20 MAY 2026 -- I performed poetry from Purple Rose: The Stars Carry Her Name -- Letters from Me to Her at the historic and legendary Blue Moon Tavern in Seattle. Originally opened in 1934, the Blue Moon carries the kind of atmosphere you cannot recreate -- walls covered in decades of music, art, stickers, photographs, and stories. A dimly lit room packed with musicians, writers, artists, and people who genuinely appreciate creativity in its raw form. Throughout the night, the stage moved between live music, poetry, and performances from local artists while the crowd filled the tavern from the bar to the stage floor. Places like this remind me why independent art still matters. As an author traveling all over the United States -- and as someone who lived in the Seattle area for 2 1/2 years -- standing on that stage reading poetry from Purple Rose in a venue with this much history behind it was really something special. What I loved most was how welcoming the environment was. This is a very LGBTQ-friendly, art-friendly space where people genuinely support one another. If you are brand new to open mics or nervous about sharing your work for the first time, this is the kind of place where you will absolutely be shown kindness and encouragement. There were so many talented musicians, poets, and performers there, and you could really feel the appreciation for creativity throughout the room. The setup of the tavern itself is awesome. The stage and seating area wrap around the bar in almost a U-shape, so you can really choose your own vibe for the night. If you want to stay close to the performances and music, there is a dance floor and table area near the stage. If you want something more relaxed, you can hang back near the bar, have a drink, and still enjoy the atmosphere without being directly in the middle of everything. They also have a full bar, arcade games, board games, books to read, and even a small library on the shelves throughout the tavern. Somewhere inside, you may even find a signed copy of Purple Rose that I left hidden and dedicated to the historic Blue Moon itself. Beautiful evening with wonderful people. I just had what is literally the worst bar experience I have ever had in my life at the Blue Moon Tavern. I, my wife, and her friend stopped by for New Year's Drinks around 6, and about 6:30 or so, made the mistake of asking Tim Duvall, the clearly drunken before 7:00 PM owner of the establishment, whether outside food can be brought into the bar. This led to his regaling us with an extended and utterly unsolicited history of the bar. He then invited himself to sit with us, halfway into the seat before slurring a "Can I sit down?" to insert himself into our booth. We then moved to another unsolicited conversation, this time about politics. Now, to be clear - I have no doubt that I and a sober Tim Duvall probably agree on most of our politics. This did not stop him from berating me as I agreed with his point, loudly escalating and yelling as I tried to agree with him (again... to be clear, I DIDN'T disagree his political view) until he stood and began yelling that I was kicked out. As I stood to talk on him, he became VERY comfortable with putting his hands on me, grabbing my sweatshirt to move me. I was NOT about to challenge that as a Black man new to Seattle that doesn't know how the police would handle things. I need to be very specific about how quickly this man felt comfortable touching me, grabbing my sweater to "drag" me. This is the step that is WAY over the line. I would genuinely like to recommend this place, as I'm looking for bars that offer sugar cane soda. Drunken ownership- in the early evening in New Year's - that feels comfortable being handsy with Black folk is far too much. AVOID at all costs. read more

The last time I was at the Blue Moon was in 1994 and we probably killed a few pitchers of Henry's many baskets of peanuts and probably a pack of camel lights. The place had a great vibe, but we called it atmosphere back then. It looks like the only thing that has changed is that people vape now and they don't have Henry's anymore. read more

Divey, yet charming holdover and Seattle icon. It is an intimate and friendly space with good service, as well as walls to ceiling full of history and memorabilia. Shows are inexpensive, the drinks are reasonable, the service is friendly, the atmosphere is friendly and energetic. The space is small but I think the spin is that it feels intimate and fun, rather than crowded. There are some cool nooks and seating areas in here. I don't believe there is a kitchen, just a small menu of snacks. Overall, it's the kind of down to earth place that is hard to find in Seattle these days. Check it out! I can imagine ambling in here every now and again to catch a random show and soak up the good vibes. read more

If you're into local dive bars this is the place! A true piece of Seattle history as it began in the 1930s...it's dingy and a bit worn, so what's not to love? Random art and books adorn the walls. Live Music on the weekends is always a good time. I think the cover charge is around $10? But not bad. This place could use some business to keep a true gem alive. All local beer on tap which is great. Staff are friendly. All in all a nice neighborhood watering hole. read more

