Was in town while on an Oregon road trip and on any good road trip you find the best local bookshop, Black Sun did not disappoint. It's a little packed full but that's part of it's charm. Enjoyed the cool music they had playing as we perused new and used books which filled every inch of this small-ish shop. They had every subject imaginable and many of the titles are facing outwards to give you a bit of a recommendation as you journey through the store in hopes finding the perfect book, or two, or ten. We got something new (popular bestseller) and something used (of the underground variety). Regardless of your preferred genre you will find something here to scratch your bibliophile itch. They also have a parking lot which makes getting in and out of the store easy and hassle free. Cant wait to come back the next time we're in town! read more

I am traveling from out of state. I just happened by the bookstore. While I was waiting for it to open I grabbed a cappuccino from the store next door (it was amazing). Standing out front sipping my coffee, I was soon greeted by the very friendly owner. We chatted a bit and I looked around. I have been to a lot of bookstores and even owned one for a few years. This store is fantastic! It's loaded with great selections and he'll order whatever you are looking for. I highly recommend spending some time here!! read more

A great small business with an excellent selection of reasonably priced new and used books. Mind, they're tucked into a small space but have packed a great variety of books into their shop. I loved the variety of books, especially how many nature-themed books were available. And more than anything, my dust allergies didn't explode as soon as I walked in -- even with my mask on I've had issues still at antique and book shops elsewhere. These books were all in pristine condition and the shop wasn't dusty or neglected. You can see the owner/manager/staff carefully curate their collections and rotate them to keep things fresh. Nice little book store. Had a book in mind that I wanted and found it right away. Only complaints I have are the guy running the cash register was no help and kinda stand off-ish. Store didn't seem to have any organization, just lucked outed finding my book. And they didn't really have lots of books like I'd figure they'd have if that makes sense. But it's the best book store in Springfield, OR in my opinion. read more

Several friends had told me that Black Sun Books was an excellent bookstore, so I made sure to drop by on my long road trip from Marin County in California to Bellingham. I was greeted by a particularly excellent poetry section. It is a wonderful bookstore, one that continues the tradition of bookstores that only choose quality books, the kind of store that serious book collectors are always on the lookout for-- especially since these kind of stores are becoming less and less common. It's been a really long time since this place was reviewed and it seems to have a number of poor reviews. That's interesting, because I've found it to be a lovely place, and haven't had an issue with anyone ever being rude to me. There's a wonderful selection of books, both new and used, as well as other sorts of items that would be good gifts. I placed a special order for a book to give as a gift and had no problems at all -- the person I worked with was very accommodating. I can't imagine that I'm the only exception out here, so hopefully more people with good experiences will weigh in! read more

Charming used/new bookstore with an EXCELLENT selection. The owner is very friendly and helpful. I was impressed with the poetry, natural history and literary fiction sections. I am new to Eugene and have been exploring all of the used and indie bookstores and this is by far my favorite. I've seen overall somewhat lower prices at other used bookstores but you earn it by looking through a whole lot of junk.... not this place- the selection is thoughtful and impressive. I went in telling myself I was only allowed to buy one book and ended up walking out with five. Also love that the bookstore is named after Edward Abbey's novel Black Sun, one of my favorite writers. I always like seeing a healthy selection of Abbey at bookstores and was impressed to find a Jim Harrison poetry book- something I sought in several other bookstores in Eugene and could not find. I was about to Amazon it when luckily I found it at Black Sun. Go here and I am sure you will find something you can't live without! read more

Black Sun Books, not for everybody but really cool little bookstore nonetheless. They have a very unique selection. I think they aim for having very nice looking books with emphasis on classic art & literature & philosophy. The prices seem a little high which I suppose helps them maintain the inventory, considering they are VERY picky about what they'll buy. I've lived in this area for over 25 years. I have my silly little complaints, but when I think of bookstores in the area, immediately three come to mind: Smith Family, Tsunami, and Black Sun. So if you like bookstores, don't neglect to check out Black Sun. If only Emerald City were still open! Those blasted corporations! read more

I make a point to visit this store whenever I'm in Eugene and there are always great, well-priced finds. This small store is deceiving - it's got a very well-edited selection with a surprisingly diverse range. Support independent bookstores! Peter Ogura has gone out of his way many times to help me and anyone I've referred locate out-of-print titles. You won't get this kind of service at Barnes and Noble! read more

Per square foot, this is probably the best used bookstore in Eugene. It's not huge but fits a lot of books without feeling crammed, and mostly focuses on literary fiction and science fiction. The stock was mostly used books, but for more popular novels, the type you rarely find at used bookstores, they had normal-priced new copies instead. My absolute favorite bookstore in Eugene. I get scared about it ever going out of business, but I always get a little pleasure when people I talk to don't even know it exists. They do now! This tiny little shop has such an amazing selection, and as previously mentioned, it is indeed extremely well-edited. My first time in, I had my typical anxiety of browsing a place that's empty besides me and maybe one or two other shoppers, but they owner-guy doesn't make you feel awkward, he just leaves you alone and doesn't bug you even if you spend an hour perusing and reading. That being said, he knows he's stuff if you have any questions. He's serious, open, and well-spoken if you want to chat. This place is awesome. read more

Being new to Eugene, I was referred to this wonderful bookshop as one of Eugene's "treasures." It is unassuming from the outside, hiding the charm inside only small bookstores can offer. I found the philosophy and poetry sections, my preferred genres, well developed and extensive. I found a few titles among many to bring home that I have not seen elsewhere. I returned another day with my daughter who too was impressed by the selection for her age group and interests, and was again delighted to bring home a few more. The staff were pleasant and friendly each time. I will undoubtedly return, for this is a gem in the community worthy of supporting. read more

I really like this bookstore, its my favorite in town and I've tried most of them over the past 12 years. It is a cozy settling, great selection, and a comfortable place to browse and read; I have never left without purchasing a book. The have new and used books so the price range allows for a variety of budgets. The owner is very helpful and several times when I wanted a book he didn't have, he ordered it and called me the next day for pick up. Now whenever I need a book, I phone, see if it's in, if it isn't he orders it and I have it quickly. A prior reviewer said this shop focuses on sci fi; not so. This place focuses on modern literature, and where they really excel is in their selection of foreign literature in English translation. They have excellent sections for French, Latin American, African, Russian, German and Japanese authors. The books are covered in mylar, and you can tell the owner Peter respects the books (books are not heaped in the aisles like you see at Smith Family). There is little genre fiction (mystery and sci fi). There is a small but tasty juvenile section, and a nice selection of slipcased Heritage/Folio editions. I can recommend this for gift shopping. read more

I just called Black Sun to ask a simple question and I'm assuming it was the owner who answered with an exacerbated sigh, "YEAH?" At first, I thought I called the wrong number. Okay, no problem, I'm a kind person so I go on with my question. He proceeds to yell at me for asking a stupid question, starting with "What are you thinking?" It was very rude and for that reason, I will never give them my business. There are too many other great bookstores in the area with staff that are kind and helpful. read more

I love this little bookstore, other than the fact that I lose hours of my day whenever I walk through the door. Books are grouped in a way that caters to my interests and I always find too many somethings that I simply have to have. Owner is helpful and very knowledgeable and not intrusive. I love being able to browse without feeling any sort of pressure. Something magical about the place, as if there is far more stuff inside then is possible when you consider the actual small size of the store. read more
