Had a fun time in Deep Cove. Due to high tourist season, it is best to go online to register and reserve your kayaks. It will save you a lot of time when you pick up your kayak. Prices are pretty reasonable and we chose the two hour option due to our limited time during the sunset period. The staff were busy but friendly and assisted us with our kayaks. They will brief you about the kayaks, safety and where to go. Now, I would select a longer time to truly appreciate Deep Cove's natural beauty when you aren't dodging other kayaks or boats. The traffic can be somewhat chaotic in the summer time and it is main area for a lot of boaters heading out of the cove. We kayak around three islands within our two hour option, but didn't relax as much as we want. Again, the salt water, slight wind, and being in the 80's made it a wonderful but brief time. read more

Great place to kayak, incredible views, definitely worth a visit. Equipment and gear were great and in great shape. Our guides were knowledgeable and got us in and out of our kayak without us getting our feet wet. I didn't give five stars for two reasons. First, the two guides seemed a bit lax, they mostly paddled with us instead of taking lead and sweep positions, despite the fact that two out of the six of us had never kayaked before. They did look back periodically to check on everyone, but it was still strange compared to other kayak tours I've been on. Second, they didn't take pictures of us, other tours I've been on do it as a matter of course and email or post pictures to everyone. Still, this was a very worthwhile experience, and everyone enjoyed the views, the seals we saw in the water, etc., and no one had trouble keeping up despite the wind and the range of both ages and kayaking experience. read more

5 hour kayak tour around the cove. It was great. Tour guide Lauren was very knowledgeable, took enough breaks and let us explore the islands we stopped on. The group had beginners and they did very good thanks Lauren teaching them how to paddle. Coming from SoCal the sea here is very different. Starfish everywhere and vibrant life but not much bigger than a seal and little worries about sharks. Whales are few in between. You can leave belongings in the office, lunch is supplied. Highly recommend for visitors. For experienced kayakers, id do a guided day then suggest a rental and GPS system. read more

Great first experience at this establishment. Online booking was easy, parking was reasonable in a near by lot, staff were friendly and to the point! After a quick in service on how to use the rutters and paddles we were off. Deep Cove is a good spot to get a feel for kayaking as it's pretty calm and gives you a bit of a feel for the open ocean. It's a pretty area with lots of beautiful homes to admire and a lovely shore line. I would recommend starting earlier in the day because the boat action picks up in the later afternoon. I notice it was much more difficult to get back with all the boats making waves. We went for 3hrs which gave us enough time to paddle around a little island and stop for lunch on a nearby beach. $80/3 hrs seems pretty reasonable. They do rentals for over night as well if u have the means to travel with a kayack or if your a more experienced person. There is not a whole lot of storage storage space on the kayaks for an over night camp. There are different sizes tho... I brought a small cooler bag with my lunch, towel and swimsuit stuffed inside and that fit into one of the storage compartments. I also had a water bottle I kept in the kayak with me. There is a second smaller storage in the front of the kayak as well. My friends all wore small backpacks to store their stuff. I suppose if you have campgear for backpacking u might be able to do an overnight kayak camp! Tip... Remember to bring your sunscreen and sunscreen your legs because I got a little burnt thru the kayak on my thighs!! Good times. It's a fun morning or afternoon. read more

Amazing, beautiful place to kayak! Deep Cove is about a 30-minute drive from Vancouver and is nestled within the mountains that surround it. Absolutely stunning views from the small village or the water. I rented a kayak from these guys and set about my first ocean kayaking experience. The staff asks you to fill out a waiver (you can fill out one waiver for a max of 3 people), you then collect your life jacket and 'skirt' then head down to get a kayak. The folk who give you your kayak gave me a quick briefing on the best way to position myself in the kayak, how to paddle, and which direction to head in on that particular day. They were very friendly. Once in the water, I just paddled, headed South and enjoyed the incredible view. Words can't describe it so you'll just have to go and see for yourself :) You have the option of renting a single or double kayak, or if kayaking isn't for you, you can also do SUP (Stand-Up Paddle-boarding). If you're feeling lazy, just bring a blanket and find a spot on the grassy area next to the center - bring a picnic and enjoy. For two hours, it's $40 to rent a kayak. The best time to go is during the week, as weekends are insanely busy - good luck finding parking on those very narrow streets! read more

