I wish I could give this place a 3.5 stars. As an art neophyte, entering the doors of this incredibly well stocked and organized store was a little intimidating. I just wanted to practice some art, I had no idea that I could choose from thousands of paints, 100s of different brushes and a multitude of canvases and sketch pads. The people in the store who work there are very helpful, though they tend to stay together in groups talking to each other. I ended up getting some really basic and cheap paints, but I will definitely go back if I get better at painting. read more

I've never been to the actual stores in Boston, but I've used their online store for all of my art supply needs since 2008. VERY inexpensive, and they turned a $200+ supply list (if I had gone to Michael's or AC Moore) for my freshman year into a $90 expense, including express shipping. I've used them every year since for random projects, and the occasional time I decide to listen to my professors and buy what they tell me to get for my projects. I've never had an issue with billing, shipping, or anything. The fact that I am able to get name brand, top quality art supplies for a fraction of what I would pay from the brand itself or an overpriced local art store means that I can paint, doodle, sketch, and draw with confidence that I won't be just another starving artist using my last dollar to buy Prismacolor pencils. read more

Blick is a great art store, no doubt about it, and with all the sales going on, I feel like I'm always getting a great deal!!! Despite the fact that I still end up shelling 200 bucks for paintbrushes, paints, paper, charcoal, erasers, pens, rulers, watercolors, pads, etc The store offers a lot of stuff, and its location is ideal (right at the Landmark Center, located 10 mins walking distance from MFA, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Mass Art, SMFA, and a bunch of other schools) for the art kid (aside from the Art Institute, sorry that you guys are in Porter Square) . I always enjoy going there because I know I have to spend money on things, which is fine because I like making art. The only real knock on Blick is that I end up going there more than I want to because I can never find everything I need in one trip. . .its either they don't have it, they sold out, or they just never carried it to begin with. Also, sometimes it lacks in variety of brand names for things, carrying one specific company and not its competitors (booo, this is a free market capitalist society! I would think fellow art heads would know this!) But other than that its pretty good. Also the staff is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable because they were either former art students, current artists, or freeloaders (ha ha just kidding), but they honestly know what they are talking about. I'm not an artist, so I guess I can't really review this place the same way that an artist would. BUT, I have come here several times because I needed paintbrushes. I needed paintbrushes... for my brains. (I slice preserved mouse brains into very thin, delicate sections for my science job, and the best way to pick them up is with a small paintbrush.) Despite my lab being located right next to Mass Art, this is the closest art supply store that I could find. And they had nice paintbrushes. I also killed some time that I should have spent working, looking at all the pretty paints and crayons and art kits for kids and hmm, maybe my little cousin would like this journal, or my roommate might want one of these pretty calendars... Still, the place felt kind of like the Home Depot of art supply stores and I got pretty lost trying to find what I needed. The staff didn't seem inclined to offer me help, but neither did they hassle me about carrying my backpack around, or wasting their time by buying just one measly paintbrush. I wait all year for the fall canvas sale. And then, I buy too many. But but but it's 50% off canvases, 60% off if you buy 10 or more (and yes, you can mix-n-match), and 70% off 20 or more! I can't help myself - those big white spaces make me wanna drop major scrilla. I was first introduced to Blick when I needed to buy mounting board for one of my graphic design classes. As a poor college student, I thought it was an extravagant request on the part of my professor. But wowie zowie, it really does make a difference. And now that I'm dating the son of two artists, I've also come to learn what a difference a simple painting can make on your home decor scheme. That's where Blick comes in. I'll first start by saying that I used to be an employee at this exact store. Many of my students have come to me disheartened because the people at the store were rude and convinced them that they cannot buy Lead White because it's toxic. Obviously flake white and cremnitz are both lead white (PW1)Basic lead carbonate. I personally went to the store only to be greeted by a annoyed, rude and condescending clerk. I live closer to the Cambridge store but recently started driving to the Boston store because of they have a bigger selection and really knowledgeable and friendly staff. Jermain and Kenzie Clearly love their job and love to help budding artist both of recommended colors or brushes that I wouldn't of thought to get and alerted me about good products on sale. Wow. It's huge. And has a lot of fun art supplies... No real fountain pens or inks, but lots of papers, journals, paints, etc. I wish the staff were a little nicer, but they're okay, if a bit hands-off/unhelpful. - I had to buy the last sheet of blotter paper with foot prints on it! If you have a seemingly impossible framing challenge, go see Ashley at the framing counter. This girl has an eye for color, sizing, placement, layout, art, composition--everything. I went in with a broken antique frame, an 8x10 B&W photo, and a dream. And 20 minutes later, I walked out with a show stopper. She made magic. And beyond that, MUCH better pricing than the framing stores in Back Bay. Couldn't have asked for better customer service, pricing, or end results. read more