This is a dive with a LONG history in Seattle. I want to say, it's a century long (if not close). The fodder that adorns the walls is evidence in itself, of the history that DRIPS from this little watering hole. I could spend HOURS just roaming the nick-nacks with my eyes. A Seattle icon! The 1934 Blue Moon Tavern is one of the oldest bars in the city, and anybody visiting should really hit it up. If you really want a taste of Seattle's rock history, this is the place to go! Nirvana played here in '91 and it's still rocking today. So glad to see some of my friends return here after almost 20 years! For a live venue, the lights and sound is really good and they live stream their shows online. But you can't beat actually walking in the same steps as Seattle rock idols and smelling that old beer and admiring the graffiti plastered walls. Plus the prices for alcohol are really reasonable ($4 Rainier, anybody?) and the bartenders are always friendly. read more

I've been driving by the Blue Moon Tavern for years now on 45th and never gave it much thought. Then while grabbing a few beers with some co-workers I finally got the chance to go. From the outside it looks much smaller than it was from the inside. The service was great, didn't have to wait at all to receive my tasty ale. There was also live music while we were there which really enhanced my experience. Next time you're looking for a nice dive bar with some live music come check this place out. you won't be disappointed. read more

This place adds new meaning to the expression "if these walls could talk". This place has been around since just after Prohibition was repealed and has seen some very interesting characters come and go. I don't know if it's registered and protected as a historic landmark, but it should be because it really could easily be chewed up and spit up by Seattle progress in its unassuming near UDistrict location. Pretty much everything in all of the the reviews is true whether they are 1 star or 5 star. It's divey and old, and they have alot of live music. The service is whatever they feel like on any given night, and they know and are chatty with their regulars. It's not a place for a craft cocktail craze, but they have a range of brews and a selection of the hard stuff at higher than average dive bar prices. I hate this expression, but it is what it is. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Saturday and the bar was very empty, but we did not feel unwelcome or awkward at all. Not safe. Bar has a great history and the staff themselves are nice. But the new owner doesn't make safety for his patrons a priority. When someone asked about what he does if he's worried about going over capacity he said not to worry about it because the fire department almost never checks (!) A music performer was also arrested by the police a few minutes before he went on stage. He was arrested for domestic violence. That same performer was booked again a few weeks later. This bar has a great history. But avoid if you worry about being trampled to death in a fire or don't want to be around domestic abusers. read more

I went on a little bar hopping adventure around University District over the weekend and Blue Moon happened to be one of my stops. I read from their reviews that they had cheap drinks and decent live music, so I was excited to check them out! Truthfully, Blue Moon isn't my scene. Now, I'm usually a fan of dive bars, because I'm all about the cheap drinks, sticky floors, unique crowd, and live music. Don't get me wrong Blue Moon had all of that, but I just wasn't feeling this bar at all. For a Saturday night, it wasn't too busy, which I was surprised about. I sat at the bar and ordered a gin and tonic. Generous pour, well made, heavy on the gin - my kinda drink! The bartender was super kind and even though he couldn't hear what I was saying half the time because of the loud music, doesn't mean his service wasn't on point. The band that came on performed loud screamo rock music, which to be honest isn't my favorite. I wish I brought ear plugs (I usually do now to most concerts/live music shows, cuz' ear damage, y'all), because my ears were rinnnnnging the minute I walked out of the bar. I came, had a drink, and left. I probably wouldn't return, but that shouldn't stop you from visiting and making your own opinion about this place! read more

We've played the Blue Moon several times now. I'm a big fan of the place. There are a lot of really generic yuppy bars around Seattle, and more popping up all the time. The Blue Moon, on the other hand, should be the definition listed in Webster's Dictionary for "Dive Bar." I play bass with Stay Tuned (www.staytunedtheband.com). We're a tv tribute band. The Blue Moon took a risk on us early on in our career and let us play there. Is that saying much? Probably not, but I hold a special place in my heart for it just the same. The characters there... holy crap. It's like Christopher Lloyd studied there for his Reverend Jim character on Taxi. I posted a picture of one of the characters from one of our first shows there. The art on the walls is one of my personal favorites. Reminds me of the basement at CalArts, my Alma Mater. I knocked off a star because I've had to use the bathroom there. Oooh wow it's been a couple years and I still shiver at the memory. Loading in is always interesting -- we park in the alley for a while and wheel stuff in, the go find parking somewhere. At one point I was loading my equipment up and a black van pulled up right in front of me. A bunch of S.W.A.T. guys jumped out and ran right towards me, armed to the teeth. I nearly crapped myself. They continued on past me and tackled somebody behind me in the alley. I'm pretty sure the guy had just come out of the Blue Moon. So there you have it. You can go and enjoy live music AND sit in a crowd that may include public enemy #1. read more