From the person who took our reservations over the phone, to the clerk store who guided us on what route to take, to the person who fit us into our gear and the person who pulls us out when we come back. Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable. We went on a Friday afternoon and all the Tandem Kayaks were taken in the books, we had originally made rsvps for Singles but she found a tandem for us anyway and then we changed our minds back to single kayaks. She was patient and very nice. Thank you When we hit the water, the scenery was absolutely spectacular. We found lots of starfish and jellyfish following the path she had suggested. This is an easy 5 stars . I called ahead on a Saturday to last minute make sure they had a two person kayak for the last kayak of the day (6 pm ). The person who took my call was friendly And knowledgeable and prebooked my kayak and instantly sent the confirmation . I suggest calling ahead and booking for double kayaks because when we got there they were sold out . They are prompt and knowledgeable. You sign a release and are given a gps and a quick mini lesson and a few tips . They suggest a route for 2 hours and provide an idea of where to go if you are new to the area . We can't wait to go back and do it again as there have been whales seen there this week . The only thing I would suggest is a wet bag for phones . This is a pretty typical setup for recreational rentals. Staff are friendly, but rushed. If you've never been kayaking before you'll want to slow them down and have them take time to show you the ropes. We've been kayaking quite a bit so was not an issue although the kayak we had had a feature that they did not bother to point out to us. The guidance on where to paddle to could be a lot better. It's pretty much "Go out and turn left or turn right". Would be nicer to have a little map to take with you. That being said, the actual experience on the water is definitely worth an afternoon. read more

I definitely recommend coming to Deep Cove for kayaking over Granville Island. Such a beautiful place and you don't have boats trying to run you over. We kayaked to an island, docked and did a little exploring. So nice and can't wait for my friend from the US to experience this next month! Don't forget to make reservations! A must go experience if you are visiting in Vancouver! Very economical and just an experience of the lifetime. Deep Cove and the Indian Arm is truly one of the beautiful places on this planet. There is a minimum 2 hour rental and it is highly recommended to reserve. (it involves giving ur credit card number). Definitely come a half hour before you reservation time because the clock starts at your reservation time which does not include the 20-30 minutes it takes to outfit you and prepare the kayak. So if you booked a 9am appointment, come at 8:30am so you can get outfitted with these price inclusive pieces 1)life jacket with whistle 2)waterproof dresses that hook around the seat of the kayak(with emergency pull handle, because if you capsize the waterproof dress, along with you, stills hook tightly around kayak, so important to pull quickly when capsizing) 3)water squegee, if you kayak somehow has a hole.. 4)and the paddles. We actually came 15 minutes late, but the staff was very nice about it and just moved us an half hour up. It took us nearly one hour to get up to the first checkpoint(we rented a duo for 42 bucks per 2 hours), so we spent the next hour pretty much kayaking back. The area is just beautiful, up to the first checkpoint you still see alot of residential homes hanging on the cliffs, but if you make it past the 2nd checkpoint - you will be suddenly surrounded by the untouched nature itself. I was told that hardcore kayakers make it all the way to the last checkpoint, and lodge overnight and kayak back in the morning. This requires a full day rental. Rentals are instructed to kayak by the shoreline, as small boats utilized the central areas of the cove and the arm. You are allowed to cross, but if you see a boat it is recommended you place your paddles up to show you are not moving as those powered boats move faster than you do. In general, be careful if you are cutting across. Also, if you are using the duo kayak, the steering(left and right direction) is controlled by the person sitting in the back. Make sure you have the pedals adjusted properly (make sure your legs are not straight when you are stepping on the pedal, your legs have to be more of a butterfly stretch while touching pedals) Remember, pressing left pedal means the kayak will go left and right pedal is right. Also make sure you pull the rudder down when departing and bring it back up when returning(so it doesn't hit the rocks) As for getting to Deep Cove, we actually utilized the public transportation which involved taking the Seabus to Londsdale Quay, hopped on a bus to Philbs Exchange, and took a bus that makes Deep Cove it's last stop. Very convenient and took only about 40 minutes. A quicker way from the city is to take a bus from downtown straight to Philbs Exchange, and then transfer for the Deep Cove bus. But we took the Seabus, because we paid for a day pass and wanted to utilize it fully. Overall, this is a must if you are visiting Vancouver. Much better than Grouse Mountain or the Suspension Bridge. For those light and sensitive to sun skin like me, bring suntan lotion! It's a must! If you are bringing personal belongings, leave it in the car. If you don't have a car, there's a public doorless cubby for use, so you can't put a lock to it. However, you can place your bag in the kayak - however - becareful! It can get wet! read more

