Why am I even surprised anymore when world class food pops up in the tiniest towns in Connecticut and Vermont? We've stumbled across so many truly excellent places in the middle of nowhere that I really ought to expect the unexpected by now. Yet Blue Gate, a newly opened bakery located on a small farm just over the Cornwall / Sharon border (near that really funky intersection of 7 and 4), still manages to surprise and delight with its exceptional pastries, bread, and coffee. Across several visits, laminated pastries have been textbook perfect across the board, flakey layers encasing a variety of interesting, delicious, well made fillings. The outer crust is crisp and shatters gently, perfectly in your mouth. Inside, the tender, fragrant layers are the love child of lots of good butter and elbow grease. The almond croissant is generously filled with frangipane and among the best I've had in years, comparable to Maman's, better than Balthazar's. Pastries, which currently range between $4 and $6 and are well worth the spend, are an obvious draw, but don't sleep on the excellent breads. A satisfyingly hefty, well risen, crusty loaf of sourdough is lightly enough salted that it would work as well for a PBJ as it would for grilled cheese. Their (CT raised?) sourdough culture is mellow and easygoing, not aggressively sour. Focaccia is made with a generous amount of olive oil in the pan, resulting in the fetchingly crisp crust and chewy innards that we really go for. I didn't love the big chunks of slightly dry, mealy, diced (Russet?) potatoes on the version we recently purchased. (Thinly sliced, tender Golds would've been ever so much better...) But the focaccia itself was gorgeous, inflected with sweet, caramelized onions. I'm not a coffee connoisseur at all, but the house coffee served here is strong, well brewed, mellow and not bitter. You serve yourself from an insulated carafe. That may not seem promising at first. but at 10 something a.m. on a Saturday, the coffee tasted freshly brewed and uncommonly good. There's some indoor seating in both the main room at two picnic tables and in the parlour like room off to the side. (It's is a bit chilly in winter given the high ceilings and constant flow of traffic through the front door, so keep those jackets on.) Staff are friendly; Bruce, a co-owner of the farm, is in the kitchen regularly. We look forward to trying the fresh, farm-grown produce in the spring! And in the meantime, we'll have one more of everything else on offer, please.

I go hiking and then check out reviews of local bakeries. It's what I do…read more I love morning glory muffins and have had them at quite a few places. Everyone seems to use pretty much the same recipe with some slight variations. The muffins I had here were weird. I don't know what that dominant spice they used is but it was really kind of awful. Weird is just the only word I can think of to describe it. And the muffin was not dense at all. It kind of fell apart when you bit into it. I took a "sour cherry" pastry home snd it was ok. The apricot scone was bleh. I think this place will be a skip in the future.

However, they were out of a lot of bakery items by noon, so I'd recommend getting there early on the weekends. I went for the Smoked salmon bagel, and I kid you not, it was a religious experience. By far, the best jalapeño cheddar bagel I've ever had. I don't know how they made it but angels most definitely had to be involved. Order it with the scallion cream cheese and pay the extra $0.50 for the capers, it's worth it. I don't live in the area, so I will pray to the food gods to present me with an opportunity to return & eat that sandwich again.

I had the cashew bark, which was absolutely delicious, and a chai that was perfectly spiced and really hit the spot. The atmosphere is just as great as the treats. They have seating and even some games, which makes it a fun place to hang out and relax while you enjoy your snack. The staff were also kind and helpful when choosing what we wanted. If I lived in the area, I would definitely be a regular here. Highly recommend stopping by if you're nearby!

The owner, Gary Kidd, goes out of his way to make it a destination with activities for kids and adults - photo booth, board games inside, outside games, and a winter igloo outside currently. Their handcrafted chocolates are phenomenal and there are all kinds of drinks to pair with them - coffee, tea, hot chocolate, bobo tea and specialty drinks that are named after local spots (including the three independent schools in town). Ice cream is served year round. The ever-changing decorations inside are not to be missed - the Harry Potter theme one was particularly great with clouds suspended from the ceiling along with wands and other things throughout the store. Make plans to visit Kent and stop by.

BINGO, I came across Horton House Scone Company at my local health food store. So I bought 2 and they were SO GOOD that I had to buy directly from the company. They are so good that my 30 and 32 year old couldn't even tell that they were Vegan, gluten and dairy free. Most people associate gluten or dairy free foods (actually vegan for that matter too) to be tasteless and dry. Well, think again. If it was taken out of the packaging and put on a plate at a 5 star restaurant you wouldn't know that it had no gluten or dairy. For those with nut issues they are also nut free. I feel like I absolutely hit the jackpot. My entire family eats these scones. BTW the customer service is amazing too. They went on vacation and couldn't fill my order for a couple of days. They actually called to tell me that. Everything is just great about this company. My recommendations to try: Apricot, Cinnaswirl, Peanut Butter Chip are among my favorites. Just ordered another box and will try the blueberry bayou this time. If it's like the others, I will not be disappointed. Thank you for amazing and tasty gluten and dairy free options!
