I tried Blown for a haircut this weekend. A girlfriend of mine recommended the salon and Mason. I know she's very particular about her hair, so I knew this would be a good change for me! I wanted a more modern, edgy cut and with the description of the salon, my friend's recommendation and the reviews here on Yelp, I figured it would be a good fit. Everything at the salon is great! Every one I was in contact with was very friendly - Michelle who made my appointment, confirmed my appointment and greeted me at check-in, Patrick who shampoo'd me to Mason who gave me a fab new cut and is sweet, funny and downright fabulous. Yes, it's a pricey haircut, but no much more than I paid at the downtown salon I previously went to. And it was great. Mason took the time to talk about what I wanted, to tell me what would and wouldn't work with my hair and I felt very comfortable immediately. I was also surprised that they gave me a 10% discount since I was a new customer. Definitely a nice perk. I'll be going back for sure! I have curly hair and I haven't had it cut in years. In fact, I have never cut my hair to the length that I was wanting to. It was imperative to find someone that could cut curly hair and cut it correctly! That person ended up being SARAH! She did my hair exactly how I wanted it and she had a great personality too. Wish I had read the reviews before I wasted my time. I tried this salon out with a groupon and would not go back. Maybe the stylist was not having a good day? She criticized my hair repeatedly for being dry then proceeded to complain about how long the moisture treatment would take. Topped off by laziest blowout I've ever had at a salon. For years I went to the same fantastic lady for my cut and highlights. In the last few months I have been looking for a new place. I live and work in Old Town and there are plenty of salons in this area, so I have used Groupon to try several of these. Largely it has been a disaster. I have long wavy hair that is dark blonde/light brown, I have it lightened to a proper blond and the cut is straight in the back with framing around my face. I like fine even highlights and soft and angling for a soft sophisticated look. The other places I have been recently left me with hair that was uneven (so uneven I could not wear it straight) in the back and brassy sporadic highlights. Last night upon entry I was desperate, terrified, and cautious. Blown is located right off King street. There is a pay parking lot right behind the salon. The door was open and I ascended wooden stairs that had been hand painted with empowering words. When I reached the lobby I found the decor colorful and eclectic. Nervous. I was immediately greeted by a gentlemen who was very polite. I told him my name and that I was there for a 5:15. He scrolled through his computer and looked perplexed. This seemed akin to the experiences I'd had in the last couple of months. He offered me a beverage and politely excused himself as I prepared to leave. Upon his return he told me that my appointment had been scheduled for the following week, as I could not remember who I made the appointment with I really could not contest. But, I didn't have to! He informed me that I would be helped promptly, which I was. Susy my stylish had just finished two cut (appearing to be mother and daughter) they both had short hair, and I was told that one had just had fourteen inches cut off: both looked great. My groupon was for a cut, highlight, and blowout, so I was a little surprised when Susy asked about the cut I was interested in but not the highlights. I told her everything. She said that she had asked about the cut only because she could tell I'd recently had highlights done and also that I had fine hair. I was appreciative and impressed by her quick and accurate evaluation of my hair. She is concerned about processing my hair again so quickly so she calls for another opinion. I really appreciated this as well: here is someone who valued the health of my hair over perceived expertise. The owner arrived and pleasantly introduced himself while tousling and evaluating my hair. They discuss a plan of action and I am on my way. Susy tell me that because we are in a state of damage control it may take a couple of times to get my hair exactly as I want it. She then asks me in percentages how much I wanted lightened. I like that a lot because I felt there was not room for miscommunication that way. My hair was foiled, and I was not left under a heater. In fact, I was barely left at all. She kept a very close eye on the color and shortly I was under the faucet. I was advised on treatments that would benefit my hair and all of my questions about said treatments were answered. She used a protein conditioner and detangling treatment and despite the fact that it had just been colored for the third time in two and a half months it felt soft. I could tell already the highlights were done well. Wet I could see the variations clearly and the are fine, even, and very close to my scalp. Additionally they are a wonderful color. She fixed the cut, deftly wielding her shears. Then she very gently did a great blow out. No yanking or tugging! I am extremely happy with the results! I have finally found a place that I recommend, and where I feel happy and comfortable. Each member of the staff I encountered was so pleasant and helpful. The space is charming. But the most important part, the job done was fantastic. read more