Deep Cove is beautiful. I've always loved water sports, so kayaking/ canoeing is an annual summer activity for me. Because they have a limited number of kayaks and canoes, I usually call ahead to reserve my boat. If you want a tandem one, then it is highly recommended that you call to book ahead. They have a reasonable cancelation policy-as long as you cancel 24 hours ahead, then they won't charge you. You can rent canoes/kayaks by the hour, or by the day, and even overnight, in case you want to dock somewhere and camp out. Rentals of lifejackets and the paddles are included. They give you a brief lesson on the paddling skills, and how to manuver your boat. Paddling through the Indian Arm, this is the perfect way to spend a sunny weekend. There are multiple places where you can dock-3 hours can get you to Belcarra Park and back. There's something tranquil about being out in the middle of the water, just you, the boat, and nature around you. You never know what you will see on these trips. This year, we saw a whole bunch on seals basking on docks. Then there's all the lovely houses in Deep Cove which makes me so jealous. Deep Cove itself is a little quaint community with shops, and restaurants. You can grab lunch or dinner around here before or after canoeing/ kayaking. I always have a great time. We had a great experience kayaking here for a friends birthday. It was easy to get set up with kayaks and even though there were a few different school groups there we didn't wait long to get in the water. Staff members Cam and Trent were so helpful in getting us organized and comfortable. They gave us tips on where to go, told us the wildlife to look for, and made us feel at ease when we asked questions. As far as the actual kayaking, it was phenomenal. Deep Cove is a perfect little spot to see some mountains and aquatic life. We saw seals hunting, crabs crab-walking, and starfish... starring. It was great! The best! My hubby and I wanted to go kayaking for our anniversary, so I made a reservation with Deep Cove. We showed up early and were immediately outfitted with flotation vests and kayaks, which actually gave us a little extra time on the water. As a heads up: They don't provide sea bags (bags that you can put your personal items like phones and keys in so they don't get wet) for rental - you have to buy them, or you can leave your stuff at the front desk and pick it up after the end of your trip. I opted to buy my own, which wasn't that expensive and now gives me an accessory I can use on future kayaking trips. They set us up with two kayaks, and were super sweet about helping us get into them - and then out of them when my fat ass couldn't fit in the one they originally gave me. They got me a bigger kayak (which I fit into nicely), and off we went! The trip through Deep Cove was awesome, if exhausting. We actually saw a couple of seals, including a pup that I originally thought was a buoy until it turned its head to look at me. So cute! The locale is gorgeous, the prices are reasonable, and the staff are wonderful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone! read more

One of the best ways to experience a full moon is with Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak Centre. Paddle out onto the calm waters of Indian Arm on a night with the full moon and you're sure to be amazed. My girlfriend and I took the tour where we were provided with wet suits and splash skirts to keep us dry. There's so much more to Indian Arm than the view you get from Burnaby Mountain or Barnet Marine Park. Staff were friendly, the equipment is up-to-date, and I would highly recommend this place to all adventure seekers. We have visited several Vancouver attractions during our extended stay in the City. This was by far my favorite day. We booked on line a few days before our visit once we could determine good weather on that Saturday. We booked for a full day since anything over 3 hours was the same price as a full day. We planned to arrive around noon and wanted to reserve until dark if needed. We were able to take a bus from downtown Vancouver (Chinatown) directly to a stop near the Kayak Centre. The staff was friendly and efficient getting us checked in and on our way. We paddled out to Twin Island, pulled in, and ate some lunch we packed. There's 2 dry hatches on each kayak so there's plenty of space to pack a couple of backpacks each if needed. We decided to stop back by Jug Island beach on the way back. The whole trip was about 4-5 hours on the water and about 6 miles of paddling. It was a great day and we enjoyed everything about it. I would recommend this activity to anyone that enjoys a great day in a kayak. read more