Screw this place. I know that this is a dive bar. I've been to plenty so I'm not about to complain about the look of the place. I'm bashing this place simply because the bartender was a complete asshole. Rude as hell. I came in sad and depressed so it was time to drink my pain away. This was the first time I had ever come here. I wanted to go to Floating Bridge next door, but it was packed with college kids and too lively for my mood. I needed something dank. Enter Blue Moon Tavern. I turned to my left and walked right in. It was pretty empty for a Saturday night, but it was also still early at 8 pm. When I sat down, the bartender didn't greet me. He just stared. I asked him what beers he had on tap and he just pointed to the sign above him. Before I could make a selection, he asked for my I.D. Ok nothing wrong with that. I look young for my age so at over 30, I am still carded all the time. But the way he asked. His tone suggested that I was some dumb kid trying to drink in a bar and his face said that too. I gave him my I.D., he took it to the light and stared it for what seemed a full 5 minutes. I felt it was necessary. He gave me my I.D. back and asked me what I wanted. When he handed me my drink, he asked if I wanted to keep the tab open. I knew from the start that this was going to be my only drink here so I said no. While I drank, there was this real drunk lady sitting to the left of me. My bartender friend walked over to her and started gingerly chatting with her and even took a shot. It was the first time I ever saw him smile while I was there. She was a regular. So if you wanna be treated decently, you gotta come here all the time was my assessment. I paid for my drink and and vowed to never return. And the "security" is a joke. Just some dude that wears a black sweater that says "security" on it who sits outside against the wall with his head down and phone in his hand. Avoid this place like Ebola. read more

Come one, come all to this quirky eclectic divey bar. This place is frequented by locals and I can see why, it is just a cozy place to come and sit at the bar and have a strong drink to while the time away on a weeknight or a weekend. We like to come here right before going to the AMC to watch a movie. We sit at the bar and take in the memorabilia all over the walls, there is always something different that catches our eye. The locals are friendly and welcoming. On a Friday night you can listen to music played by local bands. read more

