Really great store; staff (Alex was great, gave me the dime tour) is exceptionally knowledgeable, courteous, and considerate. Selection is far greater than other LFSs I've seen in the area. Some oddities and rarities, but most impressive to me was the quality of the livestock. HUGE gold rams, great looking apistos, variety of rainbows, and neocardia more vibrant than I've seen most other places. Browsed the saltwater side as well, though that's not my specialty. Lots of fire fish, tangs, angels; a couple of the most impressive lionfish I've seen anywhere (commercial aquariums included). Hard good selection is impressive. I got interested in setting up a 20g aquarium for my home study after getting my son a few frogs and glo fish in a 10g. I had never had an aquarium before. I have loved taking my son and shopping at Blake's. The owner and staff are all knowledgeable, engaged, helpful and friendly. They do not try to up-sell, but work with you to figure out what you want to do while offering as many suggestions as you need or want and then work with you on making it happen. If they think something you're interested in won't work with your setup, they will let you know. Both owner and staff recognized us from our first trip when we went in for our second. Where to start, I went into this store curious with what they had there and I was impressed. Their selection of aquatic life is amazing! The Owner of the store is very knowledgeable, pleasant & answered all of my questions. I ended up purchasing a beaaauuuuutiful pair of Fancy Killifish, however the female passed a day or two after I put her in her new home. Blake's Aqua Den has got to be the friendliest place to shop for Fish. I love my saltwater fish from Blake's and I am always buying New tanks weather it be brand new or slightly used from him to fit one in every room. Recently I haven't had luck getting the right Clown Trigger (see photo below). I was able to watch him in store so I knew he (clown trigger) was the right fit for me. This is by far the best clown trigger I have ever owned in ten years. Beautiful colors and amazing attitude/playful. I was so upset when other fish stores wouldn't tell me where they got there fish from and what's it's eating habits were. This is why I love small owned fish stores. Nice selection of fish. Went in there and said I had an algae problem. They sold me a scooter blenny saying that he would eat the algae. I looked him up afterward and I found out that he's a dragonet and requires copepods. Also realized he was already very hungry when I got him since his stomach was caved in. Called them to tell them a week later to ask if I could return the fish, and they said no and that I was wrong, that scooter blennies are not dragonets (which they are: https://www.liveaquaria.com/product/96/?pcatid=96) I tried getting copepods to add to the tank and target feeding him mysis shrimp with an eyedropper (he would eat it too!), he lived for about a month or two then died of starvation (he was so incredibly thin despite these regular feedings!). Perhaps this is a rookie mistake to trust what's said at a local fish store and not research behorehand, but it especially bothered me that they told me the wrong information twice and a poor fish died as a result. read more

My son and I go to Blakes every week to check out the cool and unusual salt water fish and invertebrates. Blake and his son are always helpful and have lots of information. Their prices are fair and they have plenty of healthy and well fed fish to choose from. We only shop at Blakes and we like to support the last of the small time fish stores....great people there. read more

Blake's a solid honest guy, with a great selection of fresh and saltwater fish. He also has hard and soft corals, and invertebrates. Everything is super healthy. Have purchased multiple times, and never had any problems. He just told me that he is relocating the store to Main Street in Meriden, not sure of the new address, but sounds like he will be in the new location by the end of January. read more
