This gym is fantastic. I started here as a newbie to crossfit and was reluctant to take the foundations course since I'd always been a gym rat. I thought foundations would be too elementary or unnecessary but by the end of the first workout I knew I was wrong. It was so worth it since crossfit has a lot of movements I had never done in typical group exercise classes.
I decided to try crossfit because I wanted to be strong - I had never done a "real" push up my whole life, and I like the idea of being able to control my body, do handstands, pull ups, push ups, etc. Crossfit definitely has me on track to accomplish those things. I know that if I continue with crossfit I will be in the best shape of my life.
One thing I noticed when I started crossfit is that people would ask me, "Have you had any injuries yet?" Apparently crossfit is notorious for injuries - but Blue Crab does everything it can to PREVENT injuries. They are quick to let you know when your form is off and encourage you to make it through the WHOLE workout instead of pushing too hard in the beginning and not being able to finish. Their overall workout philosophy is on point in that sense. I always had better workouts when I worked hard and steady as opposed to burning up all my energy in one or two exercises. I also didn't know anyone who injured themselves at crossfit (except for someone who tripped while doing a box jump, but that wasn't anything like a torn rotator cuff or torn ACL...)
The members here are super nice. Some of them take a little more time to warm up to than others, but then again I tend to be overly friendly and feel the need to be friendly with everyone in the gym .Sometimes people just want to come in and workout, which I totally get.
The owner, Josh, is AWESOME. Not only is he extremely skilled in working as a coach, but he's really good with people and understands the whole picture of an athlete. He went out of his way to help coach me and make me accountable with my food choices and what I did outside of the gym. Some might think crossfit is expensive, but this made it worth it to me. Over time I realized that he is a great guy with a heart of gold - and he has found his calling in the world in being a gym owner. He's that good.
The rest of the coaching team is awesome too. They all know proper form, technique, they know how to scale workouts down so you don't injure yourself and so that you can work your way up to more difficult moves. They all know how to TEACH the moves - every class they walk you through progressions of each movement, even if you've done it 100 times before. This helps you to get your form perfect and again helps in preventing injuries. The coaches went out of their way more than once to make sure I was able to do some scaled form of exercises when the actual move was too tough for me. I always felt taken care of in that sense. For example if I couldn't do the rope climbs in the workout they would show my how to use the rope to pull myself up from the floor so that I still built up the muscles and strength I needed to eventually to a rope climb, and I still got a good workout that day.
All in all I can't recommend this gym enough. If you're ready to take your fitness to the next level take their foundations course and start working out here! read more