This was my second time getting a Keratin treatment and by far the best results. My hair wet gets very tangled. So far my stylist to untangle my hair was a challenge in itself. My end results are absolutely beautiful with a lot of bounce, its shiny and there is no product in my hair. She also gave me a trim which im very happy with as well. The hair wash was relaxing and refreshing - just perfect for a hot summer afternoon. Oscar completely put me at ease and knew exactly the type of cut I was looking for. I came after getting a groupon for the haircut and moisture treatment. The moisture treatment was exactly what my hair needed in the super dry, over-heated winter conditions. Susy was awesome and I'm really happy with the results of my haircut (you never know when you try a new place because of a groupon deal). She also gave me some great haircare tips without trying to get me to buy a million products from the salon, which I appreciated. Diondra Hall is a fantastic hair dresser who has worked magic on my hair! I have incredibly fine/limp hair but she somehow manages to cut and style it in a way that makes my hair look fantastic! In addition, Diondra really listens to me. If I want to experiment with shorter hair, she cuts it as short as I would like and no more. In addition, she has completed research on her own time to give me advice on various issues such as hair products and hair styles. I highly recommend Diondra and am confident that if she can work magic on my hair, she can do the same and possibly more for you. read more

After cutting and coloring my own hair for years I finally decided to go see a specialist because I wanted to take my level 3 brown hair back to my more natural level color 7-8 blonde . I discovered Diondra at blown through a groupon and she is AMAZING. She made me feel super comfortable, was up to date on all the current hair trends and listened to what I wanted and was realistic with me about what it would take to get there while also maintaining the health of my hair. After 3 visits over the course of 4 months my hair is a gorgeous blonde color that blends so nicely with my regrowth and I have no damage. I even got my sister to start seeing Diondra and she goes every time she's in town. One time my hair came out a little bit brassy and she fit me in immediately the next day and toned it and offered to come in on her day off if I stilI wanted any adjustments made, free of charge. It amazes me how when you go into a salon and you are a potentially new client, how things are so different. My first time going to this salon, it started out being questionable. Obviously, someone had double-booked and everyone wasn't going to be happy so I agreed to letting "the other girl" have my appointment and I was put with someone else. That's just how I roll. So, everything went well and I had my turn and everyone was happy. I was a bit nervous about having someone "new" do my hair but she did an awesome job. Even gave me a "discount" since it was my first time. Now, on to the second appointment. A little different this time. To sum it up, I think she was having a bad day and at my expense. Twice, I almost jumped out of the chair because she burned me with the hair dryer. My color turned out ok, no complaints there. But, when it came to thinning out my hair, let's just say I can't do anything with it. Thank goodness my hair grows fast. My last complaint is that immediately after drying my hair I sensed that she wanted me gone and It made me feel very rushed. I paid 175.00 for a cut and color and I guess I expected the treatment that I got the first time that I was there. Didn't happen. Disappointed. Looking for another salon. read more