A Seattle Icon. A slice of history. A piece of a disappearing time. A dive bar, bar none. The Blue Moon isn't for everyone. It isn't a "designed" dive. It wasn't carefully decorated and deconstructed. It doesn't care what the fuck you think about it. It is the oldest tavern in the University District (opening in December of 1933) and it looks and feels and smells like it. It has, what they call on Antiques Roadshow, "patina." This is a place to meet friends, but never a date. This is a place to drink, but nothing fancy. This is a beer in pitcher or whiskey neat type of bar. The service and the clientele can be gruff, but are mostly harmless. The men and women sitting around the bar, might have been sitting there longer than you've been alive and they are part of what makes the Blue Moon so fascinating. There is prime people watching to be had, amid some PSA's about the realities of drinking heavily for decades. There is live music many nights of the week and the Blue Moon booker (JJ) has his ear to the ground and a great one. Many local bands have gotten their start playing shows at the Blue Moon. Its the type of place on the right night you will later reminisce about, "remember when we saw so-and-so at The Blue Moon?" Playing on its stage is a right of passage in Seattle and should be worn as a badge of honor. Are the band's always great? No. But there are gems to be found, for sure. Snag one of the old wooden booths, watch the world go by, admire the history and the ceiling ... every time I walk in the Moon I spy something I've never seen before. Be kind to the staff and understanding of the regulars. Be drunk before you use the bathroom. Appreciate that this place still exists, it is a relic of another city and another time, it is a character in a Vonnegut novel, its everything a dive bar should be and then some. Probably the pinnacle of the Seattle dive bar summit. It's almost eighty years old now, for a start. It's been a couple years since I have been in, but through the years I've put in dozens of visits. Before you set foot in the place, odds are its reputation will precede it, and you'll go in knowing that it welcomed great writers and often served those unwelcome elsewhere--blacks during Jim Crow, communists and radicals during McCarthyism. There are only so many ways a bar can stand up to assert itself as a champion of social justice, and as attitudes have ebbed and flowed in America, the Blue Moon has stood up in every one of those ways. But the place doesn't take itself too seriously. It doesn't hang plaques to itself announcing that all are well and truly welcome here. It does, however, still have the Rosellini for Governor sign up, which must be going on, what half a century now? There's also a bumper sticker somewhere that says "Might as well kill us all, Slade." Gorton's been out of office for quite a while and I still want one of those bumper stickers. Another thing you do get is a beat-up old oasis of weirdness in a city that's fast becoming antiseptic and generic. It's a warren of cobbled-together booths, staircases, and hallways around a central bar area. The booths are crowded at the top with dog-eared old books, mostly modern lit, mostly good. Under the books, there are sedimentary layers of graffiti carved into the wooden booth walls. And tables. You settle into one and you realize you're not exactly the first person who ever sat there to tip a few. They've been booking live music more and more often since I graduated from the U, and I think that's a permanent part of the plan at the Moon now. On Sunday nights, they used to (and might still) host Dead Night. They'd play a Dead boot, and usually some other 70s rock, especially Zappa. Mondays were (maybe still are) Opera Night--they'd play a whole opera. It's fun watching the grizzled old bikers throw peanut shells on the floor while they listen to Cosi Fan Tutte. There was a backgammon board behind the bar for a long time, and my dad and I came in here to play and listen to the operas. I wondered what he would think of the place, and when we walked in I offered to ask the bartender which opera they were playing. He said "this is Fidelio, the scene where the prisoners are being led out." He might have been the only sincere opera fan in the place that night. After a pitcher of beer and a couple games of BG, I asked him what he thought, and he said "it hasn't changed much since I was going to the U." Well, there it is. One night I was in here with a booth full of friends for Dead Night. We saw something I've never seen anywhere else, and will never forget. A very dark-skinned, profoundly inebriated man with a heavy accent was going around talking to everybody, and soon made his way to our table. We poured him some from our pitcher. Turned out his accent was Rwandan, and he had just fled the fighting there--fighting that had put a gun in his hand. He was trying to tell us that he had seen "this many people dead before," which sounded creepy enough until we realized he was talking about the piles of bodies he'd seen in Rwanda. Somebody asked him what killed them and he said "AK." We must have looked dumbfounded, because he pulled down his pants and showed us a nasty scar on his thigh--the entry wound from an AK-47. He turned around and showed us the back of his leg, and...there wasn't a back of his leg there anymore. He was so frustrated by the language barrier he was almost crying, standing there with his pants down, pointing at this one-square-foot gnarly gash out of his leg, gritting his teeth and saying "AK! AK!" "OK, man...AK-47. We hear you. It's not right what happened to those people. Or to you." From then on he was our buddy. He wandered off to dance after a while. That seemed a happy conclusion to that chapter of his night. We then noticed the dude on the bench across from us. Hadn't really noticed him earlier, since he had been asleep in a very dark corner, dressed head to toe in motorcycle leathers. He had a long salt and pepper beard and long salt and pepper hair, and when he stretched we could see his t-shirt, showing rottweilers under the legend "Only the strong survive." He chatted with us for a few minutes, saying he was "glad to be out of the place where society sent me, when they decided I am a bad person." As he woke up and leaned forward, on his hands, the swastika tattoos were clearly visible. Safe to say that in some Seattle bars, welcoming all comers means more than just red wine drinkers AND white wine drinkers, both. Radical writers, communists, nazis, revolutionaries, freedom fighters, hippies, bikers, they've all bent an elbow here. This is a piece of Seattle that has successfully avoided being sterilized for almost eight decades. Here's to the next eight. read more

The Blue Moon should either be visited at the start of an evening, or it should be the bar of choice to close down the night. If you start with the moon, you have nowhere to go but up. If you end with the moon, you can rest assured knowing you have hit rock bottom and tomorrow will be a better day. All the reviews (yes, even the negative ones) are true, and yet somehow none of them can really do justice to a place so superlatively over the top as the moon. It is so loud, so divey, so dark, so old, so crowded, so full of peanuts, so weird and absurd and lovely and sticky and drug-addled and smelly and weird. If the negative reviews make you nervous, or if you are a germophobe, or scared of homeless people who could nevertheless school you in pool while quoting Shakespeare then stay home. Or go back to California. Otherwise come on in and live it up. read more

Maaaan....the few nights i get to hang out with my two best girlfriends are rare. So i like to get them right. We came here (girlfriend B.'s mom has been a patron for eons) to hear some live music some dude was planning on spinning @ 9 p.m. We waited. And waited. It was 10:30, and the guy was still dicking around with his turntables while his modsquad (girl?)friend sorted through records. PICK ONE ALREADY. Oh my god. My buzz is gone. A creepy young guy won't go away and keeps asking us "What's a cool scene to hang out in Seattle?" Um....you might want to try somewhere else, buddy. I LOVED the scooped-out seating areas here. The cute curly red-haired bartender was one of the coolest women to have served me a drink, and had extreme patience with some of the drunken grimy regulars. I want to go back when there is live music or open mic. I have every confidence that this dingy little bordello is the place for me! I just hate when things don't start on schedule...or when guys i thought were hot from far away approach us with crusty one-liners with a face less flattering up-close. Oh well. read more