Review #20/30 When one mentions the tranquil beauty of Deep Cove, kayaking is, undoubtedly, the number one activity that locals suggest. And I can see why. The waters of the Indian Arm are calm and exploring on a kayak is an easy way to journey into the interesting nooks and crannies, little islands, and see the beauty of nature like I've never before. "Easy" is also quite relative--it might be a piece of cake for athletic folks but for us lazy-to-exercise wannabe kayakers, it was quite a workout. We in fact didn't go very far--just the southern part of the Indian Arm along Belcarra. But a two-hours plus ride was enough for us to relax in the middle of the Burrard Inlet and admire the majestic tree-filled landscape in the background. It was so peaceful. Wildlife was abound in places we least expect. We saw seals popping their head off the surface of the water in close distances, sometimes dipping further to chase a few fish that would jump out like whales in the Pacific Ocean, except this was a smaller scale of it. It was scary at times but we were thrilled to be so close to them. If you look closely, you can also see jellies--in different sizes and colours--floating close enough to the surface that you can see them clearly. Expect to pay around $30-$35 for a single kayak and about $50 for a double tandem. To prevent water splashing into you, ask for a skirt even if they don't ask. You might feel more restricted but at least it keeps you dry. Note that the seats in the kayak were not the most comfortable for a 2-3 hour ride--my back hurt after two hours. An okay-friendly service completed the experience. read more

My girlfriend and I came to Vancouver for a 24 hour trip and we wanted to do two things- the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Deep Cove Kayaking. After we finished up at the bridge we went straight to the Layak Centre. It was easy to find and we were happily greeted by our tour guide Spencer. Spencer gave us a a very comprehensive description on what we will be doing throughout the tour, all the safety instructions, and how to properly enter and exit out fiberglass double kayak. We had THE BEST time out there. It was a beautiful day that had cleared up right in time for our tour. Spencer was extremely helpful, friendly, and overall a wonderful tour guide. This was our magical experience while staying in Derp Cove. I found it on the expensive side, but we had an amazing experience. We rented two single kayaks and followed a map that was given to us. We got a short informative tutorial from the staff and we were on our way. The kayaks were in good condition and there wasn't much boat traffic in the cove. Beautiful houses are on the cove and the water was so clear we could see beautiful jellyfish and a seal popped up next to us during our time on the water. The most scenic part that we paddled through was right near where we left the cove. Make a reservation as they are very busy in the summer. read more

