I had a flat white---my most recent fixation---and it was beautifully made (see pic). I grabbed just the right amount of buzz. Espresso Room uses Squaremile coffee, a brand I wasn't familiar with, but will look for now when I'm out and about. The baked goods are from Sally Clarke. I guess her stuff's supposed to be a big deal. Size-wise, I was skeptical as the lemon poppy muffin looked a bit dinky, but it did pack quite the tasty punch with real bits of lemon. Cake-y muffins give me the irrits, but Sally's was a good balance of "I'm having a treat, but pretending it's healthy." Service was friendly and the owner seems really chuffed to be in the 'hood and providing quality product. It's across from Great Ormond Children's Hospital. Honestly, that whole block usually gives me the creeps (I know, the wee ones are sick, have some empathy), so Espresso Room gives me a reason to screw up my courage and go for the caffeine fix. Outside there are a couple of lightwood benches for your eat-in order and inside a few spots to have a seat, if you'd like to drink out of a nice mug. But, again, I think this might become my regular spot for when I want a treat on the move.

I did feel bad that he'd be put in the situation though, as he had too much work to do which isn't good for the customers or him. I ordered my usual Venti Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte, which came to £4.60, again I always find this to be a little pricey, with Starbucks increasing the price year on year since 2019. My regular coffee (about 3 a day on last tally) is an espresso, and i still believe that the italians can teach the worlds best hipster barista a thing or 2 about espresso (cappuccino, latté etc...) and the problem I've always had with these new-wave hipster cafs is that while they can often churn out lovely frothy milkshake-esque coffees, their espressos are disgusting, salty, up dosed/underextracted. None of that here. Nice, sharp and robust but smooth...and no saltiness.

The hype, in my opinion, is still a bit overdone, but I have to say, the coffee has only gotten better over time, and it's not the worst place for people-watching if you manage to snag a seat. Their espresso is now perfectly balanced and blends well with your choice of cow, oat, or nut juice. Their pastry selection has also expanded, and now carries a modest artisanal spread, from Pistachio Financiers to sugar-coated brioche. Croissants also abound, and in the colder months, they carry Italian Panetone, which soaks up that coffee brilliantly. The space is still small, and during the busier hours, your only probable choice will be to stand at one of the back counters with your tiny spread. They still don't offer take-away cups, unless you're willing to shell out £5 for one of their reusable cups. The bright side: You get those £5 back if you return the cup. Being one of London's finer purveyors of coffee, they also sell pricey beans with a little something for every coffee lover to take home with them.
