Fantastic selection of tropical & marine fish for aquariums. It's a throwback store, reminds me of the many pet shops I remember from back in the heyday of fish-keeping (the 70's to the early 90's). Sadly, most of the shops are long gone, replaced by the Big Box stores like PetsMart and PetCo. Those Big Box stores do not carter to the true fish hobbyist, but Emmon's Tropical Fish does. I saw fish today that I haven't seen in over 20 years. And all the fish I observed were very healthy and well cared for. I was very impressed with this tropical fish store. My wife picked up a double-tail Betta fish and she couldn't be happier. read more

Emmons is by far the best store for the aquarium hobby that I have found in the state of CT. They have the cleanest tanks by far compared to everyone else. They have a great selection of fish including many that you will never find at your chain pet stores. Most importantly, their customer service is excellent. I've been going to their store for the past 5 years and any fish that hasn't made it after bringing it home they have stood by and replaced (which is few and far between, also given that the tank water tested within normal limits), and any unexpected overly aggressive fish that ended up causing harm to other fish in my tanks they have taken back and worked with me to find a better option. The owners are frequently in-house and extremely knowledgeable with any questions you have. Be aware that the prices are a little higher compared to chain stores...but you get what you pay for. These fish are well taken care of...living in good water conditions, clean tanks, disease free and well fed. You don't find that at chain stores. If you want to be a true aquarium hobbyist, or even just enjoy an easy aquarium set-up with your kids, Emmons is the best place to get your fish from. They will be of the highest quality! read more

Emmons has a wide variety of animals. However, they are mostly known for their fish. The atmosphere is slightly smaller and tighter, so more like a pet STORE than a pet DISPLAY. All of the people there were the nicest!! I would mainly go here for fish, birds, mice, ferrets, or really any exotic animal. Emmons isn't for everyone, but it's pretty cool to me! :) read more

This store is a local hidden treasure. I am a freshwater tropical fish addict, and they feel my addiction. The store is a bit crowded, but with an excellent selection. My kids, adults now, LOVED trips to the store to check out the fish, reptiles and assorted pocket pets. Staff is friendly, and the animals all appear healthy. read more

We have been going to Emmon's for over 10 years. We have purchased freshwater fish, saltwater fish, outdoor koi and numerous supplies for our setups. They are helpful without being pushy. If a fish isn't a good fit for the current fish in our aquarium(s), they let us know that. We can't speak more highly about them. They are the best. read more

My 4 year old asked for an small (10 gallon) aquarium of this birthday/Christmas gift (same day). We visited Emmon's and sought advice for setting our aquarium up. We did as told and returned 5 days after the system was running to select his fish. My son chose beautiful colorful fish - 18 of them!!! As the fish were being bagged, I (nervously) asked what the policy was if they didn't make it (gulp!). I was told "within 36-48 hours, we are very flexible." That was a Friday evening. On Sunday morning, I woke up and all 18 fish were dead or obviously dying. By Sunday night, all 18 fish were dead. I did not want my four year old to experience this tragedy, so I returned to the store with the dead fish in a ziplock and with a water sample. The water tested fine. I was told that my "toxic heater" killed the fish. Steve Emmon refused to replace a single fish. I replaced 7 of the most colorful/favorite fish, so my son would not know the severity of what happened to his aquarium. I literally spent $300 dollars on fish at this store in a weekend and was treated poorly as a customer. Shameful! It may be a pretty shop; they may have a great selection of merchandise; but they have terrible customer service and they did not support me as a local consumer. I will not return. Other independent pet stores, such as Harris in Wonderland in Avon, deliver much better customer service. read more

Wide variety of freshwater fish along with plants and many tanks and other items that other fish stores do not have!my onky complaint is hes extremely expensive and Mark's his fish up way to high a 15 dollar fish will be 70 with him and talking him down for him to make a sale is a no go read more

I would like to start by saying that if you are looking for fish, this place has many, and they seem to be well taken care of. They should only carry fish. The animals in the store do not appear to receive the same care. There were rabbits in cages barely big enough for them to turn around in, stacked on shelves one on top of the other. One of them was on the floor in the corner in the dark because there wasn't even any room for the cage to be somewhere that light reaches it. A depressing amount of gerbils in one tank, the tanks smelled, and the ventilation in the place was terrible. I understand the mice are probably bred to feed snakes but come on, there's no excuse for the rabbits, or some of the other small animals being kept there. I left the store deeply upset by the way the animals were kept. read more