The bartender did not acknowledge my presence for about 10 minutes. Then when two white patrons walked to the counter, the bartender stopped helping me and assisted them. Then when I thought he would come back to finish my order, he continued to talked to one of the other patrons. After sitting there for about another 15 minutes, I left and went to another bar that accepts black patrons. I had heard good things about this bar, and was looking forward to receiving excellent service. Ended up not receiving service at all. what bar combines DOWNTOWN COOL with UPTOWN BREW its blue moon ya dumbass! It's a dive bar people. I feel like Seattle should understand this since we have so many! Don't be so critical of a place that is meant to be a dive. If you don't like the atmosphere try Red Robin. I mean seriously...... This place is awesome. it's nostalgic. It's old. it's amazing. The benches and seating is awesome. Made from wood. many things carved into them to read. I love coming here and sitting at different booths and reading the writings people have placed upon the surfaces. I also quite enjoy the conversations on the bathroom stalls people have. They have live entertainment multiple nights a week. Of course, weekends are the busiest. Wednesday they have open Mic, which starts around 9 or 10ish. The open mics are fun, not too serious and well sometimes it's just great to see people having a good time and not caring. I have never been hassled at this bar by anyone weird, in fact, all the times I have been in here I have never had a negative encounter with anyone. Most people keep to themselves or are with friends. The person complaining about the bartender "not doing their job" obviously doesn't realize what duties they actually need to do. It's not the bartenders job to "help you" get someone to stop talking to you. Tell them to go away. Move seats. Even on busy nights the place has plenty of other seating. If it's really a problem, take it upon yourself to solve the problem. If you're old enough to be in the bar you're old enough to deal with the problem and if you're not....maybe you shouldn't be in a dive bar in the first place. Blue Moon is by far one of the nicest dives because there are not a lot of drunk jerks trying to talk to people. In fact, my own bar not far from my home that is also a dive is far worse....with at least 5-6 people that act in that manner a night. If you're at a dive bar you really should expect some encounters like that and you should have the ability to handle them yourself or else you may need to increase your booze budget and go to a fancier establishment. They have pretty clean bathrooms, which is always something I notice, for a dive bar. Not too gross, they keep them cleaned up. They always have TP. What more can you ask for in a city bathroom??? or a dive bar bathroom for that matter. The Blue Moon is one of my favorite seattle dives and if you love dive bars you'll likely enjoy the blue moon. read more

This is well known, but Blue Moon is a historical masterpiece. Dirty, divy, and old, it is frequented by everyone ranging from university professors to townies with high school educations and everyone is friends inside. A friend and I wandered in here one evening and I have to say, I was impressed. I could never imagine a band playing surfer music with a bunch of bikers dancing to it. Hell, one biker loved the music so much, he was showing off his rotund stomach. Gotta love places where you can throw peanut shells on the floor. I think my balls got a little bigger when I went inside. And I am not talking about courage, I am talking about my underware becoming a little more snug. Weird huh? Rock! read more

The high-strung, on-edge, hippie-lookalike sound man "JJ" at the Blue Moon was rough around the edges but a nice fellow besides. Sound quality was passable, stage size generous for a dive bar, and drinks were half-price for band members. The regular crowd were seemingly oblivious to the performances onstage, but applauded nonetheless. Overall, a pleasant experience. read more

Yelp recently flagged and removed my original review because I joking said that I couldn't remember if I've ever actually been in here. The sad truth is, I once somehow heard this place mentioned as "cool and historic" and figured it would have a good college crowd, so I tried to bring a date here a couple years back. We stepped in, I spotted the trio of Jerry Garcia wannabes giving her about the creepiest look you'll ever see, she just look plain old uncomfortable, so I grabbed her and suggested we head down to Big Time. This entire process took about 5 seconds, but I did fact "visit" the Blue Moon and therefore have the right to review it. Look, I majored in History, crew up in California, and consider myself a very open minded person. But even walking by the Blue Moon just makes me cringe. It's flat-out dirty, and filled with people who all you can think of is "Please God, keep these people away from small children". The continual smell of dried pee isn't exactly a plus in my book either. I'll sum up the Blue Moon with this... You know the old bum in "Team America, World Police" who tells Gary the story about dicks fucking pussies and assholes? Well, if you want to meet characters like that, just head to the alley next to the Blue Moon. Even at 11:30 AM, there's at least 3 dudes like that standing behind the dumpster doing who knows what with who knows whose money. I'm sure there's some amazing insights to the workings of the world inside these walls, but I'll just pick up a book, thanks. read more
