This review is long overdue and I Hope Mike forgives me for my tardiness. I found Mike and his team on Yelp and was thrilled by his reviews. He came to the house and gave me a Great military discount. We discussed the work in phases and he even recommended some areas that did not require painting to reduce costs. His vision for my home was amazing and he was professional and very passionate about his work. His crew was dependable and on time and experts at their craft. Mike completed the staining of my fence, touch ups to my door and created the beautiful accent walls you see in the ceilings and back walls. He also was responsible for any crown molding you see. The builder painted the entire home a sort of sand and Mike helped me to Create the Bold look I was going for. I have posted the pictures of my home on Facebook and the reviews from my friends confirm that contracting Mike for this job was the smartest decision I could have made. I used sticker-brand decals to accent the walls and Bedroom and I believe they came out nicely on top of what Mike completed. I wish I could give even more stars! My large deck was in need of some repairs, cleaning and re-staining. The last time I had it done was only 7 months ago (pressure washed and stained by a different company). The stain was in very poor shape, with lots of flaking, and even some rotted spots of wood. I also had drywall inside my home that was in need of patching. I started the process by asking 4 companies to come give me estimates. Only two companies provided me with estimates as promised- and Black Pearl was the only one who measured and figured the estimate on the spot. Black Pearl was also the only company that could handle both projects for me. His estimate was very reasonable, and his plan for the project timing was honest and reliable. Once I committed to his plan, he kept me informed of the anticipated start date (due to weather), and he texted daily with the project status. He and his team were always where they said they would be, on time, and fast working. Mr. Dougherty was even patient in the color picking process- making me several samples to get a better idea of how the colors would look on such a large area. I am BEYOND satisfied with the work of Black Pearl, LLC. I would highly recommend them for any job you might need done! I contacted the painters through Houzz site. Mike called me - I could not take the call since I was in meetings and wasn't comfortable giving my address out until we had spoken. Just based on that he unleashed a barrage of abusive language on me and called me a "f***!! Terrorist" - I think based on my name. Isn't that racist? Black pearl has done it again ! This is the second time I have used this company. The first time I had my whole house painted before I moved in ,Mike was quick and efficient in his work. My husband and I were so happy that we hired them to paint our kitchen and bathroom cabinets. He has transformed out dated 90s home into a neutral contemporary space. After reading several stellar online reviews for Black Pearl Custom Painting, I reached out to Mike for a staining estimate for my new deck. The deck was still under construction but far enough along that Mike was able to give me a quote, which was reasonable and within our budget. Anticipating the deck would be completed shortly, we agreed on a timeframe for staining. Unfortunately, there were several delays caused by the deck company, and I had to push back the staining timeline several times. Mike was wonderful throughout the whole process, reassuring me that he would do everything he could to work around my delays. Near the end of the deck construction, I had a personal deadline that was nearing (family visiting from out of town) but Mike still assured me he and his team would be able to complete the job. On the last day of deck construction, as the deck crew was packing up to leave, Mike and his crew showed up and started prepping. Aside from being incredibly flexible and extremely professional, Mike and his crew were amazingly efficient. I had expected the job to take two to three days but they were able to sand and stain my 400 sq ft deck and arbor in one day. The results are simply amazing...they transformed a plain deck into a thing of beauty. One of my main concerns going in was how they would work around my recessed hot tub and how careful they would be not to get excess stain on the house, concrete, hot tub, etc. I now realize I had no reason for concern. They protected my house and hot tub perfectly, just like Mike assured me they would. Throughout the entire process, Mike delivered as promised. He and his crew, in fact, far exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately we've had a terrible experience with the quality of work done on our kitchen cabinets by Mike. I'm five months pregnant and we have a 15 month old daughter so as you can imagine this has been very difficult on our family, hence why we wanted to hire someone to help us with updating our kitchen cabinets to begin with. Showing up late every day on the job, ruining our cabinets, wasting paint, and then