After 14 years of kayaking at this Cove, I am finally writing a review. This place in the early days was a closely held secret of mine before it became what it is today. The feel of this kayak rental shop used to be held together by a small group of avid kayakers who really liked the sport, nestled at the heart of the community. The people booking your kayak on the phone used to be people who knew the boats inside and out and now I seem to get one clueless bloke/chick after another and they keep having to put me on hold because no one can answer my questions. It was once a sleepy, quiet community on the early mornings I set out, taking up to 3 buses to get to the Cove and now the community itself and the tourism here has exploded making it one of the top places that I avoid kayaking. The only times I have ever been here were to break new beginners in mainly for the location alone and the placid waters. Previously credit cards weren't used to book boats. This was the time before anyone could fathom destroying a kayak or being stupid or disrespectful enough to do so. Now a credit card is always required on hand booking a boat. This isn't any different at any other kayak place these days but I can actually remember a time not long ago when this wasn't a requirement. Due to the tourism and high demand of the kayaks, the boats book up fast and securing a boat means paying for the rental upfront with a cancellation fee involved if cancelled before a certain time. The main reason for the 3 stars is the decline in standards of the boats and the lack of real good boats here. They just sold the last and only used Eliza available. There's a definite shift towards plastic kayaks of the lower end due to the high wear and tear of the craft. God forbid it ever becomes like Harrison Eco Tours' kayaks at Harrison Hot Springs where the rudders are completely removed from the boats due to irresponsible use and (probably consistently DRUNK) customers destroying the craft regularly. Deep Cove Kayak hasn't yet seemed to have taken all the rudders off yet or reached that point but I feel that the quality of boats and the opportunity to have a real killer experience at this location is dwindling fast. Their main redeeming point is their multiple day expeditions or trips and the preliminary recreational lessons here. I would highly advise their day lessons which are fully available on weekends for the weekend road (and water) warriors. I've taken multiple courses here over the years when the rolling clinic for example first came out and I've taken bracing and edging and solo recovery courses and I had plenty of fun. They provide recreational kayaking certifications levels 1-3 and also offer Paddle Canada prereq courses. However, I believe there is only one person who can answer your questions in regards to preparing for Paddle Canada /instructor level courses and you'll be required to prove your prereq skills prior to being certified if you have previous experience and knowledge. That person is the director or head of the rental shop and he alone is able to answer your questions. He is also extremely difficult to get a hold of and speak to. The evolution of the courses has changed over the years, now combining some courses I took individually, with each other and these are great for anyone who hasn't taken anything. It is not so great for the person who just wants a brush up on some things. So far, as friendly as everyone may be over the phone, no one knows anything about the courses or lessons except the people qualified to teach and they are usually not the ones answering the phone. Your best bet is to be patient when asking questions and you should know your own skill level. Be prepared to be put on hold or to have a call back number on hand because they will offer to call you back. Note that all people wanting to rent alone or embark on a solo trip even if for one or two hours needs to prove or be able to clearly state that they have been trained in solo recovery for their own safety. This is another safety precaution they never had back in the old days. They simply took my driver's licence back then and held it at the front desk while I splashed about. As long as I had a life jacket on and promised to bring the boat back, I could have the gear and have fun. For those going out in couples or doubles, at least one person in your party must know how to adequately perform capsize recovery or have some certification. I would recommend this location and the rental shop to those who are beginners. Use this as a place of learning and get some classes under your belt for practice. If you have the opportunity not to go on a weekend, I recommend going on a weekday instead. Keep in mind the tides and setting out in the morning(8-10AM) is best for beginners and recreational/leisure kayaking. If you want a good feel of kayaking, don't book a double kayak. Our booking was a bit messed up. They confused our name with another booking's name because the girl misheard my last name, and our group was standing around doing nothing after our booking time for a bit before we kayaked. I noticed on the small card that was given to me, where it said "group's name" that it had another unfamiliar last name on it so I asked another staff member who's name was written on my card, who chuckled and said it was my own group's name and left. I'm not sure why it didn't occur to her why I was so confused! Additionally, after our session, I was told I still had a balance to pay, in which I already paid off, because they were still confused as to which group we were. I'm very glad they extended our time but I think this kerfuffle would have all been avoided if ID was checked when we come in for our bookings, especially if they are prepaid for, or people could just show up and say that they were so and so! read more

Had an awesome evening SUP paddle here a few weeks back! The staff is friendly, knowledgable, enthusiastic, and excited to be at work. I wanted to rent a racing SUP, which they had for me. I paddled 4 miles north, about halfway up the Indian arm, and then took my time on the paddle back across from the bay down the opposite side of the getty. The mountains are phenominal, tons of jellies, boat traffic is plentiful so ride with caution, waves were mellow when I was out. Hope to come back someday and do the full 8 miles up the Indian Arm, would love a summer job here! read more

Great way to spend a weekend! My friend and I rented a canoe on Friday and went up the Indian arm camping all long weekend and returned it on Monday. Amazing views, very pieceful and lots of spots to camp for free. The manager and staff at DCCKC we amazing at helping us do this. They set up the rental ahead of time so when we got there it was a very quick time before we were out on the water. They helped us plan our route and gave us hints on where to go and what to check out. It was my first time ever in a canoe and my friend had only been out once when he was younger. Not to mention we had a 110# dog with us which didn't make it easy. They made sure we were comfortable and set up a plan for search and rescue incase we had any issues, which we did not! (Make sure if you go overweight or with a dog, which is not recommended, you have some kind of anti-tipping device. We used 10' 2x4's clamped to the rails with small booyes that we bought at Canadian Tire. We could both stand up and rock back and forth and couldn't get close to tipping it) The only complaint was that the canoes they have are pretty beat up. They defiantly serve the purpose though. I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone, and I have. If your around the area, you have to make the trip up the Indian Arm. Good place to rent a SUP or kayak. We went on a holiday and it was super busy. The staff were young (maybe teens or early 20s), helpful and on task. They gave us a refresher on how to paddle, and recommended a couple of routes for SUPPing for a 2 hour rental. We had emailed ahead of time to see if they were open and they made a great suggestion to reserve ahead of time - I was able to do it easily over the phone but they also have an online booking system. Do it! We got there at 10:45 and they had already run out of rentals for the walk-in customers arriving with us. Nice place to paddle but the water can get choppy in the areas with boat traffic. It's quite a busy area, and not quite a peaceful retreat if that's what you want. read more
