The WORST!!!! H&R Block miscalculated the $$$ owed on my Fed & State Taxes!!! I received letters & PENALTY from the IRS & MA Dept of Revenue. I called them about the 100% Guarantee and the Agent hung up. I later spoke to another agent who said H&R Block ESTIMATES the taxes and penalties owed. WHAT? !?!? If I wanted an estimate, I would have hired an organ-grinding monkey, not a tax professional! I rarely write reviews frankly because I'm too lazy/busy. I'm only writing this because no one deserves the RUDE customer service and the inept tax preparation services. MISCALCULATED TAXES This was the first time I used H&R Block to prepare my taxes. I hired a tax professional because I wanted to be sure my business taxes and any penalties were calculated correctly. Imagine my surprise when I received letters from the State and Federal government because H&R miscalculated taxes owed. Thanks to H&R Block, I ended up owing a penalty and interest. Epic fail! Below are two examples of their RUDE SERVICE. AGENT NO SHOW and TWO WEEKS RADIO SILENCE Maybe it was an indication of the bad service I would receive from H&R Block when the agent was a no-show at our first appointment. To be fair (sarcasm), HR Block sent me an appointment email confirmation and required/received an $85 appointment fee from me in advance. When I arrived at the appointment, I was told I could leave my tax documents, and my case was assigned to another agent. I emailed the new agent to confirm receipt of my file and ask if she had any questions---only after two weeks did she respond. AGENT YELLED, "I'M WORKING UNTIL 2 AM!!!!!" I empathize with the enormous workload agents have during tax season but.....my agent was literally yelling at me on the phone. In the hopes of getting her to speak more calmly, I had to interrupt her and ask "Why are you yelling at me?". She told me she had been working until 2 AM for days to complete all the work she was assigned. #overworked #badboss #stopyellingatme I could go on but I think this will do. Well, it's that time again... I know that people are encouraged to go to Turbo Tax and do their own taxes but I've been going to my local H&R Block office for about three years now. (That would be in Belmont, MA off Trapelo Road.) Between always having some sort of confusion with holding more than one job or going to school, or oh I don't know...becoming unemployed I've taken the easy, but costly, way out and had someone deal with my tax issues. Personally, I probably would not have known to put in that I have an EZ Pass transponder, who knew you could potentially get money back for that! I digress, I've been going to the same person for about three years now, James Cassidy. He's always done a great job and made sure I get as much money back as possible. I know taxes are no fun but I gotta tell ya, getting back anything is pretty fantastic, especially when you are putting all your bets on this in order to pay off your credit cards and student bills! So I have to say, today has been a pretty lucrative day for yours truly! So...let's review... 1. If you are lazy like me about your taxes then go to H&R Block. 2. If you happen to live in or around Belmont I would highly recommend James Cassidy. I'm sure anyone in the Belmont office is great but I have only interacted with him. 3. As a long time customer, I was very concerned to see the 2 negative reviews for Spring, 2015. I spoke with the new manager, Edward Yee, looking for an explanation. (I worked with Mr. Yee at the Belmont location in 2014, when he was the manager, and then in 2015, when he was the manager of the Newton office.) He had seen the reviews in 2015 and had taken action to correct this. I also looked at their specific office website and found positive reviews for 2016. Personally, I have been fortunate to work with Mr. Yee for 3 years, and he continues to help me save money and fund my retirement. (Please see 2014 review.) Further positive news - this office has rebranded as "Block Advisors", a part of H&R Block, and is now open year-round, with an expanded mission to advise clients in how to lower their taxes in addition to preparing individual and small business returns. read more

Wow. I've been filing on H&R block online for years and I had a few questions about claiming education credits. I had an appointment with Maria Lawcewicz and boy was she nasty. I mean really she should not be allowed around other people. This lady has a "I don't want to be here or work" attitude right off the bat. She seems confused about me having an appointment with her and then lies and says "well you're early anyways you can wait longer". It was exactly the time of my appointment so that was a lie. Then she comes back when she feels like it and says we don't go in the offices so starts talking to me about my tax issues in the lobby with other people. lol. Okay... So she has this nasty attitude barking "so why are you here?!" I'm not kidding this is how she is and the lady at the front desk ignores this behavior and the other patron in the waiting room gives a horrified look at this nasty woman. She's yelling "I need your tax returns! I need to see your tax returns! I tell her again they're online. And she keeps yelling about how she can't access my h and r block account on her system??? Um what? H&R block cannot access people's tax accounts with them? Well according to her she cannot b/c it's a different system. Lol she clearly doesn't have common sense, like I can just get on your computer and log in. I also don't know why she can't answer