excusing yourself from the job because "you don't need the money" is unacceptable. I understand that you're not familiar with the kind of paint we chose (Benjamin Moore Advance) but that has nothing to do with the fact that many steps were eliminated or done poorly. The technique and quality of the work are so bad that we had to take it all off. I didn't realize that negotiating the price also meant compromising the quality. It has taken us a week to scrape off the poor and unfinished paint job, our kitchen and living area are completely covered in white paint dust making it extremely difficult and stressful to live in. Many steps to proper cabinet refinishing were skipped or cut short resulting in paint dragging, paint splatter on the walls, floor, and granite, and just a messy and ugly paint job. It has cost us more time, effort, exhaustion, and money to clean up the mess left behind by black pearl custom painting. I attached pictures (on Google Maps review) because they show how badly the quality of work we received. We thought having the owner of the company do the work himself, we would be getting the best, but that's not the case at all. We've learned our lesson and wouldn't hire Mike ever again. Let's be clear, the result of this bad paint job has nothing to do with the high end product we provided. This has everything to do with lack of pride in work, skipping crucial steps to the process, and technique. We haven't hired anyone else because it would cost more for someone else to come in and scrape off/clean up the mess. All pictures provided are taken throughout the process of us sanding off the bad job done to our cabinets, the closer we looked the more we realized that we have to start over. Rented from him in Az and he stole half of my deposit. $600. Was there over 4 years and always paid on time and did many improvements while there. REFUSED TO COME WALK AND SENT NEIGHBOR. Neighbor loved it so clean and ready for immediate rental... After we relocated to Texas he sent notice he was keeping half of our deposit. After moving expenses and new rental we did not have the money to go back to Az to fight it. Don't use him. Look at other reviews, he is rude and nasty to deal with. He tried to accuse hubby of cheating him out of money when he offered to change out sink faucet and deduct from rent... HOUSE LOOKED BETTER THEN WHEN WE MOVED IN. Don't trust him. read more

0 star actually! I am a General Contractor looking for a painter, I called in and got the worse customer service you've ever imagine! Swearing on the phone!! Really?? I deal with a lot of customers everyday and never treat my customers like that. I don't even know how they get 4.8 stars! We just moved into our house and wanted the master bedroom and bath painted before our new bedroom furniture is delivered. Mike was able to come give me an estimate and have someone out to paint in the short time frame I gave him. He reviewed colors with me and made sure to check in again before ordering paint. He took extra time to walk through to give me an idea on what future projects will cost when we are ready. On painting day, he came out with his painter in the morning to make sure instructions were clear. We had a contrasting accent wall and archway and a lighter shade in the bathroom. Need help finishing my two story foyer job is literally 2/3 finished and before coming over to quote he asked our budget no I'm not paying $600 for you to finish three feet of wall... he was rude, kept cutting myself and husband off. If you have a big job and have money to spend he's probably your guy but If it's probably 500 dollar job or less I wouldn't recommend "it's not worth his time" thanks for helping your community and troops. Requested a quote through Yelp (after hours) and Mike got in touch with me right away. Explained that we had a short-notice project and he came by the very next day for a full estimate. After I agreed, Mike's crew were out the very next day to clean and prep my home for exterior paint on the trim. The project was done in less than a day and a half. His staff were polite and helpful. Mike was there to assist and oversee the entire project. I am thankful to Yelp who helped me find Mike and his great crew. Mike came out to our house after my work hours in response to my call for a paint/stain job for a large exterior arbor. He inspected the site offered some opinions based upon my requirements and was prompt to provide an emailed professional bid for service. The price was reasonable and after my acceptance he provided me a schedule for the work. Unfortunately (fortunately for San Antonio) we had some rain, Mike was very prompt to adjust and provide me an updated timeline. The job was completed and surpassed my expectations. Prior to final inspection I had a door knob incident with an interior wall. I asked Mike for some advice and he just fixed it as well, he even gave the family a painting lesson :) Overall my experience with Black Pearl Custom Painting is A+. Mike was courteous, professional, reasonably priced, and actually an interesting fello. I set up an appointment with them and made