I LOVE Melanie!! Preface: When I was a more active henna artist back home in Hawaii, Melanie was one of the big name artists I looked up to (with stars in my eyes like a proper fangirl) and took inspiration from much of her artwork on social media. Her peonies? Swoon. I booked a private appointment for a large body design with her at her studio nearly a year in advance, as soon as I found out I was heading to Portland for a dance thing. People, Melanie is worth splurging for -- not only is she an incredibly skilled and experienced body artist, she is a one woman show who makes her own clean henna and runs a local art business with integrity. All. By. Herself. #respectthehustle While I had a lot of past experience with henna, and a little with jagua, I was curious to try a jagua and a henna-jagua mixture design on myself. Melanie has worked with jagua for over a decade, and was very helpful in explaining to me the staining mechanism for jagua and the proper aftercare for optimal staining to happen. There was no doubt that she knew her stuff, and was good at it to boot. I was beyond excited. She had done a snake and peony design for a dancer a while back, and I thought it was so gorgeous that I had saved it and asked for it to make a comeback, just for me. I wanted more peonies (we settled on three), and a design that wrapped around my torso (see pic by Melanie) ~ the snake would be in jagua, and the peonies in a henna-jagua mixture for a nice contrast. Melanie was so fast and easy to work with in figuring out a design that worked for me and that I would be proud to wear for the duration of my Portland stay. The whole ordeal took about 75 minutes to do; I wanted her to do a good job, and was willing to pay more for something done well. Fun fact: I fell asleep! She had me lying on my side on a massage table, and went right to work. The drying process afterwards was a bit involved as we waited for the jagua to dry on the skin. I loved that she took the time to wrap me up after (in cotton gauze, no less!) and made sure I could get up okay. She made me feel very well taken cared of, and I appreciated everything she did in the time we spent together. The stain turned out INTENSE, and I absolutely LOVED it. Gah! It looked like a real tattoo, and the contrast from the henna-jagua peonies was super lovely. And even though it's starting to fade and look soft and fuzzy now that I'm back home in Hawaii again, it still looks (and makes me feel) badass. Can't wait to do it again!! A phenomenal experience. Melanie's pregnancy belly mandalas are so stunning! I am not a woman who naturally feels "radiant" or "empowered" when pregnant (more like "wobbly" and "spherical"), so this was a really wonderful way for me to celebrate being pregnant instead of just counting down the days till it's over. I really loved her studio as well. She had beautifully colorful and exotic decor, a fantastic geranium smell wafting in the air, complimentary tea, and a basket of snacks for me to eat while getting the henna done! May I start by saying I received henna from her booth at Saturday market not a her shop which I am assuming a different experience would have taken place.... With that said I was extremely disappointed. I thought she was pretty expensive but still decided to get a 10 dollar finger henna tattoo. At one point totally my fault it got messed up and she fixed it, with a less then nice attitude. I ended up paying 15 because I just felt like such a burden after her groaning at me multiple times. About 3 hours later me and my best friend found another booth that did whole hands for as low as 8 bucks. That just assured me that we were ripped off. Also being a crafty person I have done henna to my self before and could have easily done the same pattern and more at home! :( read more
