The dentist came in afterward for the new patient exam and spent it selling. It had come up in conversation that I was planning orthodontics and eventually implants, and that I already had my specialists chosen. That was the end of anything clinical. He used my appointment time trying to transfer that treatment to himself and his own network. His entire argument was that specialists are expensive, made while he rubbed his fingers together at me in the universal gesture for money. It was crass. I told him flatly that I could afford it, but he wouldn't stop pitching. That was it. Nothing about my teeth, my gums, my bone, or how any of it should be sequenced. Just that the people specifically trained to do this work charge more than he does, delivered with performed concern for my budget by the man who conveniently wanted the case. He never probed my periodontal pockets. I kept waiting for it through the whole appointment and it never came, and he never raised my periodontal status with me at all, even though it's the measurement that determines whether someone can support implants in the first place. Avoid this place if you dislike tacky sales pitches and incomplete dental exams.

I found this…read moreoffice via Google searches when I was looking for an office with some later hours to accommodate my unpredictable work schedule --- Smiles is open until 7PM Mon to Thurs and luckily is quite convenient to my house. I still remember being shocked at how nice and approachable everyone was on my first visit. The waiting room has comfortable chairs and an inviting atmosphere with music playing throughout the office. Each staff member introduced themselves with a smile and I was taken on a brief tour of the office (and made aware that they offer a few free refreshments if needed). I was even given a small gift as a thank you for joining the practice! Since that time, the staff continues to greet me warmly. I've been sent tokens of appreciation for friends/family that I've referred there (who else can say their dentist sent them a steakhouse giftcard?!) and Dr. Rautio expresses gratitude every time she sees me. I look forward to catching up with my usual dental hygienist, Yessy, who remembers to ask about the trips and life updates I had mentioned the time before. They return phone calls and emails quickly and often text me on days I have a late evening appointment to let me know they're able to accommodate me earlier if it works better for me. The personal touches at Smiles of Wilmington are incredible and so appreciated. I am confident I can trust them with all dental care as well. Aside from reviewing their available services on the first visit, they have never made sales pitches for services I didn't need or want. If I could benefit from additional options, they explain the reasoning and respect my decisions if I opt in or out.