Avoid this place! I made an appointment for a quick hairdo for a special event. The receptionist sat me down with someone who really did not have any experience in working with hair. I showed the stylist a photo on my phone of a simple, yet elegant hairdo that was half up with soft, flowing curls. I asked the stylist if he could accomplish this hairstyle in an hour, and he said yes. He then proceeds to curl my hair in tight ringlets like Shirley Temple with a curling iron that was constantly turning off. I told him I wanted free, flowing curls not tight bouncy curls. He and another stylist try to reassure and tell me that the curls would soften over time. I said OK, and let him continue. He burnt me on several occasions and dropped tools on me left and right. I understand that no situation is perfect, however I spent a pretty penny to get my hair done at this place, and I was not at all satisfied with the outcome. I chose Blown because of the "glowing" reviews on Yelp...there are so many salons out there that I could have chosen that would have actually done a better job! To make matters worse, when it came time to actually create the half-updo, the stylist had to run to get advice from another stylist on how to accomplish the style. I should have known at that point that things were not going to turn out well. The stylist then asks me if I have a hair elastic, which I found strange because it is a hair salon and they should have supplies! So, he plays around with my hair and starts combing and brushing and doing all sorts of things to my hair that was not what I had asked for. Eventually, he tells me he is going to look for someone to help him...someone who is more experienced with creating hairstyles!!! He was gone for well over 15 minutes, leaving me in a chair wondering what is going on. Naturally, I got upset because I was on a time crunch and no one came to check on me for a really long time. Eventually, a lady stylist comes with him to help me. I showed her the picture and she was OK we get definitely do that! Fast forward to a good 45 minutes later, I have somewhat of a hairstyle that I was looking for. I wish the receptionist had told me that the individual who was assigned to me lacked experience...I would have definitely taken my business elsewhere. I do not recommend this place. read more

As a first time customer, my experience wasn't great. When I arrived, I was informed by the stylist that he had been overbooked and wouldn't be able to see me for at least 45 minutes. I suggested an alternate option, instead of having to reschedule or wait 45 minutes. I had two stylists do my hair--one who colored my hair and another who cut my hair (the one who cut my hair was the one I had the original appointment with for that day). The one who stepped up to do my color was fabulous. However, the guy who was overbooked kept making comments, insinuating that they were doing me a favor to fit me in. He also said something along the lines that many women don't mind waiting because it was the holidays. I understand that sometimes there are miscommunications between those scheduling the appointments and the stylists. With any customer (especially first time customers), the salon should acknowledge the mistake and apologize....not make excuses and act like you are doing them a favor. The salon did a nice job on my haircut and color, but the customer service was poor. I don't want to have to worry about them not being able to honor my appointment time in the future, so I probably won't be returning. read more

This salon is called Blown in old towne Alexandria. Well be ready for a once unique salon that is now, cramped and frankly quite dirty. The old saying "If it's dirty in obvious places then it's even dirtier every where else". Take a good look around. I guarantee you will see what I'm talking about. Your given water in an old mug, from the tiny kitchen/ hair mixing station area from a brita pitcher. The hair washing area very cramped and DIRTY. My hair dresser was pleasant and careful since I have thin hair but frankly, I'm tired of hearing about hairstylists problems. It was alittle depressing. Very expensive for what you get. I'm a health care professional so I may be alittle picky but I truly felt uncomfortable in this DIRTY salon. Maybe I should call the health department?! My 1st experience was a 3 out of 5. I gave it a second try in case it was so dirty the first time because of the Christmas holiday Rush. Noooottt. I asked for the same hairdresser. She has the same big problems and she was tired or something. The color, cut was not good she didn't remember how I wanted it cut. I will NEVER go back. My experience was bad enough for me to take time to post this to help someone else out. BYB if you get thirsty! Maybe even your own brush. read more

I bought a groupon to have my hair highlighted. I was looking for a good place to get my hair done. I saw the salon had great reviews which is why I bought it. My visit was chaos from the moment I went in: front desk lady offered water but they didn't have any. Then the stylist came out and told me that she was running about 30 minutes late and I could either wait or make an appointment for a different day. I opted to wait which took close to an hour. I spoke to the owner who seemed like he was forcing himself to be pleasant and he was dressed very sloppy and looked, well, dirty. My stylist was pretty good but I felt like I was being a pain in the butt for her. I was left alone after she put on my highlights and nobody spoke to me. Not very friendly. The front desk woman came in and asked me to pay up so she could leave. I was at the salon close to 3 and a half hours. I do like my hair but I would probably have to take a mild sedative in order to go back in there again. It was an exhausting experience and I wish I had the same experience and service there that everyone else on yelp did. I had high hopes. read more
