Pub style atmosphere at the corner of Airport and Lamar. It's close by Bamboo House and Vigilante. Staff is really nice and friendly. We came on a Tuesday night and it wasn't busy which is nice. Tuesday nights they have a special two for $22 for their burgers. They had a double smash burger today and it was amazing. The patties were crispy on the outside and they had a nice charred flavor. The fries however, tasted over done so not that enjoyable. Hopefully they can improve them. read more

It really pains me to write this review. Particularly because we are both initial coop members and especially because of the large investment we made during the initial opening of the coop. But, we feel this is necessary and maybe critique coming from a member/investor gets a little attention. We stopped in recently and sat at the bar. Not a busy night and the bartenders were never very busy. Our first beer order went well and we opened a tab and sat about 2' from where the bartenders serve. After that beer we pushed our empty glasses to the front of the bar hoping the bartender would notice empty glasses. He did not. After about 10 minutes I just got up from my chair and stood in a line of 1 to order, thinking the bartender might recognize this gesture. He did not. During our 2nd beer, after perusing a menu for some time, we flagged down the bartender to order a burger split, jalapenos and garlic fries. When our second beer was done, again, we pushed our glasses to the front. After about 5 minutes or so the bartender, passing by, grabbed our empty glasses and kept going not asking if we wanted another beer. So, after a few minutes, I again get up and get in a line of 1 to order my beer. This time the bartender does put the 2nd fill in front of my partner. About this time we see a burger sitting in the kitchen window but don't think it's ours because there are no fries with it. A few minutes later another burger with fries appears and it sits there and sits there while the bartenders are doing, well I'm not sure. After about 5 minutes this guy from a table behind us comes to the bar and stands at the bar just glaring at that burger and fries, for at least 3-4 minutes. We were wondering what's going on but finally, after about 5 minutes or so the kitchen person noticed him and came out of the kitchen to ask him if he ordered a burger and fries and he then gave it to him. Finally a few minutes later a bartender noticed the lone burger and looked at the ticket and called my name. So our burger was up there at least 10 minutes with no attention from anyone. We were already pretty frustrated so I didn't even complain that there were no fries on the order nor jalapenos. We wolfed down the burger, took our last swallow and I asked to be closed out. This was unacceptable. The place was not busy such that we had to get up and get into "line" to get additional beers. Our burger, incorrectly ordered, didn't have to sit on a counter for 10 minutes when the bartenders were either not visible some of the time or not watching the window. We've seen many changes over the years, some good and some not so good. The new mandatory 20% living wage added on to each tab is not a favorite of many reviews we've seen. We, as many people, still perceive it as a 20% tip, no matter what you call it. Don't like the way it's presented and we didn't like the service at all this time. Staffing has appeared to be more 'transitional' over the years and it's not consistent. We will very likely not come back to what we used to refer as our "beloved" coop. Black Star, you need to do better. read more

Stopped in here on a Tuesday evening with friends after having not been here for a couple of years. If you haven't been here, parking can be a little tricky, because you have to enter at Saint Johns and Lamar. The menu pictured below is fairly simple. We decided on the fish and chips and burger. Basically, the food was pretty good, but it seemed a little bit over priced. I was glad to see they give you a helping of malt vinegar for the fish, however, they don't give you tartar sauce, instead it is garlic mayonnaise. Also, make sure you ask for mayonnaise and mustard if you order the burger because it does not come with it. Their house beers are solid and well-made. You will be surprised to know that there is no tipping allowed at this establishment. It's a place I would certainly return to sooner than later. read more

