Stopped by with friends while in the area recently. This little creamery has it going on. The afternoon of our visit, the place was packed. The interior is open with walk up counter service. A large family style table with chairs and a few small tables along the window to the left of the counter and register area. The staff are all friendly and engaged, there were multiple staff helping folks in three different service lines and that made the wait on line minimal and the service fairly quick. A nice selection of ice creams for most tastes, with a menu board of the daily offerings is posted overhead. After giving the menu a look over, I opted for a two scoop bowl - butter pecan and vanilla. Both were very good and a nice sized serving. My friends and I grabbed a seat at the large family style table and enjoyed our frozen treats. All in all a solid choice for frozen treats and worth the wait if its busy. I got a caramel crunch ice cream which I enjoyed but the vanilla was very bland, it only tasted good when I got bits of the caramel. The service was good, you can try as many samples as you want! Overall a good place with plenty of seating, good prices and portion sizes. I asked for my scoop in a cup which looked like it had another ice cream flavor but the girl serving my ice cream still used the cup which I found odd... Cute little ice cream shop. We passed it earlier today when visiting the zoo. We read online that all ice cream is handmade - which I love. I tried the sea salt caramel brittle - oh so yummy. My kids had mint chip on a waffle cone which they do charge an extra $1.50 - seemed to be the fan favorite of the shop, me and my husband stuck with the classic cake cones. Service was nice, the shop was mostly ran by young gentleman and a few younger gals. The place was hopping, be mindful parking lot is small but there is an office right next door that offered a few spots, or you could park along the street. I tried their ice cream after a food tour I took in downtown Roanoke when I saw their truck and sandwich board. The board listed some really interesting flavors that I wanted to try. The service was ok. Not super friendly and they slammed the little sliding door shut after taking my order, presumably to keep in their AC but still felt rude. Stopped by Blue cow after lunch in Roanoke. It was my first time visiting Roanoke and when I searched ice cream, Blue cow came up first. The location couldn't be any better. It is located right off the River and you have a view of the bike trail and the star when you are seated outdoors. I tried the homemade waffle cone with their cookies n cream flavor ice cream. It was by far one of the best cookies n cream ice creams I have had in my life. The ice cream was chewy, cold, not overly sweet. There were good chunks of the cookies in it. The service was great. For two scoops on a waffle cone, it was $8.59. I wish they had this in Northern Virginia. I would recommend this to anyone. Funny how the dentist is right by here. read more

FOOD Blue Cow Ice Cream was at the top of my list to try when I was visiting Roanoke. Their cookies & cream ice cream certainly didn't fall short of expectations! It was rich, creamy, and not overly sweet. The cookie chunks were also nothing short of plentiful. My only caveat was the portion of the scoop. For $5, the portion was definitely on the smaller end, which was odd because the photos online make the portions seem so large. Maybe it was a one-off thing. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly. When I drove by this place, I was thinking what on earth was it doing in this random location, but then I approached it from the greenway trail (not that easy to see from the road) and the utility of the location became clear. I mean, why not hop in while you're walking or otherwise moving along the river? This place has a deck overlooking the river and also a water fountain with bottle filler and some restrooms (of which the greenway does not have any nearby), so it's actually quite a convenient location when you know what's going on. In addition to that, they appear to produce excellent ice cream. They had some vegan options and even advertised a shake with oat milk, but I went for the old-fashioned dairy desserts, including a flavor with berries and oatmeal and a good old mint chip. Both delivered well on their premise. This is apparently a chain spread widely throughout the commonwealth, and I think this location here is a great thing for Roanoke to have. read more

I quickly see why this is a staple in Roanoke! I went on a Friday evening and it was very crowded, however the staff was able to tend to every customer very quickly and kindly. I sampled a few flavors but ended up going with cereal milk which tasted great! I also added some Oreo chunks to it as a topping. There are two benches to sit on outside if you prefer to enjoy the weather and also a few tables inside as well. It was a little odd that one person thought that the regular cake cones had dairy when someone else quickly corrected them. It does smell like freshly made waffle cones as soon as you walk inside. They had three different non dairy flavors, make sure you try before you commit. They said the mint chip was not too minty, and it really was overwhelming. Biggest downside is the seating, specifically the outdoor seating where there are tables and chairs, but nothing is cleaned. So basically you have to use napkins and water to try to scrub off your table full of old other people's cream spills to use outdoor seating. They seem busy enough to be able to assist better with this issue, or at least provide cleaning supplies for customers. but this is quite the drawback. The store employees greeted us with a smile, explained any questions we had about the ice creams, gave us a sample in a tiny spoon of any flavor we might be interested in tasting, and filled the Waffle Cone with a generous portion of ice cream scoops. I ordered a Waffle Cone with two scoops of ice cream: one was Peanut Butter Fudge, and the other was Peanut Butter Cokies & Cream. They both were the right softness, very creamy, flavorful and delicious. The ice cream servers made us smile, laugh, and feel at home, while they served us the ice creams. The cash register was of the latest technology so it was easy to pay by just tapping ones credit card on it while holding the ice cream with your other hand. Next to the register there are gift cards for sale and a freezer with glass full of quarts of different ice cream flavors for sale to go. On the back wall next to the restrooms there is a bulletin filled with business cards from different members of the community. Outside, besides a small parking lot for customers to park their cars, there is also a roof covered eating area that looks on to a stream of water. It's a cute and trendy looking ice cream shop! Perfect for an afternoon treat whether you feel like driving there and using their parking lot or if you're on the Roanoke River Greenway and want to make a stop. There is a big amount of flavors to choose from. I got a flight and split it with someone and it was more than enough ice cream. The non dairy flavors are limited though. My wife and I were really excited to try this place upon seeing other reviews. We were especially excited about the flight of ice cream that allowed us to select four different types of ice cream on our visit. It basically four of what they call mini scoops on a wooden board. On our trip today, we walked in and noted that they had both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating overlooks a river and a walkway. We were greeted by an employee who was working by herself but was knowledgeable, patient and helpful as we requested to sample several different flavors and asked her opinion on flavors. We selected goat cheese blueberry (it sounds weird but it is surprisingly light and smooth), salted caramel (a little salty for my taste but my wife liked it), chocolate peanut butter pretzel and snickerdoodle. We really enjoyed our meal and found the flight a great way to sample a lot of different flavors. They also offer pints to go if you want some for your house. The service is excellent. I didn't like the non dairy strawberry balsamic ice cream but still worth a 4 star review for everything else. When I asked which cones were non dairy, the woman at the counter took the time to ask if it was an allergy so she could get a new unused scoop to avoid cross contamination. She really went the extra mile for someone who had the nerve to come to an ice cream shop with a dairy issue! Note: the gluten free cone is the only cone that doesn't contain dairy. Regarding the strawberry balsamic non dairy ice cream... I didn't enjoy it - I should have asked to taste it first. It had a strange flavor - maybe rancid coconut? maybe this was a bad batch? The gluten free cone was nice and crunchy. The line was long but moved quickly because the staff are so efficient. We sat inside which was fine. Lots of people used the outdoor seating. There aren't a lot of parking spots but people are coming and going so it seems to work out. Overall great spot if you can actually have real ice cream. Out of the various ice cream/dessert options in Roanoke, Blue Cow stood out to me the most due to their unique flavor options! They have ice cream flights for 4/$9.50 and the scoops are really generous! The staff was really patient when it was hard to decide on what flavors we wanted. I especially appreciated that they were very accommodating of my fiancé's peanut and tree nut allergy and they took extra precaution in cleaning the scoops.
