This is my first year working with Steve Trojan and his company Flat Iron Advisors. I am actually…read morein the same business as Steve but specialize in another area. My taxes are somewhat complex with a trust, an S corporation, a separate LLC for property rentals, and several outside investments. Steve has been able to work well with my monthly bookkeeper and successfully handle my taxes. I can recommend to anybody who has a small business or complex personal returns that Steve is more than qualified to complete you tax work and help with planning.

I had a good experience with Flatirons Advisors in 2024, but I'm updating my review because my 2025…read moreexperience was very negative and I can no longer recommend them. I have complicated crypto taxes and did my best to communicate this from the start, including a 45-minute call with Steve specifically about my crypto taxes before my 2024 return was filed. I made clear that the documents I sent, including a Schedule 1, were generated by my crypto tax software. In 2025, I discovered that the Schedule 1 income I provided had been left off my 2024 return. Steve never asked me what it was, never requested supporting documentation, and never told me he was omitting it. He simply left it off silently. When I raised it, he claimed he hadn't known I had complicated crypto taxes, which I believe is false and I have messages with the firm showing we discussed it. He also declined to prepare my 2025 return due to the crypto complexity, leaving me to find a new preparer on short notice. When I requested a refund of my 2024 prep fee, he refused unless I provided evidence of the income's source. While compiling that, I found that a mistake in my tax software had overstated the figure, and that the corrected amount was lower. I decided the refund wasn't worth pursuing, and I'm having the amendment handled by another firm. Steve was right to question the number. But the professional response was to ask for documentation before filing, not to silently drop income off a return without a word to the client. At no point did he acknowledge any mistake or take any accountability. In my opinion, that handling was not what a client should expect from a tax preparer, and based on my experience, I can't recommend them.

We were clients of Kingsbery CPA for approximately 2 years for business bookkeeping, taxes and…read moreother financial services. In addition, I used them personally for my taxes. They were much more expensive than other CPA's we had worked with but we continued to use them hoping the financial investment would pay off. In addition to being overpriced, when we would attempt to discuss our displeasure re: certain mistakes or lack of follow through, we were often given excuses or had the experience of feeling shut down. But sometimes they listened so we stayed. The real breakdown occurred when we became more vocal about our complaints. They refused to listen to us despite our multiple requests for change so that the relationship we had invested tens of thousands of dollars into could continue. When we felt we couldn't receive the level of service we needed from our CPA, Pam Vogel, we asked for a replacement CPA. They not only refused, they (Managing Partner Mary Kay Gondrezick and Pam Vogel) were a bit bullying in their response to the request. We let them know that due to our inability to get our needs met, we felt the relationship would not be able to go forward ultimately but that we'd like to continue services until we could find another firm to handle mission critical elements of our business. In response, they immediately and without notice, refused to continue work on our account. If that's the way you would like your business to be treated, particularly after a multi year relationship, then by all means, have them do your taxes. If you prefer to be treated with consideration, respect and professionalism, I would look elsewhere.

I just posted a Google review about mark and thought I should share my experience on Yelp as well…read more I have been through several accountants over the last few years in boulder and it has been a nightmare. I had lost faith of finding a good accountant until I went to Mark Kightlinger who was amazing. He listened to me and made me feel like he cared. Helped me reorganize my business, lower my taxes and get my books reconciled. He knew a lot about the medical industry taxes which was something I couldn't find anywhere else. The bookkeeper Lisa was also amazing and helped me a to with QuickBooks. I highly recommend them both and they will show you what a great cpa who cares is like. Thanks guys!!

I had 1 personal return with 2 states and received a bill for $995 with no detail, postmarked May 20th but dated April 30th and saying that a late charge will be assessed if not received by the end of the month. I called on May 29th and left a message with the receptionist to get a call back about the bill, but never received a call back. I called back again on June 6th and explained my frustration on getting such a bill and the bill was adjusted down to $700. I am not returning back still as this is the highest I've paid for my taxes. The first version of my return was missing a deduction that we discussed and I said that I would be taking (SEP IRA contribution). Once I spoke to them, they did fix it, but that makes me wonder what else was missed on my return.