Nice location. They have a patio area which is nice and a stage inside for live music. They have food options, we got fries and they weren't my favorite. I wouldn't order them again. The beer options for the flight, I felt were limited to my likings. The dark beer which was a stout, didn't taste like one to me. It was a lighter stout. The pilsner's and ales were fine. Came here with some friends on a Friday night and it really wasn't that busy. Bar vibes that also serve food. There's board games and such that you can bring to your table to play with your friends. Thought the food menu was just okay. Nothing really great that was popping out at me. The original dish i wanted to order apparently they were out of some of the ingredients which made me have to decide again what I wanted (the menu wasn't great selections). My pasta dish I was a bit disappointed in it- for it being advertised as a butternut pasta dish i expected there to be far more butternut squash in it than there was. My friend is a huge beer drinker and allowed the cashier to pick one of the beers for her flight, which she wasn't a fan of at all. The same friend also used to come here often a few years back in college and felt the place has gone down a bit overall. Man....I just feel the need to let the owners know how rude and off putting their staff is- mainly the front cashiers or brewtenders or whatever the official name is of the people who take your order. I live within walking distance and every single time I go in I am met with rudeness. The staff seems miserable to be working, or don't want to service people even though that's the job they signed up for. I'm there to spend money- wouldn't your business like money? One time I came in 1 hour before closing because I live close by and thought I could go for a beer. I approached the register to order a beer and the girl goes "phew, you made it just in time" (with like an annoyed tone and expression) and I was like ".....just in time for what?" And she said "we close in an hour." Um.....okay?.....so.... I felt like I should just leave. I came in for a beer and it would have taken me maybe 20 mins to drink it. Why make your patrons feel like we shouldn't come in because it's an HOUR before close? Bottom line for the owners: check your staff. Pups have to stay outdoors, but you're allowed to bring them indoors to place your order. They have tons of beer options, great in-house brews. I was floored by their options! It looked good--I think it was some sort of tofu (veg) tacos, but I wanted fries...so went with their avocado club. It was a bit heavy on the mayo, but it tasted great. Their chips...crisps...fries whatever you want to call em were the REAL WINNER. Y'all. Fries are so crispy and uneven...wedge-style. BUT not dry or lukewarm. They are delicious. I would go back just for their addictive fries. Trust me. They also offer the impossible burger too for veg folks, and other options like grilled cheese. I just love how veg-friendly they are. Foodwise, the only things I've liked are the chicken snack, and the seasoned chips. The burger is just okay, but the fish for the fish and chips needs salt and let's get some dang tarter sauce. They serve it with an aoli, which lacks seasoning. A side of coleslaw would go a long way too. Their beer selection is great, with a wide variety of beer made in house and other local breweries. The food selection leaves a little bit to be desired. The season chips were delicious, they reminded me more of steak fries if you put them in a broiler to give them a nice crunch. Besides the chips nothing on the menu really stood out to me as too interesting, and most of the reviews I read were pretty disappointed with their other food. I've always seen this place and been curious to try it. So, when my friend was visiting from Vermont, I decided it was the perfect time! I always like to eat locally. We split the tofu tikka masala and buffalo cauliflower (we added bleu cheese). I'm sure I could've eaten the whole bowl of of buffalo cauliflower by myself. It was super tasty. The sauce was just a little bit vinegary and the cauliflower soaked up all the flavor. Get it with the cheese, if you aren't vegan. It gives it that extra sharpness. The tikka masala was a bit spicy. I was surprised by that. We both liked it. The tofu was perfect with it. You have to know how to do tofu just right, and this was it! Everything was gluten free, for my friend. We were craving fish and chips. I called at 6 pm. I only had one concern after reading the reviews. I hoped they now served tarter sauce and vinegar instead of Aioli or sour cream. Increased their food menu prices with the Spring '24 menu which is a bummer since I'm usually just here to eat. Sandwiches and burgers used to be around $13-15 and included fries. Now they are $15-18 and fries are an extra $3. $20 for a casual bar sandwich and fries is high, but I guess most things are these days. It's understandable but can't really justify it for myself. Maybe they want to focus less on the food, though. Drink prices are reasonable and I like the laidback neighborhood ambiance. read more

There's plenty of space here to sit outside and it can't be be on a beautiful day. There's a great selection of beers and now you can even take some home in a sixpack. The menu seems to change now and again but I've never had anything I didn't like. It's hard to beat a basket of fries or the buffalo cauliflower. I've always enjoyed the fish and chips and veggie burgers. The staff has always been friendly and helpful with suggestions. Anytime I brought a friend we've always had a good time.