my questions I have, which she won't even allow me to ask she just keeps barking things it was so ridiculous she clearly cannot be trusted with anything. And she says it's going to be at least $100. And I said to talk to H&R block clients it costs $100? "And she say's yes!" And she keeps whining through her mask, and then mumbling like I can hear what she's saying. I said I think they would've mentioned that on the phone that it's a $100 consult. (Also someone who is a tax lawyer I was emailing with prior told me right before I went in for my apt that H&R block will consult with their clients for free (they know b/c they used to work there) so again she's lying. Which I just needed some questions to be answered. She was so awful I had to leave, if someone does not want to do their job in customer service I'm not going to burden them with actually working. And plus who would allow someone like her to advice them, something is clearly off, she's very miserable and I wish her the best and to get help because she's probably suffering on the inside but you still can't spread negativity and be toxic like that. And I can get my questions answered elsewhere or by talking to someone else who has common sense at H&R block but the reason why I am writing this is because I fear for the other people who may end up having an appointment with Maria Lawcewicz. Many people come to tax preparers for tax help for all different kinds of reasons ranging in severity and a lot of the time they have deadlines to get their tax info in and they need clear and concise advice from people who are there to actually work. I think about the people who don't have other resources or ways to get help (especially older people who don't always have family members to help them) and would like to be able to rely on the tax company they use to actually do their job. Messing with peoples lives is not funny and that is what makes me truly disgusted. She is completely unprofessional, unpleasant to say the least, outrageously rude, and bitter. The H&R Block on Trapelo Road in Belmont was my first experience using an H&R Block and it is sure to be my last. My main reason for using H&R Block this year, instead of Turbo Tax, was that I had spent half of the year in Pennsylvania before permanently moving to Massachusetts. I though since I had to file for two separate states this year, I should best leave it to the professionals. When I had initially made my appointment, the friendly women at the front desk reminded me to bring my tax return from last year so that H&R Block could double check to see if they could get me any additional money, and I was happy to oblige. When I arrived for my appointment, the man who was handling my return was very friendly. I gave him all my information for the tax year 2011 and along with my tax information from 2010 so that he could review it. Everything seemed to be going along swimmingly until we came to the end of the appointment and I informed that I owed approximately $700 to the federal government. I was stunned. I asked the H&R Block representative to explain to me how this could be, since I have never owed money to the federal government before. He went through the return with me based on the information that he pulled from my W-2's, and basically told me that this is what the computer program he was using told him that I owed. Needless to say, this was not a good enough answer for me. I asked him to please check everything again, but he still came to same conclusion, and then gave me directions on how to set up a payment plan with the federal governement. After I arrived home and was clearly upset with the result, I had my fiance (who doesn't claim to be a "Tax Expert") look at a copy of the Tax Return. He immediately found the mistake that H&R Block had made. They had used one of my W-2's from 2010 instead of my 2011 W-2 from my Pennsylvania Employer. Needless to say, since they used the 2010 W-2 instead of the 2011 W-2 the tax return was stating that in 4 month's of employment in Pennsylvania I had made upwards of $20,000 and since I had not paid enough taxes on the $20,000, that was why I owed so much money to the federal government. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. I immediately called H&R Block back to let them know that they had made a mistake. The person UI spoke to on the phone was reluctant to admit that they, as the "Tax Experts," could have made a mistake, and proceeded to ask me, in a very condescending manner, where I thought they had made the mistake. I told him, and he stated he would have to get back to me. I did not receive a call back until the next day when he "supposedly" located my tax return. He went through it and found that they did make the error and had attached a 2010 W-2 instead of the 2011 W-2. There was no apology for this error, he just asked if I would like to set up another appointment to have my taxes amended, which I did set up for their only open time which was a week later at 8:00 p.m. When I arrived in for this appointment, I thought it was only prudent that I bring my "non-tax-expert" fiance with me so that he could make sure everything looked right. I arrived for the appointment, it took them at least 10 minutes to realize that I actually did have an appointment, and who it was scheduled with, before we sat down to make any changes. This time I was paired with the head of this H&R Block Branch to have my taxes amended. We went through all the tax information again, (keep in mind I have a simple tax return, not a