Daughter and I stopped into this 'Kin's Farm Market' during our shopping within Como Lakr Village…read morethis morning. This particular market has never really been listed very high on my shopping 'to do' list, but with some time between other shopping venues today, a walk-by and look-see at what was being offered, captured our attention to stop in for a closer look. Broccoli was being featured at a great price. And having some dinner plans in mind for the rest of this week, it was 'yea', when I found some very decent looking and priced green onions and Roma tomatoes. Thanks to this stop at 'Kin's', I was able to catch and fulfill remaining items on my shopping list for today's shopping adventure.

Looking for Organic produce? Of all the Kin's in the Tri-Cities this is the one with consistently…read morethe largest selection of organic produce. They almost always have the following organic items, celery, cabbage, beets with and without the greens (greens are a great leafy veg like chard), garlic and ginger. They always have organic kale, carrots, bananas and several other items. I've even found organic watermelon over this past summer. Once I found organic apples but haven't seen any this year. The staff is helpful and if you ask repeatedly for an item they'll often get it in. Prices are very competitive. If you are on a tight budget look in the bargain shelf at the back. I got a bag of tomatoes that were very ripe at a real discount. They are close to deserving 5 stars. Perhaps organic citrus and/or tomatoes would do it for me.

Re: a purchase and recent preparation of squid…read more What was purchased, and how it was prepared. - two, rather large, whole squid -- purchased as a frozen product, and kept frozen. - when thawed - tentacle area (head) of each squid was cut away from the body, and body contents cleared, and thoroughly cleaned - first meal -- tentacles and pre-cooked vermicelli rice noodles, stir fried together in wok - second meal -- body tubes cut into 'rings', marinated (in canola oil, garlic, ginger, and wine), and the contents stir fried, in wok on high heat -- served w/vermicelli rice noodles prepared stove top. Results: - first meal - found the squid flavourful, but definitely a little tough. Was surprised though, the leftovers after an overnight in the fridge, and eaten cold, were sure good -- much more tender, and with the flavour I had hoped to taste and enjoy yesterday. - second meal - a similar experience - the squid looked good, though still tough after cooking - but after an overnight in the fridge, was so much more tender, flavourful, and tasty. My experiences dealing with preparing and cooking these whole, frozen squid were a lot of fun. The initial results, though a touch off the marks I had hoped for, had ended up with results so much closer, and enjoyed. The squid were really flavourful and tasty, once they had "their way" from how I had initially treated them!!

We had the opportunity to drop into this Mediterranean and Persian grocery for a first-time look…read morerecently, while browsing/shopping a few stores in Burquitlam Plaza, before heading to lunch in the area. Some of my first look observations: - overall freshness of some of the produce (fruits & veggies) lacked appeal -- some decent finds, but root veggies, and such, had definitely long passed any 'date' for me to consider purchasing. - good, large, and highly-varied selections of canned, bottled, and otherwise packaged Mediterranean products. - nice looking selection of Mediterranean breads. - good looking, quality selections of Halal, fresh, and prepared meats and poultry - chicken, lamb, sausages (some beef, and beef w/cheese, sure looked good), and such - and some smoked fish (whole, smoked whitefish sure caught my eye). - I thought prices for brand name products I know and use, were rather high -- but I am unable to relate to the prices of most of the other stuff, as they are mostly specialty products I do not know. I am glad to have had the chance at that time to pop into this store for look -- I'm a big fan of these "small, local, neighbourhood" stores. Hope to have the opportunity for another look soon, and with what I saw this time, have some solid ideas of what I will be looking for that visit!

But they have a lot of unusual and interesting Persian foods that I'd just never seen before, even at other Persian markets. And the fellow at the counter was warm and friendly, and even the security guy hanging out nearby was kind enough to zip up my bag of okra for me. I'd go back.
