted bathroom since. So here's the best way to experience the Museum of Paleontology: By total surprise. The first time I came in here, I had no idea I'd find these Pteranodons floating around or this Tyrannosaurus rex hanging out near the staircase. Yes, take the elevator to the fourth floor and then take the stairs down. You'll be so wowed. It's amazing. And that's how you have a four-star experience. Just don't give kind thieves the opportunity to steal some of your valuables.

Some of my classmates/department peers were into dinosaur bones, so I got to explore the Museum of Paleontology (on-campus) with geochemist(s) as my guide. Since none of us were actively studying fossils/vertebrates, we all got to spitball our guesses. It was our idea of a wild time. I might have brought up the dinosaur bones as something to see when my sister visited me, however, she was not very interested. She majored in anthropology as an undergraduate at the University of Washington and did not share my zest for things existing millions of years before us. While I was unsuccessful on that occasion, I did later use space by the entrance/exit for work if my office in McCone Hall got too loud.
