Yes, they are pricey (but in my humble American experience there is quite a mark up on *all* clothes in Canada vs the States - like a cheap tank top at H&M will be $5 more automatically in Canada - the exchange rate right now more than makes up for it) but a lot of the items aren't much - if any - cheaper online. I also just love supporting places like this, since there are so few left, and since a lot of "goth" brands run small I prefer to try a lot of the stuff on in person. The girl working and I had a good chat about the history/future of Lip Service in particular and some other stuff. She was super helpful and friendly which was also a change from a lot of alt shops, where the employees seem to spend their time perfecting that "I'm way too fucking cool to talk to you" vibe that makes me eye roll. I wanted *all* the things but settled on two LS dresses, one of which was shiny PVC and fulfilled all of 15 year old me's dreams. Definitely a spot to check out for a pricier but quality "statement piece" or to comb the shoe and clothing sales racks. I'd also like to add they had a surprising amount of men's clothes and not just band t-shirts and jeans either.

Ideally I prefer to buy their clothes in Minnesota (no taxes on personal attire) when the Canadian dollar is strong but occasionally I do pick up something here or in other Canadian locations. The store in question is convenient, bright, well stocked and they do have a small sale section at the back. Honestly, each time I go in the people are really nice and very helpful. For example, I came in to buy a shoe lace a few months back, mine tore on the way in to downtown, and the manager just gave me one. I felt special all day! They open early and it is a pleasure to visit. Okay. Now I have convinced myself. I think I may buy more of their items this week!

Shout outs to serpentine for being the last stockist in Toronto of a certain type of fashion, ever…read moresince the loss of Da Zoooo - think Rick Owens, Julius, Boris, Guidi. Serpentine is a very well curated boutique - from homeware to motorcycle helmets to skateboards that I'm not even sure you can buy to avant garde jewelry and clothing, they build up a fantastic image and aesthetic. For this I give them props - I love when a boutique commits fully. The workers tend to be dressed fully in the type of clothes they sell, and are pretty knowledgeable about the designers. That being said, this store is very clearly targeted at people who have a LOT of money to spend. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, (and to be honest, it makes a lot of sense, given the prime location and the price of the garms) but what I take issue with is how the store treats people that they don't think will cash out. I've been interrogated about whether or not I would commit to buying something before they let me try it on, and the majority of the people I talk to have similar experiences to share. I've made a few purchases there and they seem to have eased up, but it contributes to a very negative first impression. They also talk shit about the other clothing stores in the area, which I guess fits with their edgy aesthetic. If you've got money and are interested in this sort of designer clothing, Paul and co are great affable folks and I strongly recommend checking out serpentine. If you're looking for a boutique where you can try on geobaskets before buying a pair on grailed, I recommend staying away, because they have no incentive to help you and you won't have a great time.