arrangements to place my dogs at day care... then contractor calls to tell me he's on his way and then shortly after TEXTS me that he can't do the job because my dogs will scratch it. I don't understand why he doesn't have the professional courtesy to call someone and explain and just send a text. We had rescheduled our weekend to accommodate the company to do the work at our home. This is unprofessional and how can you say my dogs will scratch it? Since then I spoke to a couple of concrete stain contractors that are coming to give us quotes and all have said pets are not a problem. He knew we had dogs since he beginning so he shouldn't have gone along and made an appointment with me and made me take my dogs to day care if he didn't think he would be able to do it. UPDATE: he replied that he will pray for me? Okay I am saved but thanks. They actually opened our door to find someone who will do what they say. And others reassured that if you do a good job the stain cannot be "damaged by dogs" and that if it does they will come and fix it... for free!! When they said they were on your way I took dogs to day care AND lost out on money for cancelling for tomorrow and Saturday. We were leaving to Austin but canceled to make sure we were here for project. The text he wrote said that he didn't know how our condition of patio area but it is brand new and he had seen it before. There was only a paint stain which he saw and still agreed to come. Waste of time. It's just unprofessional to TEXT a client cancelling saying it's because of dogs and thanks when you agreed to something and said you were on your way. Being professional means making a polite call/leaving voicemail. If you want someone who can stain floor correctly resistant to dog scratches do research because this company says they don't have "solutions" that they feel comfortable applying that are resistant to dogs and I found three other places that say that is not likely to happen. And now that I see other reviews for black pearl job looks pretty bad. read more

I used this company to stain a new fence in my yard. Let me just say I will always use them in the future. They were great!

Requested a quote and within 2 hours Mike (the owner) was at my door and gave me a reasonable quote to stain my new deck cover and trim. He explained all they would do and the precautions they would take to protect my property as well as my neighbors. His crew showed up that afternoon and prepared the surface for the ensuing staining. Even with a packed schedule Mike was able to get a crew to stain the deck in two days. As promised the crew prepped the area and completed the task in about 4 hours but took care not to get the stain on any of the composite material. They had to cut in several areas including all the metal poles of the handrail. His crew did a fantastic job and Mike even commented that when the deck installers came back to shave off the gate they installed that he would come back out and re-stain the surface again. I have a few jobs in mind for Black Pearl and look forward to working with them again. read more

This review is long overdue (I've reviewed this company several times on Angie's list but wasn't a big Yelp user until now). We have used Black Pearl numerous times over the past several years for deck and fence staining and painting different rooms in our home. Mike is extremely personable and gets back to you quickly whenever you need a quote or have a question. We have been very happy with all the services that he has provided, he has a great team and they always leave the area cleaner than when they arrived. His prices are great and they do the job in a timely fashion. We recently needed our fence repaired and Mike came out promptly and gave me a quote, I accepted and he told me he would be out the next day. (Mike also remembered from over a year ago that my Mum had been sick and one of the first things he did was ask me about her). Mike came out and repaired the fence and wouldn't accept payment, this was above and beyond what he needed to do and we are immensely appreciative of this kindness at a difficult time in our lives. Called today and tried to set up and appointment for an estimate to get a deck as well as a patio stained. Talk about the rudest people EVER!!!!!!!!! I explained that myself and my husband work Monday through Friday to which the response was "we don't work saturdays!". I was asked if I could go into work late since people take time off to go to the doctor all the time (I don't btw.) and if I couldn't do that, then I would have to set up something next week. However, before I could even suggest ANY date that I would be available (since I did not ask anybody to show up tomorrow or that I needed it done now), I was told that if I couldn't fine the time, maybe I just need to call somebody else. Sorry I ever made that call. Since it's monday, I'm writing it off to whoever answered the phone is having a very bad day!!!! But rest assured, all my friends, family, co-workers and whoever else is in need of staining or painting services will NOT get any recommendation from me. read more