It is a haven for creativity! I bought my first crochet supplies from here and the yarn was so cheap! Granted their collection is a little small for some of the things, but they do have a lot of nifty goodies to spark ones creativity. I was also very impressed with their collection of hand-made paper. Really beautiful! Unlike some of the experiences pointed in the other reviews, my interaction with the staff has been quite positive. I was once looking for some more of the yarn that I had previously bought and did not know the name of the color at all. The girl who was helping me went through their inventory to see if it was in their storage area and even volunteered to get some more for me from there. Unfortunately, they had run out of that shade so she did not have to take the trouble. Anyway, the bottom line is that they have always been helpful to me. Also, they offer free membership to students and teachers (I think) which qualifies you for some discounts. Very helpful! I actually like this place better than the larger chain stores like AC Moore or Micheal's. read more

Although a little pricey, they do student discounts and have really high quality products, so I don't mind paying that little bit more. I came into the store to say hello to a friend I know who works there as well as bu some art supplies. I came in and had the manager watching me while I greeted my friend. She proceeded to tell me not to come in and speak to her employees. Which I found very rude. Who tells their customers to not come in and converse with their employees? I got my foam boards custom cut today, and the woman who helped me provided INCREDIBLE service. She sat down with my list of materials in hand and drew out every single dimension I needed (and there was a ton, i felt so bad), making sure that I got the best price for everything I needed because she knew I was a student with limited budget. She then did everything herself, labeling the products meticulously after the cuts, and then packing it up nicely at the end. I was really worried about my project in the beginning coming to the store, because of all the moving parts, but she really took the time to help me, all with a smile on her face. I love this art store but some of the staff members are inappropriate. I went in to purchase paint markers which are behind a locked display. The staff member unlocked the display and continued to stand over me for several minutes the whole time I was trying to decide which colors I was going to purchase. As I was walking away from the case he mentioned something about keeping them safe. I understand there are some people that steal but the guilty until proven innocent approach is not the way to go. You should never make a customer feel like you are treating them as if they are going to steal something. The display is in a location where the person at the cash register can see them clearly. There was just no need to stand over the customer watching them. read more

They have a pretty good selection of standard artist equipment; but nothing really amazing (i do like the coptic pens they sell...); they had such potential! I now go there only when I desperately need an item, and Pearl is just a little bit further than I want to go. The staff has very little interest in offering help (unless it's condescending- implying that you might be up to no good- a t-shirt and short is treated the same as one in a suit). Everything is pretty much clean- i've found a few notebooks that had a few pages that had been scribbled in; and a few pens that were nearly empty when I bought them (take them from the bottom of the pile, or ask them for a fresh box to be opened). **It used to be a decent place to browse around while waiting for a movie but now... the staff has become so rude, it isn't worth going in. I walked in, dressed nicely, and they asked me to check my briefcase! I found it pretty insulting. It falls into the realm of them assuming that you are going to steal- i keep my computer and hard copy work, i'm not letting it just sit at a counter; where they take no responsibility if it's lost or damaged. They need to change this policy or they will continue to lose customers.** (i would have given this store a higher rating except for customer service ::other:: -parking (they validate) -an office supply shop around the corner -make sure to check everything before buying it -student discount -they do make you put your bag behind the counter -the prices aren't horrible, but most of the products are pretty much entry level. read more

I'm thankful for the student discount and an amazing array of supplies but not necessarily with the service. It's a hit or miss situation. Last time I was there I was looking for paint pens. As I stared at an seemingly endless supply of pens and markers I asked an employee to point me in the right direction. He blurted out 2 brands both were not what I was looking for. I noticed that the ones I wanted were in a locked case. Man, oh man it was like I was asking the same employee to sign up for a voluntary root canal. There have been other visits with knowledgeable, attentive staff. Enjoy the service roulette game and whatever art supplies you are looking to buy. read more

Warning: The parking rates have gone up a lot since the store opened and the validation with purchase hardly helps. It is impossible to run in and out with free parking anymore because that has been reduced to less than 10 minutes. That is impossible. The lines are so long in the store that today it cost me $9 (validated) to park. That is insane. I only bought frames and mats and did not go anywhere else. Never again! If you are going to be the only name in Boston at least open a convenient location! read more

The people who are complaining about parking are idiots. It's in the middle of a busy city area. If you don't like the parking rates find street parking and pay a meeter or take the t. The parking garage is a luxury--- that's what your paying for. The store itself is chock full of fine art supplies and fun craftier items (though they are not a true craft store). The staff does the best they can with the massive space and the amount of people per shift. When ever I'm there multiple people ask me if I need help and they almost always greet me at the door. This is the best and biggest Boston blick. Stop complaining, do your own research, know what you want and they will always help you find it. I am a fan. read more

Repeat-I can be pretty stingy with the 5 stars when I want. But here lies in my opinion the best art supply chain store around and Ishould have some idea, considering I've been in so many. This Fenway location also seems to be one of the best in the area. It's well organized, staff are generally decent and helpful and there's something in there for everyone- hobby craft making enthusiasts, kids, students, and professional artists. Prices are good and if you're a frequent customer you can get a discount card like you can with the grocery store, department stores, etc. I have yet to come in there and not be able to find what I need when necessary. read more

