Madeline Island is already quaint and intimate yet almost every patron makes small talk in a nice way. We met a cute poodle named Tommy on the patio and the owner allowed me to feed him some of my fabulous pork apple meal. There is a wide variety of food and cocktails. My husband and I split the Caesar salad with chicken (the chicken was not that great so I recommend omitting that) and then he had the pot pie and I had the apple pork with potatoes. Everything was flavored well and felt comforting. For dessert, we split the apple pie. The staff even warmed it up for us. Thank you!!

I used to think that The Abbey was just a bar (by no means a bad thing!) but I stopped in for lunch and had a spectacular pulled pork sandwich a few days ago. Dare I say it... The best pulled pork sandwich in downtown Menomonie?! The sauce sounds like it would be weird because there is mustard in it but I can confirm that it is delicious and really makes the sandwich. Props to The Abbey for having a limited menu and having a few really good dishes instead of a bunch of average bar food. Apart from the atmosphere, food and staff there are really good drink specials at The Abbey as well! Every day there is a near unbearable special. When school is in session these deals are definitely taken advantage of by the Stout students. If I had to credit this place for just one thing it would be that the building itself is such a relaxing place. No flashing lights, no overly loud music and no amateur DJ screaming at the top of their lungs like other bars in Menomonie. They had a band the night before and they hadn't quite cleaned up after, in fact the ladies from the night before were not too "lady like" (not my words, theirs). It's a long and convoluted story, but I was with my minor child who was on the verge of a panic attack and needed to sit down somewhere, we were caught in a thunderstorm, and it felt like everything in town was closed. Probably because it was. Bayfield isn't exactly a late night town... nor does Uber or Lyft function out this way, despite the respective apps claiming otherwise. Morty's was close by. It was open. And I remembered that in Wisconsin not only can minor's sit at the bar, if they are with their legal parent they can even have a drink. Man, Wisconsin is the best! But the kid just wanted a soda, and I could have used a drink. So an old fashioned for me and a Coke for the kid. I shared our story with the bartender, and she offered some sage guidance. In a few minutes my wife arrived with the car to bring us back to our cabin. But let's hear it for the good old fashioned bar that provides both literal and figurative shelter from the storm.
