    Korean Short Ribs

It's been a minute since I've posted a real food-focused Yelp review. Is this next year of the pandemic the year I that pick it all back up again? Time will tell. Ha! Blackberry River Bistro is the best spot in eat in Canaan, the competition in not even close. The sister location of Blackberry River Cafe - which I miss dearly! - BRB has been a treat for years. I loved eating there in-person pre-pandemic, and their take-out has helped power my Canaan visits during. Over the years, I have enjoyed a variety of their dishes, from their classic rice bowls, burritos, elote, and artichoke spinach dip. That being said, never skip on one of their specials if you see they are available I had their Banh Mi sandwich last year, which rivals anything I've had in NYC. A recent visit to Canaan landed on a weekend where they were making Korean Short Ribs and Shrimp Pad Thai. Ordering both was the move! The short ribs were braised with soy sauce and brown sugar, the sweet-savory taste countered well by the kick of kimchi with mint to cleanse the palate. The Shrimp Pad Thai was flavorful, not swimming in sauce - good, in my opinion! - and incredibly fresh with its addition of basil, fresh red bell peppers, lime, and flavorful crushed peanuts. Always be sure to finish up with a dessert. From chocolate chip cookies to key lime pie, and many specials in-between, your sweet tooth will be satisfied. If you are comfortable dining indoors, they recently reopened their dining area, always cozy and beautiful. Dine-in or take-out, you can't go wrong however you experience Blackberry River Bistro!

Everything was so good. From beginning to end. Cool quaint spot. A good variety options such as street corn, burritos, tacos, rice bowl, desserts. Good choices for beer and wine. Let's just say I was stuffed after my street corn order. Other dishes were being served I didn't know what to choose lol. I ordered tacos . For dessert I went with the cinnamon cheesecake with Mexican chocolate. So darn good! Oh the great falls mango beer superb. No complaints I had a great time catching up with my friend while stuffing my face at the bistro lol.

So the people who run Blackberry River Bakery, Audrey and Sam, have opened this wonderful Mexican restaurant just down the road. Like the bakery, the food is amazing and reasonably priced. We've been a few times and have had creative tacos, filling bowls, and authentic Mexican Corn. They're planning on extending their hours, which is a huge boon to the community. This food totally makes for a fun dinner out.

In Canaan Ct, I got Korean fried chicken and Mexican street corn and it was delicious. The host was very accommodating and the vibe relaxed.

What a gem of a place…read more We were looking for someplace rustic yet refined- and this was the perfect blend of both. Perfect weekend getaway. And we were treated to an amazing jazz band on Friday night! No front desk everything is handled by text it call and that worked just fine for us. Very responsive and helpful. The rooms do not have TVs or mini fridges- but you aren't here anyhow to watch TV. Really comfortable bed and perfect for a peaceful nights slumber. The property is beautiful - plenty of hiking and walking trails. Great locations and amazing views. Do not overlook the stagecoach tavern in the property for dinners- I'll review that separately. Breakfasts were amazing and the same superior quality as the restaurant. Best food we have had in a long time. The staff is more than happy to accommodate you in the private sauna or an outside fire with smores! Looking forward to our next trip here.

Buyer beware! I'll break this review up into three parts because there are a lot of moving parts…read morehere. Booking/ pricing/ management: We stayed a night at the Race Brook Lodge to see a concert a little while ago. At first glance, a stay here looks a little pricey based on what you appear to be getting. In my head, $200 for a small room in a converted barn is steep. When I went to book it, I was asked to select a "package." There was one advertising a nights stay, a three course dinner in the Stagecoach Tavern, and breakfast the next day for $185. I thought since dinner and breakfast were included, that wasn't such a bad deal after all. Total cost after taxes and fees when I hit the purchase button: $201 Imagine my surprise when I got my confirmation email and took a look at the receipt- $309. I quickly looked at my credit card statement, sure enough- $309. I sent them an email immediately asking what was up with the extra $108. Crickets. Oh well, I figured I could just hash it out with them when we got there. I came to find out that there is no front desk, and everything is handled over text messages, so that made it a little more difficult. When the time came to check out, I got a text asking me to click a link to view my "balance." I clicked it and discovered that they were attempting to charge me another $92. At this point I sent them another email and told them that this felt like a scam, and that I would be disputing the charges with my credit card. They responded right away saying that there was a miscommunication, the "package" was actually separate from the room charge and that they were supposed to let me know of that right after I booked, but someone dropped the ball. They did eventually honor the original $201 price that I was quoted, but if I hadn't noticed the discrepancy or been firm about fixing it, I can't imagine they would have refunded it by themselves. Sidenote: when looking closely at the dinner/breakfast package pricing- it's an absolute ripoff. "Package" dinner: $150 Meals Tax: $10.50 Billed gratuity: $24.00 All in- $184.50. For ONE person. For dinner and a middle of the road buffet breakfast? The "three course dinner" allows you to pick any starter, entree, and dessert from the restaurant menu. If you picked the three most expensive items in each category, it would be $104. Plus a $15 breakfast, you're still not even in the neighborhood of $150. I suppose selecting the meal package bestows on you the honor of donating an extra $31 to the owners of the lodge. Great deal! The Room: We were happy enough with our room. It was nothing special, but it had air conditioning, hot water, and it was clean: really my only three boxes that need to be checked by a hotel. The photos on their website appear to be from 2017, which made me a little weary, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the room actually looked better in person. We stayed in the Hayloft #7 room. The concert in the barn: The concert we saw was EXCELLENT. The barn is an amazing venue for a small show like the one we saw. Everyone was giving each other a respectful amount of space, and there truly was not a bad view to be found anywhere. It was hot inside the night we were there, but when it gets to be a little much, you can just step outside, grab a glass of water and some fresh air, and come back in and still have an amazing view of the show. As far as concert venues go, it doesn't get much better than that. All in all, I can't recommend staying here. I'd go see another show in a heartbeat, but would look elsewhere for accommodations. Our time at the lodge was pleasant enough, but the funny business with their pricing left a really bad taste in my mouth. At my most charitable- I'd say it's bad bang for your buck. At worst, the pricing is intentionally ambiguous.