4.5 stars I think Emmons is as good as it gets for both a LFS and a small animal pet retailer. I am a big animal advocate, and very critical of abusive or neglect situations. Over the last 20 years Emmons has been our source for all things fish, and for 8 years all things gecko lizard. Friendly and informative, the staff is fantastic. The cages are always clean. Yes, it is crowded, and if there was not a high turnover, these cages, while clean and well tended would be too small for the critters to live in. That said, I have always seen a big turn over with few animals lingering for long. The half star I took away is for this reason alone, the mammals are in somewhat cramped quarters. But they are clean, well fed and used to being handled, which is so much better than in many places.... read more

Nice fish store in the middle of nowhere. You will drive right past it if you aren't listening carefully to the gps. It's very very cramped inside, not a place for someone with claustrophobia. It's a lil stinky and a lil noisy but the fish selection is awesome. Rarities are their specialty, and they will go above and beyond to order something they don't have. We have had excellent luck with the health of them, and many have lasted for years. If they relocated, they would be perfect. read more

This store is about 25 minutes from my house. There's a Pet Smart about 10 minutes away. This place is totally worth the drive. They have a great selection of all kinds of fish, tropical and freshwater. We started at Pet Smart but after all those fish died on us we went to Emmons and haven't had a problem since. The other day we had a swordtail that was bullying the other fish. Emmons took him back, no problem, and even let us trade him for a different fish. They have a wide selection of aquarium accessories and treatment kits and staff is very knowledgeable. They even do outdoor ponds. My only warning is that if you're claustrophobic be warned, the store is kind of cramped. Overall, we've been repeat customers and I definitely recommend it! read more

Very good selection of both freshwater and saltwater fish, as well as a fantastic selection of supplies. However, their care of their reptiles, amphibians and small mammals is unacceptable and is not something I can look past. The rabbit, who was kept in a very small wire-bottomed cage which is very bad for their feet, also was given no hay and a water bottle that was far too small, the guinea pigs, mice, and rats were packed into tiny cages that were coated in feces to the point that the smell was almost unbearableto the point that I had to step outside for a moment, and this is coming from someone who is not squeamish with smells at all. The birds were also in a ridiculously small cage, and the bearded dragons, who were kept on sand which is insanely dangerous for tiny bearded dragons due to impaction, looked extremely malnourished. Coming from someone who has a lot of experience with both small mammals like rabbits and reptiles, I think Emmon's is better off just selling fish. read more

We've gone to Emmons for years, and most of the time we have had great experiences! 70% of the fish purchased have survived for years, with the exception of a German blue ram cichlid which passed the day of purchase and a pair of miniature African pufferfish, which were sold alongside a 2.5 gallon freshwater aquarium with the assurance that they would do just fine. Turns out they're strictly brackish water fish, and died a week later. Otherwise, any other purchases from Emmons spanning nine years were fine. We have been customers of Emmon's ever since I won a goldfish at the Fireman's Carnival years ago. During that time we have purchased everything from fish to birds to rabbits to guinea pigs and more (we are talking about quite a few years here). The animals have always been in perfect health and if you take the time to talk to anyone on the staff, their love of the animals and doing what they are doing is obvious. They have always had anything and everything we've ever needed in stock, and in the unfortunate instance that one of our pets become ill in any way. They not only took the time to knowingly educate us on a cure, they compassionately explained what to expect. I'd give them six stars if I could. In fact, I have been in the store when the employees actually take the animals out to give them attention and love. Emmons is a great place and loves all of its animals. I've been going here for years. Extremely knowledgeable staff, lots of unusual choices of fish. A little on the expensive side....but you do get what you pay for. It is a little crowded/cluttered. Some people I think are expecting a zoo...It is a pet store. By far the animals are significantly better taken care of than any other pet store I've been in locally. And to Kelley B I would add,"but come on...have you actually looked into how animals are treated at chain pet stores???" Emmons is by far a more humane choice, for those that care about that. read more
