It always seems like there is a really relaxed vibe and the low lighting and heated bar really add to this experience. I used to think that The Abbey was just a bar (by no means a bad thing!) but I stopped in for lunch and had a spectacular pulled pork sandwich a few days ago. Dare I say it... The best pulled pork sandwich in downtown Menomonie?! The sauce sounds like it would be weird because there is mustard in it but I can confirm that it is delicious and really makes the sandwich. Props to The Abbey for having a limited menu and having a few really good dishes instead of a bunch of average bar food. Apart from the atmosphere, food and staff there are really good drink specials at The Abbey as well! Every day there is a near unbearable special. When school is in session these deals are definitely taken advantage of by the Stout students. If I had to credit this place for just one thing it would be that the building itself is such a relaxing place. No flashing lights, no overly loud music and no amateur DJ screaming at the top of their lungs like other bars in Menomonie. Even yet, if inside is a little too much you can always step out onto the patio. If you're looking for a relaxed cocktail in Menomonie this is your place.

This place rocks. The fact that the menu is limited is a positive. They are freakishly good at…read moremaking the items on the menu. And just when you think your whole day is shot because the slaw has broccoli (we know that Wisconsinites loathe anything that did not have parents) bam - there's bacon in it! Abbey (from the Abbey) is the coolest Abbey I know. Much cooler than any other Abbey, including Westminster and Downton. My dog enjoys the back patio where she can chill and dream about all the wonderful smells that waft from the kitchen. The sandwiches are amazing. The drinks are made well and the free chaser is like a prize my liver didn't know it won.

Saturday I set out for a short brewery trek of three breweries... I was excited to visit my 363rd,…read more4th and 365th breweries! Quite the array my palate experienced! The first brewery.... fine, just fine, nothing great. The last brewery? Off the charts... fantastic!! Balsam Lake? Yikes..... I arrived to a full patio and quite the busy inside. Good omen, right? Once I began tasting through my flight... two words came to mind...not sure if they're correct or... but they were... Tourist Trap....? I built a flight of four, four styles I commonly order, so I'm familiar with them and they're preferred. My flight consisted of #3 Angler's Amber, #7 Stump Bay Stout, #17 Marges Doppleganger Doppelbock & #18 Haugen All The Honey. The Honey beer was delicious and was he only one I could stomach to want to finish. The Angler's Amber? WHAT is that, is that a Bitter Amber? That is NOT a style....for good reason! This beer I could only take three sips of... in disbelief that it was that bad! The stout and doppelbock....just not good. Three days later and I'm still at a loss for words to describe what my palate was dealing with? Being to nearly 400 breweries I wouldn't consider myself a slouch, nor definitely an expert but when three of four beers are unpalatable... it's not me... it's the beer. Such a disappointing experience. Getting the $16.00 tab for what I considered awful beer sure didn't help ease the unfulfilling feeling. Maybe I should have opted for the Boysenberry Blonde that I debated and a beertender said was her current go-to? This brewery is three years old so...maybe they're still working kinks out? New brewer? I may have to peruse untappd for other beer ratings but at this juncture I wouldn't go back, just bummed out by the experience as a whole.

Look, this should not be a five star review. I was in Morty's for all of maybe 10 minutes. But in…read morethat time, I had my first ever Wisconsin sweet brandy old fashioned in Wisconsin and on top of that the bartender saved my night with some good old-fashioned empathy and barroom advice. It's a long and convoluted story, but I was with my minor child who was on the verge of a panic attack and needed to sit down somewhere, we were caught in a thunderstorm, and it felt like everything in town was closed. Probably because it was. Bayfield isn't exactly a late night town... nor does Uber or Lyft function out this way, despite the respective apps claiming otherwise. Morty's was close by. It was open. And I remembered that in Wisconsin not only can minor's sit at the bar, if they are with their legal parent they can even have a drink. Man, Wisconsin is the best! But the kid just wanted a soda, and I could have used a drink. So an old fashioned for me and a Coke for the kid. I shared our story with the bartender, and she offered some sage guidance. In a few minutes my wife arrived with the car to bring us back to our cabin. But let's hear it for the good old fashioned bar that provides both literal and figurative shelter from the storm. Wish I could have stayed longer, but even in my short time it left an indelible impression.