When we reserved our room, we purchased the dinner package, which included a three course dinner at Stagecoach Tavern. The website stated that gratuity was included in the package because "we have raised our prices to provide better wages for our staff." With the lack of a front desk & seemingly no internal system for keeping track of guests, this "package" proved to be difficult & frustrating to redeem. The staff didn't seem to to know about our 6:45 dinner reservation, let alone our dinner package. But eventually we were led to a table where we sat & waited. & waited. We waited so long, without anyone visiting our table to even take our drink order, that we had time to notice some disturbing things around us. 1. Lipstick stains on the cloth napkins. 2. Lipstick gunk on the water glasses. 3. Flies buzzing around everywhere. 4. Other patrons looking annoyed & restless. About 15 minutes into our sit, another couple was led to a table next to us. Then the server returned to take their drink order. Then they received their drinks. Then they ordered food. ... All before anyone spoke to us. At one point, we made note that they might know the owner. In that case, how embarrassing for Stagecoach Tavern to have a dining room full of restless guests & continuing to only dote on the customers they know personally. Bad practice. Finally, after about almost an hour of sitting, a very stressed bartender noticed us. He stopped to take our drink order, despite our table being very obviously out of his jurisdiction. He was out of breath & agitated, so we didn't think it was a good time to bring up our alleged "package." We just ordered "whatever can be made quickly," since we had a concert to get to. My partner ordered the burger. I ordered the fried fish. He was quickly on his way. Then the special table next to us received their food. Our table was still empty, except for the lipstick stained napkins, the lipstick gunked water glasses, & the flies. There was a table of 3 near us that had been already sitting when we arrived at Stagecoach Tavern. They were restless & clearly upset. When they finally got a chance, they flagged down the elusive server (who had still not visited our table) to ask for their food to-go. They couldn't wait any longer. We watched in horror as the server gave no explanation, no apology, & no discount to the table of 3 that was requesting their "fine dining" to-go because it was taking so long. After speaking with the table of 3, the server finally came to our table. It had been OVER an HOUR since we had been sat. She didn't realize that the bartender had been by, so she asked us what she could get us to drink. We told her that we didn't need to order anything, as we had already spoken with the bartender. I did request replacement water glasses, though. We also asked if our two entrees could be covered by our dinner "package" because we didn't have the time to wait for a three-course meal at this point. She said no. We asked her to check with a manager. The VIP table next to us had completely finished their meal & were waiting for the check, at this time. We didn't hear back from her & didn't receive new water glasses. Eventually, our drinks & food were dropped at our table by a member of the kitchen staff. My partner said the burger was phenomenal. The fried fish dish was a nice medley of flavors. I particularly enjoyed the unique blueberry/dill combination. It was, unfortunately, tedious to eat & not enough food. I knew I would still be hungry, but we certainly didn't have the time or patience to order anything else. The concert was due to begin at any moment, so I left the tavern to head over to the venue, leaving my partner with the unsavory job of settling the bill (thank you, love you.) Apparently they did eventually call it a wash, as our two drinks & two entrees tallied up to a total that was far less than what the dinner package could potentially include. My partner left a $20 bill on the bar for the bartender. After the fact, we were charged $185 for the dinner package that was supposed to be included in our room reservation. They included a $24 restaurant gratuity charge which really tied my knickers in a knot, considering their spiel about raising staff pay & included gratuity. Even if you build your own three course dinner by ordering the most expensive starter, entree, & dessert off the menu, you still won't tally up a $185 bill. The dinner package is a scam. After repeated attempts to contact their customer service (again, there's no front desk) we finally received a refund for the dinner package. What a disaster. Where is management?
