If you're anywhere in between, I would recommend looking elsewhere. I was reluctant to write this review because Chuck actually seems like a nice guy who probably got some bad advice from a business magazine in 1987 and took it as gospel--the advice being something along the lines of focusing on wealthy people or people who can do the most for you in return and not wasting much time on the "small folk". That may have worked 25 years ago, but isn't a great philosophy in the Internet age where everyone has a voice. I made an appointment to file my annual taxes with Chuck at least a month and a half before the April 15th deadline. The appointment went pretty well for the most part. He seemed friendly enough and confident in his abilities. My return had a small handful of complications that made it a bit more involved than a basic filing, but nothing earth shattering. There were about 3 or 4 things Chuck needed to research how to file before we finalized the return. That is totally fine. Tax law is complicated and I don't expect professionals to have all of the answers offhand. He told me we could leave things 98% complete and he would figure out how to tie up the loose ends later and confirm with me once everything was complete. He offered to let me pay when the taxes were filed, but I opted to pay on the spot. I'm not sure if this had any impact on what transpired next. It started off normal at first. Chuck would call me to check in every two days or so to inform me of his progress on closing out the open items on my filing. Then he began to go dark on me. I started having to call him for updates. He was not apologetic at all--he was actually frustrated that I was bothering him by checking in on a service that I paid for but didn't receive. He told me his methodology is as follows: for every filing he can't complete on the spot, he puts it into a pile towards the back of his office. When he has downtime, he works on the outstanding items in order from "most important client" to "least important client". These are his words, not mine. As you may have guessed, I was a very low priority/low income client to him and he made that very clear numerous times. To make a long story short(er), I went through a series of very painful emails, phone calls and in-person visits with Chuck to get my filing pushed through. The weaker I was on the phone, the more he tried to bully me, but once I started to (mildly) berate him a bit, he seems to regain some sense and started to act. Some people to respond better to scolding than gentle pushing, and Chuck seems to be one of those guys unfortunately. Chuck literally dragged this out until the 11th hour. Even though my appointment was relatively early in tax season, I had to go to his office the day of the deadline to ensure he filed it. And I had to take the initiative to show up--he certainly didn't seem that concerned about it (after all, I make peanuts--why would the IRS care about me?). Look I get it. People make mistakes. People are busy. People don't have all the answers. But what makes it worse in Chuck's case is that he was never apologetic about it for one second. There was never a "sorry you had to chase me down for the last 6+ weeks" or a "I swear, the service here is much better than this". I just felt like I was bothering him the whole time. I really wanted to like Chuck and there were many times I would look at him and see the "good guy" in him. I don't think his accounting skills are inadequate or that he was out to get me. But unfortunately for him, you can't put someone through what he put me through and be considered "good at your job". One star.

I've been using him for about 8 years. Over the years, I've found him to be extremely responsive in communication. Anytime I have a tax question, I email him, and he gets back to me within a couple hours. He also is very personable. My wife and I have some laughs with him every year when we see him. Bill is also really good with independent contractors. I'm a real estate agent myself. He had very helpful tax strategies, such as setting up an S Corp for my business that I never would have thought of. I've also reached out to him with tax questions for my clients and he is always incredibly generous with his time. There are not many people within any industry that I recommend as enthusiastically as I do for Bill. Do yourself a favor and call him -- You will not regret it!

However, 2012 was a crazy year for us as we re-located from NJ back home to MA, changed jobs, rolled over a 401K and had multiple stock sales. So like every recent year, we bought TT again this year and were basically satisfied with the answers, although we owed $4100 to the IRS and $681 to MA we were getting $3990 back from NJ. That seemed reasonable given the income from last year. Still we wanted to double check our work on TT and we also wanted to establish a relationship with an accountant who could also provide advice going forward as to how to best position ourselves for next years taxes. My wife and I are almost 50 so we also were also looking for someone to validate the positions we had taken financially to prepare for retirement. We found Bill on Yelp and even though we live in Boston where there were other five star rated accountants, we liked the fact that he was praised for both his tax services and his financial advice. Also, he was noted as having a friendly and easy going personality (Which some of the other five star accountants defiantly did not have according to their reviews). We didn't want to start off a potential long term relationship with any one who was a dick, no matter how brilliant. Bill has a nice location in an office park in Quincy off Willard Street. We arrived on time and so did he. We liked Bill immediately as he was engaging and friendly and not stuffy at all. He even had Red Sox World Series memorabilia on his walls which immediately signaled to me that he was A NORMAL PERSON. Anyways, Bill found that we had made a mistake on TT by erroneously listing our stock sales. As far as TT was concerned, no red flags popped up because the error was inputted incorrectly by us. TT didn't know and we didn't know either, but Bill knew. The error would have been costly. Instead of the figures above, it turned out that we actually only owed the IRS $798! Our NJ refund was increased by over $200 and our debt to MA turned into a refund of almost $200. All tolled, Bill saved us almost $4500. After his fee of $275, we still saved well over $4000. We obviously enjoyed our first meeting and will schedule another more comprehensive meeting to evaluate our goals and current positions after the tax season ends and Bill is less busy. Bottom line here is that Turbo Tax is a great product, but nothing beats discussing your tax obligations with a human being. We would HIGHLY recommend Bill Ryan to anyone looking for an exceptionally competent accountant/financial planner in the Metro South or even in the Boston metropolitan area. THANKS BILL!

Sent the partner my previous turbo tax file (per request) and then asked two questions regarding my tax situation. One question answered, another not, but it did not matter because I figured once the actual tax prep began I can get all the information. Get a bill a few weeks later for $400 for "emails". Yeah, brutal. Turns out that answering two questions and going over some papers will run you four hundred bucks. Naturally, I resisted as that is crazy. So he offered a discount to $300, but that was still too much. I am being charged for emails what people pay for basic tax returns? Mind you at no point whatsoever do you get warned or that you are on the clock. Few months later collector comes knocking, I explain the situation and seemingly everything is quiet. Nope, they sue me in small claims. I figured why not, there is no way this is reasonable. Feels like a giant firm fleecing the small guy. Court will surely rule in my favor. I was rushed into signing the approval documentation without even being told the amount I would be paying to the IRS or their business and was left taking a hit of 6k unexpectedly less then 24 hours later without any option for a payment plan, disclosure on the amount etc- they told me there was nothing they could do to stop the charge and apologized profusely. They accepted blame for the situation and admitted that the service I got was unacceptable and when I asked for my money back- as ANYONE WOULD when being given awful service, I was ghosted for two weeks before being told "I got the service I paid for" which was no communication, poor management, them admitting wrong in the situation and stress. I felt like I had to follow up with them to do their job and I paid them $300 to just be put in a stressful situation.
