Well, according to the Arizona Attorney General, that is defined and considered consumer fraud by being deceptive and unfair and a misrepresentation by a seller. The employee(s) failed to inform us of their policy at the time of the transaction. The AAG has the ability to investigate unfair and deceptive business practices. Despite being a loyal customer, I have consistently felt unwelcome. I've often had staff follow me around the store, repeatedly asking if I want items placed at the counter as if I were stealing. I chose to ignore it in the past, but this last experience crossed the line. When my husband and I approached the counter, the owner made a comment along the lines of needing to "look at us first to make sure nothing was different," which felt extremely insulting. Still, I brushed it off. Then came the checkout. I was initially told my total was $899 for a small number of items, even though there was a buy-one-get-one 50% off sale. After questioning it, she admitted she wasn't sure and recalculated it down to around $700. After that, she asked for my ID to match my card which had never been required before and then proceeded to start writing down my personal information, including my address, birthdate, and driver's license number. That is where I drew the line. I took my card and ID back and declined the purchase. At no point was there a reasonable explanation given just behavior that made me feel singled out and uncomfortable. As a person of color, this experience felt especially targeted. For Christmas Eve, there were a fair amount of last minute shoppers, but not too busy. They had all the cash registers working, so the line moved fast. This is our first time in this store and we found that they had a great stock of branded shoes at a great price! The rest of the store seemed well stocked for being Christmas Eve, so either they were well prepared or there hasn't been many shoppers. The store also seems pretty clean and organized and there were plenty of employees keeping clothes and rearranging the shoes. My son picked up a pair of Nike AirMax TW shoes for $64.99 ($160 at Nike) and the belt that he needed. I saw a pair of Hoka Hiking Shoe for $99.99 ($170 at Hoka) and a pair of Altra running shoe for $49.99 ($130 at Altra). I have never seen Hoka and Altra sold at Ross Stores in California. We may have to come back after Christmas to do more shopping before our vacation ends.