multimillion dollar estate), and by the end of the amended tax return I went from owing about $700 to the federal government to receiving about $1,265.00. As I was signing this amended return, my fiance noticed that they had once again made a mistake. The return showed that I had already paid the $700.00 to the government and that they would be refunding me back. Again, when we pointed this out, they acted dumbfounded. After they finally realized their mistake, I made sure that they wouldn't mail out this copy, but they stated that it had to mailed because this was supposedly correct according to the computer programs calculations and that the federal government should catch the error and refund me the correct amount. I was livid that they wouldn't fix it, but they didn't seem to want to take the time to fix it. Next, they tried to tell me that I still owed money to the state of Pennsylvania, because I supposedly hadn't. Again, I showed this to my non-tax expert fiance, and when you look at the W-2 it should that I owed $189.00 in taxes and towards the bottom, it showed that $189.00 was taken out for tax purposes by my employer and I owed nothing. I made a third trip back to my favorite H&R Block, and was beyond livid. There are no zero stars so I'll use only one. Incompetent employees which I had to guide trough to do a proper return for a Sole proprietorship. Their mistake almost costed me 1,000$ in deductions. They gave me an initial quote of 300$ and I end up paying 670$ even they had to rush it and finish cause they had another appointment. So they use the same 1 hr time for a 200$ tax return than a 670$? It get worse. For almost a month I've been trying to get a digital copy of the taxes as you will have with Turbo-tax and many others. They tell me that of course they do it online. I register, look for my name data etc, and nothing is there about me. If you want a copy you can stop by, they say. Great I live now in NC, how do I do it? The manager even worse, un-polity, un-preocupied at all, when he sees no where to hide, he ask me to call another place. Inconpetent!!! my taxes are in your location. The guy who did the taxes is called Ryan, barely knew how to use the computer or spelling, which he had quite a few mistakes in my taxes. My English is even better and I've been in the country only for 2 years. I wish I could have my money back, now I'm still trying to get the Better Businesses Bureau to make it happen. read more

The ineptitude of the tax preparer I worked with at this H&R Block was staggering, I mean really surprising and disappointing. I decided to try out H&R Block for the first time and was amazed that the tax preparer I saw, whom had 20 year of experience according to their website, barely knew Massachusetts tax law. I've started this year tax return prep late, and decided to make a trip to H&R Block instead of getting a headache myself. I was able to schedule an app the same day with Mr Edward Yee. He was just fabulous: answered all my questions, found more deduction that I was able to, he was very friendly and very professional at the same time. My husband normally does our taxes himself but had some trouble this year. He went to see Edward Yee at H & R Block and I'm so happy he did. Mr. Yee was extremely helpful and enlightening; we're actually getting a refund this year! He answered all of my husband's questions and then some. Called to ask about their consulting fee, minimum charges and general procedure - if we have some tax-related questions but don't want to file our taxes through them, is that possible, etc. However, the lady on the phone was extremely rude. She kept repeating - "there is no one here to answer your questions". When I asked if I could call back later, she said its something to effect of its unlikely anyone is going to be able to talk to me. So much for customer service. read more

DO NOT GO HERE FOR TAX PREPARATION SERVICES. I made an appointment on line and met with someone at their office on a Friday morning. I explained that I needed 1 year of back taxes done and the return would be an extremely simple one. The gentleman answered all my questions and said he could help me out and would have it done by Monday, three times during our meeting he quoted me the same price of $180. I received a message late Monday morning that the taxes were done but the cost is now $425!! I called back as soon as I could and was given the terse excuse, 'I made a mistake there's nothing I can do'. I asked to speak to the manager who called me back more than an hour later, his excuse was we don't give price quotes before hand, when I explained to him that's not what happened in this case and the gentleman admitted to him quoting me that price, he only arrogantly stuck to the same excuse. When I asked who his manager was he said he would call the district mgr. who supposedly was willing to offer me 10% off the $425. I immediately went down to pick up my paper work where my discussion with Mr. Yee the manager of this office continued, during our discussion the gentleman I dealt with stood there admitted to what happened and apologized yet Mr. Yee continued to refuse to recognize what truly happened. His level of arrogance if not ignorance was appalling. Ultimately we all make our own choices, I could not feel stronger that this is not the right choice for anyone. At another place less than 3 miles away I was able to get done exactly what I needed, it took less than an hour and I was charged $95. Shame on you Block Advisors Trapelo rd Belmont!! read more
