yes this is a local bar, that serves some food, and not high end by any means. But that is the charm. If you are a fan of "dive bars" , this will be a five star for you. a few of the Barmaids have a little snark- :) . But as noted in other reviews, near freezing beer, clean taste, and inexpensive. Active pool table area every time I've been. I had the "days Special" - hot Ham and cheese sandwich on a pretzel bun, for the price, it hit the spot. Fries may have started frozen , but the were hot and excellent when they got to me ! Fresh cold mug with each pour. Good selection of drafts, but I'll just stick with my Miller Lite. no cards accepted, but a little ATM inside if you must. I just carry cash. I think that this may be one of THE only bars east of the Mississippi that the self purportedly good deer hunter, one "Dog Head" from VERMONT, has never been to. He thinks he's a deer hunter. He ain't ever MET a deer hunter, or the multiple deer hunter widoes there, until he goes to THE BLUE BIRD TAVERN...baddest place (where I come from "bad" means good and "good" means bad...) east and north of Kent Island, man! That's before we start talking goose, man! Menu to die for. Beer IS the coldest in Kent County and certain Yankees, even if they are Vermonters who did shoot well at Gettysburg (not too far off...) ain't even ever been there. My first review of 2023. My local watering hole, the Blue Bird Tavern. What can I say about the Blue Bird? Well, it's awesome! I can say that. I have been coming here ever since moving to Kent County, MD just over 2 years ago and have always felt welcome. Even if there is the occasional ribbing (usually by the owner). LOL. Honestly, I have nothing but good things to say about the Blue Bird. Awesome owner, awesome bartenders, great food, great drinks and friendly patrons. If you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor and stop in. You won't be disappointed. read more

Been dying for an ice cold draft beer without having to take a mortgage out on the house. Really the cost of a Yingling draft wasn't too bad at $2.29 per mug. I was hungry too and started to peruse the placard style menu. The Blue Bird actually has a decent size menu; the only problem is the print is in 10 pitch font and you need reading glasses. This close to the river and bay I was hoping they had a half decent selection of fresh seafood items...not. They did have fresh local blue-crab, and soft-crab. The bar tender told me to forget the soft-crab as they were super tiny. I had a crab cake sandwich....mmmm, that was yummy!! That crab cake was chock full of crab, very little filler if any. It comes with chips, but I wanted fries. I was very happy to see the Blue Bird uses shoe string fries, so quick and easy to cook to a nice crispy texture. The place was clean (men's room too), with a lock on the door in case you need privacy, otherwise the restroom is built for three. The restroom looks like it was redone within the last year. As a 9-ball player, I was thrilled to see they have 3 bar-tables. Next time I up I will bring my cues. The atmosphere was less than casual, but then you could see that the Blue Bird was an iconic establishment here next to Washington College. read more

The bar is closed, but the kitchen is open on Tuesdays for wings and Fridays for for different specials. Tuesdays - the wings are the best around. All the flavors are great. I have a family of five with very different tastes. The honey habanero are sooo good. Just the right amount of sweet and heat. The Old Bay are delicious. Nice and crispy with the right amount of seasoning. We also love the salt and vinegar, honey hot, sweet Chile and buffalo are all great Fridays - I think they have different specials. This past Friday they had burgers featuring McHenry Farms ground beef. You can definitely tell the difference in the beef. All the burgers were delicious. read more

I came in the establishment just for food. Now I know that this is a bar , but clearly serving food is not important to them. The menu is very slim and filled with a bunch of frozen food items . I tried to play it safe and order a cheese steak, but they were out of cheese steaks , so again I decided to play it safe and just order a bacon cheeseburger. I wasn't surprised when I got the burger and could immediately tell that it was a little frozen beef Pattie that was most likely heated up in the microwave . The French fries that I had to pay extra for were also frozen fries that they bought from some kind of restaurant Depot. Very disappointed . read more

As a college student, this experience was not great. The atmosphere was not very welcoming and my friends and I were rudely approached by a server who demanded our ID's and aggressively threatened to kick us out if we did not name our address and zip code. I understand wanting to catch fakes but we were all of age and it could have been handled much more graciously. The food is mediocre at best and definitely overpriced. They also need to advertise that they do not accept card because that was another issue. read more

If you're planning a trip to Antarctica in the near future.. cancel that right now and get your ass down to the Blue Bird.. the beer is so cold you'll be in the E.R. Faster than you can spell pneumonia. Don't even get me started on the Reuben. This damn sandwich hits harder than Mark McGwire in 1996. I have gone this this spot a few times now and each time the same bartender is working. I noticed each time she treated me cold also she would look over me to serve other people. I ignored it honestly, did not say a word but because food spots are limited in Chestertown I would go back and went back today which leads to my story that is 100% true. So the same bartender was there and she treated me cold, no refills, no check as she tended to the other people as they came in all in walking by me. I even saw she saw that I finished my food and was out of water yet she kept walking by. So today I asked her if she noticed that she was walking by me and she looked over at 3 white men and started talking loud LOL that was funny to me. Ofcourse these white men did not say anything, which was good for them. So she goes on to say she hopes I never come back and I told her I would not be because I wouldn't want to be in racist place. Maybe if you live in the Chestertown area or you are middle aged and white you can go here and be treated well but if you are black you possibly may be treated like I have been even before the situation today. I would never go back there and it's so sad that in 2018 racist people still exist. I would think by now everyone would treat each other equal but I guess if you never been across the Bay Bridge in your life you believe what the media portrays about blacks. read more

I have a somewhat ambivalent attitude toward this dive bar. On one hand, the Blue Bird is not a place I would like to envision myself in a couple of years or that I would pick out if I were unfamiliar in the area. On the other hand, there are several reasons to come here and I have to admit I come here about once a week on average. If I were personally more into this kind of bar, the Blue Bird would get four stars. Let's start with the bad things first: it is called the "Dirty Bird" for a reason. The interior looks like it hasn't been refurbished in a decade or two and the neon singns make this place look a little trampy. The ceilings are low and the ventilation isn't all that, which results in a sweaty, clammy atmosphere when it's busy. The Gentlemen's Room is a little hole in the wall lacking both space and privacy. After a few beers I can appreciate the charm of all this but it's not a place I would take my parents or my special lady friend. On a more positive note, however, there has to be good reason why "The Bird" has been a staple of Chestertown nightlife and an instittution among the local college students. My guess is that the primary reason is cheap booze. I forgot the exact prices but they are considerably less than those of Andy's, its more upscale counterpart in town. During the Bird's signature night, Team Tuesday, pitchers of Bud Light are $4,50. Shots, cocktails and mixed drinks are not of very high quality but they are reliably strong,and affordable. Essentially the same goes for the food. The Bird has a fairly large food menu, which covers the basics of burgers and wings quite well. It has come to my ears that a certain professor at the college's Environmental Studies department eats his lunch here every day. I have only eaten here once; all I can say about the hot buffalo wings is that they were good and affordable. Furthermore, there are three pool tables. Fearing I'd ruin the carpet I don't play myself, but I often see people do. Finally, the lady behind the bar is a real sweetheart and service is generally good, unless it gets too busy. They should hire somebody extra during the real busy nights. So, in conclusion, what the Blue Bird does, it does well. It is a good place to go for a quick burger or a cheap beer, which I will do relatively frequently while I still go to college. I doubt, however, I will come by here often after I graduate. read more

Many good memories at the Bird, including at least one cram session for an exam. The interior hasn't changed at all since at least '83 (my freshman year), but it's well-kept and cozy. The beer is cold, the sandwiches are good, and you get a good town/gown mix in there most nights. Just a really good bar. read more
