Not only was the whole experience so much fun (I had some anxiety about being in a body of water where I cannot see the bottom), but it was super educational, with some facts about the sandstone cliffs we passed and the animals we encountered. With the cool water and the great company, I forgot all about the heat wave we are having and even saw some seals! Will definitely be back for at least one shorter tour, and maybe even a day trip!

We learned a lot from him and enjoyed spending some time getting to know him. Our guide, Korry, was also excellent. He was also friendly and welcoming and made sure we were well fed and had a good time. There is never a guarantee of finding specific wildlife when you are out in the wild, but Larry and Korry knew the animals behaviors and made sure to stay up to date on recent patterns and updates from all the other local teams in order to give us the best chance to see orcas, humpbacks, eagles, seals, and lots of other wildlife while out kayaking. Even if we didn't see any whales the entire time, it still would have been a great trip. However, we did see lots of orca and humpbacks during our time. They even came right by our island one evening, where we could see them from our dinner table and hear them while sleeping in our tents. I highly recommend going with Larry and Discovery Expeditions. We hope to make another trip in the future.

My daughter (3.5 years old) and I headed out to one of the rock formations where we took a break to explore the tide pools. Then she wanted to stand the whole paddle back! very stable boards and overall a great experience. I think everyone should try it out! They will brief you about the kayaks, safety and where to go. Now, I would select a longer time to truly appreciate Deep Cove's natural beauty when you aren't dodging other kayaks or boats. The traffic can be somewhat chaotic in the summer time and it is main area for a lot of boaters heading out of the cove. We kayak around three islands within our two hour option, but didn't relax as much as we want. Again, the salt water, slight wind, and being in the 80's made it a wonderful but brief time.

Our guides were knowledgeable and got us in and out of our kayak without us getting our feet wet. I didn't give five stars for two reasons. First, the two guides seemed a bit lax, they mostly paddled with us instead of taking lead and sweep positions, despite the fact that two out of the six of us had never kayaked before. They did look back periodically to check on everyone, but it was still strange compared to other kayak tours I've been on. Second, they didn't take pictures of us, other tours I've been on do it as a matter of course and email or post pictures to everyone. Still, this was a very worthwhile experience, and everyone enjoyed the views, the seals we saw in the water, etc., and no one had trouble keeping up despite the wind and the range of both ages and kayaking experience.

The time availability, Golden Hour Tour discount, and Anacortes departure allowed us to narrow our decision. We were very pleased with our three our tour. However, it did not seem like it would work well for beginners as basic skills were needed to paddle and navigate. I never quite got comfortable with the peddles for turning and would have had them a little lower as my feet slipped off a couple times. I could not bend my knees enough to reconnect the peddles for turning on my own. Our guide assisted me which held up the tour though. We were in a tandem which worked well for us as my husband was recovering from surgery. We were covered with a skirt to keep us dry for the most part. Some water did leech in to wet our bathing suit bottoms so we were glad we brought a dry change of clothes at the end. We saw eagles, seals, jumping fish, and other birds. Whales do not come in this close to the main land so we had no expectation. The water was like glass in parts, slightly turbulent in others, and the island shores simply serene. If you stuck close to the guide, he was very knowledgeable.

Different tees make it playable for all length hitters, and the layout will force a variety of shots and use of most clubs in your bag. A full driving range, large putting green, pro shop and restaurant are also available. If you can avoid the busiest times, Lake Padden is worth a play.

They asked if we had any questions or needed help. Since we did not, they just let us do our thing. I liked that. It gets intimidating having people always watching you or floating around if you do not want it. We did see them answering questions and helping people who requested it, so if you are nervous or in need of assistance they will happily help you out. There were also life jackets, wet suits, and even dry bags available for rental in addition to the equipment (canoes, paddle boards, sail boats). You reserve a slot and off you go to launch from their nice ramp, which is also open to the public. I definitely recommend wearing flip flops or water shoes. I am not from the area, so did not know what to expect. It was a bit rocky in some areas so I was glad to not be launching barefoot. The staff we had that day were fantastic. They were very nice and many of them very experienced and helpful. My friend told me they were also all volunteers. They do have a tip jar for their assistance though, so be sure to bring some cash to support them! All around great experience and I highly recommend if you are in the area looking for something fun to do!

Get your cert to bareboat a power or sailboat (they offer combo classes/vacations) or hire an instructor skipper- you won't regret it. The folks at San Juan think of everything, and unlike the global charter conglomerates it's a decades old stand alone Bellingham WA professional boat chartering operation with the principals involved in the day to day guest experience operation-managing a super friendly and over the top customer service oriented staff. They all appear to really like their jobs! They also run these "flotillas" where a pro skipper takes a lead boat with some stateroom guests, plans a whole week or longer itinerary for 10 or so boats to cruise around to anchorages and marinas- in San Juan's plus many go further to Canada overnights. Great way to get introduced to sailing the local waters. You can focus on the navigating and sailing/boating and someone's already got the stops, attractions perfectly planned, plus you meet some great people with you on other boats when you dock up or moor/anchor together. You are likely to see orcas, porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals and otters. Of course bald eagles, herons and all manner of waterfowl. Get your WA shellfish license if you want to drop a pot (on the boats standard) and get some Dungeness crabs to steam up and feast on. I went on one flotilla with furthest stop Princess Luisa Sound two days north of Vancouver (May 2023) whole trip from and back to Bellingham was 10 days. We lucked out with fabulous weather so I'm almost hesitant to tell people about it because it was so incredibly stunning and enjoyable. Secret I probably should keep. All the boats are professionally maintained and the fleet is mostly new or near new and perfectly outfitted for the experience- highly recommend. Full disclosure I own one of the boats (but still a "customer" of the San Juan Sailing experience) basically just a "perfect for me" way to immerse into new sailing grounds (I'm formerly an east coast and Caribbean boater) My wife (who is the consummate fair weather sailor plus food/cocktail steward) and I love the luxe experience of taking our own boat out as "charter guests." No "boat clutter" like used to develop on my old boat. All the cleaning and linens, galley outfitting taken care of. Just show up with food and bev! Fair winds‍

What I really liked was that no one at this facility read the riot act as they were walking us thru the process, which is what my experience with a LOT of boat rental places is... everything was done in a very relaxed manner and everything was explained very nicely We really enjoyed the 4 hour boat ride and did a loop around Waldron Island. Our boat died in the water after about three hours. Nate, Chris and Natalie were there within 15 minutes and helped us get back. They are all SUCH KIND and NICE people, they took care of the issue immediately, put us on a new boat and brought us back meanwhile towed the other boat. Not recommended if you don't have some boating skills, there are some shallow spots, rocks and tidal conditions to be aware of that could turn a fun day sour - but this isn't their fault of course. Overall a very good & fun experience that also felt safe. Seeing the islands from the water and not just from the ferry route is great!