I was in a rush to beat the 11 minute parking lot timer and I knew exactly what I needed: 5 small embroidery hoops for a crafting project/gifts. I got in and found only cheap plastic hoops but went to the counter to purchase them anyway. The woman behind the counter rang me up and then took a phone call and told me "I'll get your receipt to you after I answer this call". I couldn't wait. Unfortunately, I wish I would have and just paid the parking fee because I spent $15 and only 2 of the embroidery hoops had a tightening piece (that without it renders the hoop useless). A waste of $15 and a pain in the neck parking experience pretty much ensures I won't be back any time soon. read more

Could have more for projects. One package of gold leaf available that my husband picked up and it's not even the good kind! The gold leaf sticks to the packaging in this type of product unlike other Mona Lisa gilding books making this project not only stalled due to lack of gold leafing products available as well as a defective product! I like this place. I like this place more with my student discount card, although I am not a student. Being an artsy-crafty person and not an artist, per say, I am disappointed with their selection of paper. Being someone who knows a good amount about what is required for other types of work--painting, sculpture, etc--I am impressed by how moderately priced things are in comparison to other places. I could go in and get lost in this store. There's so much to look at!! A great place for canvas, paper, paint, pens... everything art related. I've purchased many presentation binders at this location... they always have exactly what I'm looking for! Also a cute selection of notebooks, accessories, portfolio books and even wrapping paper. A little pricey, but I know they give out student discounts. I unfortunately was not a student when I shopped here. Staff is quite helpful. When I step in to Blick I always take a deep breath. The smell of the store is mildly intoxicating. It's the smell of supplies, of paper and canvas and pencils. It's the smell of potential. I go in here frequently enough that the staff recognizes me. Maybe that's why I've never had a customer service problem. Art stores sort of make a business out of overcharging artists for supplies they could get elsewhere for much cheaper or make themselves, but some things you can really only get here, like the magnificently heavy Alvin mechanical pencils, and the discount they offer to students and teachers really pays off, especially considering you don't have to be an art student or teacher to get it. Blick focuses heavily on the 2D side of things. Paint and brushes takes up maybe a third of the store. Markers also have considerable floor space. Their decorative paper selection may not match Paper Source, but they have a decent amount. 3D supplies are less well represented, but they do have clay, cement, plaster and moulage. They even have a little bit of metal and wood there. Really though if you're looking for something serious you'll probably have to go to a hardware store. read more

I was thrilled to find an art store so close to Kenmore. I hadn't been in this area in several months. The manager (?) was very helpful as I was specific in the acrylic and watercolor painting items. I picked up a few other items to purchase as well. I was not surprised at all to find a line at the cash wrap as this is a college town and I'm sure they do a great deal of walk-in business. There were 2 registers open, and I was relieved when I was 'next' in line. As the cashier called out, 'Next!' I quickly walked over and a woman behind me ran over and dropped her items on the counter. I was surprised the cashier didn't say anything. I stepped back and took thought, maybe the cashier didn't see me. Then, clearly, with my arms full, the only other cashier said, 'I can help the next person!" I went over with my arms full and again, another customer dropped her items to be purchased. This time, I said, "I think I'm next." I was ignored. I said, I thought people were supposed to be kind. This isn't kind. I was here waiting." Neither cashier said a word. I couldn't believe it! May not seem like a big deal to someone else. Be kind, people. That's all I ask. I have mixed feelings about this Blick. They have great supplies, although their craft section is lacking (not really what I'm upset about, though I wish they had more of that). A little bit overpriced for me, because I know I can get the same supplies for cheaper elsewhere. My biggest complaint is their customer service. I had to return a few items, because I was only living in Boston for the summer and didn't get the chance to finish a project before I was leaving. They gave me SUCH attitude about this. Even when I wasn't in the store for a return, they were rude. Great customer service starts a simple smile and a nice tone of voice, you don't have to be jumping up and down with enthusiasm to be nice. They need to work on this. This is where I go for all my artisan needs. From vellum to fine papers, from gauche to conte crayons, this is my haven with reasonable prices. The associates here are very knowledgeable and will tell you the truth on what to get. They usually ask a series of questions to get you the right product and even with an art background, I always ask for their advice. It's located near the Kenmore/Fenway stop and there is parking adjacent at landmark center (the store validates!). They have also a large kid section so to keep your kids occupied or to get your kids inspired. The aisles are always clean and neatly organized, they are always restocking which is awesome! Neat freak right here! You can't leave this store without spending more than 50 bones! read more

i hate pearl & utretch is too expensive with that said, i find this art store quite nice. this is one of the only places i applaude big corperations. i think the more they make of these, the cheeper the prices will be... Blick also offers tons of coupons and will honor other stores coups in their stores too! so along with the discounts that makes thier prices reasonable. they have a great on site selection and u can always order online if they dont have it. :o) read more

This store was extremely helpful. I called last minute days before my wedding to help with a DIY sign. The sales associate Red was unbelievably helpful. He assisted me with adding a decal onto this mirror I had. I honestly wouldn't have been able to figure it out on my own.
