I'm over 40 and was looking for a place where I could train often, push myself, and still stay safe. Black Sheep Jiu Jitsu has been exactly that. The teaching is super high level, but the vibe on the mat is welcoming and safe enough that I'm able to roll 6-7 days a week. There are tons of black belts and brown belts here--Levon, Derek, Alex, Evan--who make every round tough but also take the time to help you get better while you roll. Coach Wolf is amazing with both technique and rolling, and Cole is awesome with the no-gi classes. been training here for almost a year and my review would be five stars if not for the insane hygiene issues. PLEASE for the health and safety of your students disinfect the mats between each class. Or at the very least east wipe them down so they're not drenched in others sweat when people step on... Staph infections, MRSA, and ringworm are very real things. read more

I am an older grappler (the oldest woman at Black Sheep by at least 10 years and in most cases 20 years) and I love training here. I just trained at Black Sheep, and I have injuries to my elbow, neck and shoulder that are going to take weeks to heal. I am an older grappler, and I have trained at dozens of places all over the world. Some gyms have a nice, mellow vibe, others seem to think that every roll is the Thunderdome with kill or be killed. Black Sheep is the latter, starting with the instructor, who was unnecessarily aggressive to a purely defensive older grappler. I told everybody in the gym that I am an older guy, take it easy, I am just trying to get some exercise, but they seemed to think this meant they should go even harder. People were friendly enough, but this is a gym that needs a serious change of culture, starting from the top. Stay away from this gym until the culture changes. read more

The best Jiu-Jitsu tech in the North Bay! Plus no slimy business practices. This is the real deal!

A smallish BJJ school, tucked away next to the Post Office parking lot. The students were welcoming and friendly, as were the two co owners. An almost equal mix of young talented female, and male ninjas. The instruction was great, followed by some rolling time. There were no egos on the mats. Drop in fee is $25, I'm used to paying $0 to $20, but it's Marin county. If you want to drop in multiple days, it's pricey. Coming from a medical back ground, what caught my eye however, were heaps of gi's (not sure if they were clean or dirty, but I assume they're all loaner gi's) thrown on the mats in a corner, and about 30 or so various belts and gi's hanging on the rack above the mats. There is a single toilet, steps away from the mats, and a small changing stall. This didn't make me confident about the cleanliness of the mat space as I saw people tip towing off the mats, and changing in the toilet. It's so easy to get MRSA (staph), and ringworm, on the mats which are not mopped with disinfectant between classes, and not washing and properly storing loaner gi's and belts. This is easily correctable though. If you're in San Francisco area looking for a nice BJJ gym, and a beautiful scenic drive from Stinson Beach, look them up. read more

It is a small gym and has a very "underground" vibe but this place has a soul and most people who join never leave. The instructors here are world class and they break down this complicated martial art into something the average person can understand. Everyone is very chill and friendly and somehow they manage to make this full contact sport completely non intimidating. I have been a member for about 4 years and I have seen this place change lives. I have seen people loose weight, gain muscle, gain confidence, gain skills, and gain friends. If you have been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiujitsu, start here. You will get wrapped up like a pretzel, but everyone training and teaching, will be courteous while it is happening. The instructors ensure that the classes are geared toward the class' skill level with additional personal and detailed instruction. Classes are usually built on the foundation of advancing of core techniques. You get the what? when? why? how? of positions, transitions and finishes.
