The waves were pretty strong, but people were still in the water. The beach was packed, especially when we left around 2:30. We would return, but still prefer Casperson beach while in Venice.

I was warned it would be hard to find parking, but we lucked out. We walked to the part of the beach we wanted then stepped on the sand. In our sandals. The sand was so hot. Not a little hot so just keep moving and you will be fine. It was so hot that two of the kids refused to run across the sand the 15 feet to the water. I was surprised none of us had blisters from the hot sand touching our feet. Somehow we made it to the water and all rejoiced in the cool water soothing our skin. Once we all started feeling better, we walked down to a part of the beach that was not as populated and set up camp. After an hour of swimming, we started looking for sharks teeth. Venice Fishing Pier This pier is kin of cool. It has a bait…read moreshop, Fish Cleaning Stations, Fishing Rod Holders, and Benches throughout the Pier. This Pier had some work done it after the hurricanes and its safe and easy to walk on. It's free to walk out on it and the views are spectacular. While we were out on it, we saw a Dolphin playing in the surf. This pier is a great place for pictures, and we took plenty of then. One end of this pier starts at Sharky's Restaurant and ends with lots of Fishing spots. You can walk from one end to the other easily. Make sure you take a walk out on this pier just for pics. They also have a bathrooms in the parking lot and outdoor showers to rinse off. The beach is nice, but the sand is pretty rough and filled with broken shells. The fishing pier is just a pier where you can walk out and fish if you want. There is a little stand that sells bait, snacks, and souvenirs. Overall a nice place to check out for shark teeth and shells.

The Gulf and harbor views are gorgeous and inviting. The path is flat once you navigate the two draw bridges. It takes you along a shaded trail where you can see armadillo and colorful iguana and lots of birds from ospreys in nests to egrets, herons, ibis and maybe an eagle. Stop and enjoy some island shopping, drinking and eating in the village of Boca Grande. Or ride straight through to the Gasparilla Island State Park and see more of the shoreline and lighthouse. Keep to your side if the trail ad you will be sharing the pavement with electric carts, which are abundant on the island. Dogs welcomed on trail, too.

I'm told it has an attraction for those who don't like to go to the beach then turn around to see a wall of Condominiums staring them in the face. The State Park there is worth a visit $3 parking) and the principle form of local transportation is Golf Carts even though you can arrive by gas powered iron horse...for now. Should you arrive by private jet, the former Rotonda International Airport (now hailing as Coral Creek Airport) is just a short jaunt down the road. Very low profile.

It's mostly soft white sand with some shelly areas, which are great for shelling and looking for shark teeth. The blue green water is very clear and serene. For your convenience, they have plenty of free parking, clean bathrooms, and a concession serving hot dogs, burgers, cheesesteaks, ice cream, and beverages. Less than a 1.5 hr drive from Tampa, making it a nice day or weekend trip.
